The Oklahoma City Thunder are disappointed but not discouraged as they try to dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole in their Western Conference Finals series against San Antonio.

It’s a daunting task that few teams and players have successfully completed, much more daunting than Thunder head coach Scott Brooks even realized when he talked with reporters today, “what is the stat? Like 70 percent or 80 percent (of teams down 0-2 go one to lose the series), higher than that?”

Um yes, it is. 94 percent of teams that win the first two games go on to win the series.

“Okay so we have a 6 percent chance, is that right? I don’t think it’s 94 percent is it?” Well if you wanna get really technical it’s actually 94.3 percent, “okay so we still have a chance,” the coach went on, ever the optimist, “it’s the first team to four but all we’re focusing on is one game.”

You can’t think about winning four in a row or four out of five as the Thunder must do if they’re going to play in The Finals.

It’s just this next game.

One game.

That’s all you’re focusing in on.

“You only focus on the game at hand and tomorrow night’s game is the most important game,” Brooks preached, “that’s what we’ve done all year is taking the one game at a time approach.”

SCOTT BROOKS

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Since only 5.7 percent of teams down 0-2 in the playoffs go on to win the series there are only a few players and coaches in the league who have experienced that thrill and one of them plays for the Thunder.

Derek Fisher was a member of the 2005 Lakers squad that trailed, of all teams San Antonio, 2-0 in the playoffs and came back to win it.

Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman asked him what do you do, besides take it one game at a time, to dig yourself out of that hole?

“Well you kinda took away my answer there,” Fisher said smiling, “because that’s what I was gonna say, that’s truly what we did we did not assume that we would win four games in row which is basically what we ended up doing. We really did just focus in on winning Game 3 and then Game 3 turned into an ability to understand what it would take to win the next game and you just keep playing from there.”

The Thunder did not hold a full practice today. The team met, watched film and went over some things they can tweak a little and some things they can do better.

JAMES HARDEN

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Guard James Harden said he didn’t look at the game tape and think, ‘wow we did everything as good as we can and they still beat us.’

“No not even close. We had spurts where we played very good basketball and then we had spurts where the ball just stopped on offense,” Harden said, “and then on defense we gave them these layups and easy 3-pointers and that’s how they go on their runs. We just have to play better.”

The Spurs don’t just challenge you physically a big part of their game is the mental aspect, forcing other teams to think their way out of whatever problem they’re facing.

“They don’t stop so we can’t either. We can’t allow a lack of focus to let things slip away,” Harden finished.

Brooks wouldn’t get into specifics but he did admit, “we’re gonna make a few adjustments, but whatever we do we’re gonna have to do it with incredible effort.”

Derek Fisher, who lived to tell about surviving an 0-2 start to a playoff series, said it often comes down to one simple thing.

“You can talk about X’s and O’s and adjustments and rotations and all those things but at the end of the day, you just have to want it and how you define that, how you lay that out as a game plan I don’t know, but when you want it bad enough you figure it out and we have to want it bad enough come tomorrow night to figure it out.”

Look guys, i know we hate coach Nick, but these are some good points he's making. Thunder wasn't practicing today and watched tapes instead. Let's hope it helps us.

@ILikePancakes I am very frustrated by all of this Russell Westbrook hate.  Aren't there 29 teams in the league that can't beat the Spurs?  Russ is by no means a perfect player but he's way above average.  He's not the reason why we lost.

@FF_pickups  @ILikePancakes I agree I thought everyone was past the Russell Westbrook hate thing. He has proven time and time again that he is a great player, and getting better day by day. I defended him when was struggling, and I will surely defend him now. He is one of the main reasons we are where we are. Without him there is no doubt in my mind the Thunder get sent home packing in round 1.

@FF_pickups  coach nick is biased, he worked out with reggie jackson, it is to his benefit to attack westbrook

@FF_pickups i dunno, teams do not overpay backup pg's and there are not many teams looking for new starting pgs that have the cap space.

Maynor won't be with our team much longer.  If he has a good year next year, we won't be able to afford him, if he has a bad year, we won't want him.

@FF_pickups yeah i like reggie jackson, he just needs some summer league and a full training camp, not that we need him next year with maynor back

I noticed in his other youtube video that was attacking Westbrook, he called Reggie Jackson, "Talented rookie Reggie Jackson".  LOL, he'll be good but come on, he can't play meaningful basketball minutes in the NBA right now.

It's not Russell Westbrook that makes Russell Westbrook look bad. It's Scotty Del Nebrooks' system.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@ElMexiThunder  @John64 Agree with Mexi here. The reason Russell ends up with the ball more often then not is because he is the PG and he can always get separation with his speed.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

@John64 He does take ill-advised shots, but so does Durant, Harden, Lebron, Wade, Parker, Kobe, soo on and soo on. When your offensive sets are soo poor that the plays get busted 7 out of 10 times, when your technique as a whole is so poor that you get lost trying to run your 2nd, or 3rd option(if we even have one with this playground type stuff), when all that happens, you're forced to wing it. Russ always ends up with the ball because of busted plays, clocks winding down, he has to force up a shot.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@John64  @ILikePancakes There is a difference between a player developing his game and the offensive scheme his team is running. I think everyone will tell you Russell has some things to work on. But if you don't have solid ground to stand on in the first place it makes it even tougher to establish your role in an offense.

John64
John64 5pts

@ILikePancakes So brooks makes Russ take I'll advised 3's 10 seconds into the shot clock and complain to the refs instead of getting back on defense? I love Russ and agree that it seems that poor offensive sets sometimes contribute to his erratic play, but Russ shares some of the blame for the criticism he gets.

OKC is in trouble....for some reason they did not see this buzzsaw of a team coming.  Spurs will win one of the two in OKC and finish OKC's season in game 5 at SA.  That should give Westbrook time to get some lens' for his Sally Jesse Raphel red frames!  (Westbrook=D-Bag)

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@CMDinSA I'm glad your taking this opportunity to get your shots in now. Just don't go crying to momma in the future when OKC fans are trolling your boards telling you how old and pathetic your team is. What comes around goes around. And I hate to tell you this but with the age of some of your key players the longer this series goes the better the Thunders chances get at winning. You better hope the Spurs take one in OKC because if they don't and this goes to 7....it might get ugly for your Spurs fans.

CMDinSA
CMDinSA 5pts

 @Thunderbuzzy

We have been "taking this opportunity to get our shots" for 13 years...SA has 4 rings and on the way to #5, so until OKC wins its first ring you should probably keep your pie-hole shut.

@Thunderbuzzy  @CMDinSA  @f5alcon Before you get all high and mighty there, Thunderbuzzy, I suggest you look up the meaning of the word "redundant."  A Spurs fan commenting on an OKC blog is sad, pathetic, possibly even ironic, but is in no way, shape, or form - redundant.  I suggest your time may be better spent reading a book, or thumbing through a dictionary, yes?

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@CMDinSA  @f5alcon Coming onto the OKC blog and telling an OKC fan to keep his pie hole shut is a little redundant don't you think? I would think an educated texan like yourself would know better. But alas you must not be educated. It must suck to be sucking on the teet of society and a bottom feeder. Go away catfish...your useless drivel isn't welcome here.

@FF_pickups I think it's an awesome strategy. Popovich does the same thing. I think it benefits the Thunder greatly and needs to be done more. It's not a matter of what is fun to watch, it's about winning at this point and survival.

Gain confidence by taking care of business at home. Make the spurs play 7 games and then find out how invincible they really are. This series isn't over. KD and crew proved Tuesday night that they were not going down without a fight.

Vegas must really think the Thunder will win tonight with the 3.5 point spread (favoring the Thunder).  The way the Spurs scored at will the last game along with their current run you would think there would be a ton of money going the Spurs way tonight.

@f5alcon  @okcjim I think the reason for that spread is because of Chesapeake Arena. The place is just nasty to play in. I hope the fans bring it tonight. Make the Spurs know the peake is the real deal.

"Perkins, to me, should be absolutely taken off the floor for this series.  He doesn't have a role in this series because he's not giving you anything offensively and he is absolutely a fish out of water defensively trying to defend the pick and roll."

@FF_pickups The more I consider your thought the more I like it. All of our big men lack ball skills. So many times the balls falls to them and they bobble it and play hot potato with it. Losing possessions is too easy for this Spurs team.

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

 @Thunderbuzzy

Thanks!  I'm not hating on our big guys, it's just not the right matchup.  Against the Lakers, we need Perkins.  This is a speed team and Perk just doesn't belong.  But Brooks can never seem to grasp that concept so it doesn't matter.

KD has made one out of four shots in the 4th quarters of games 1 and 2. He is the greatest scorer in the game, for fucks sake. Don't try to be like Baldy, do what you do best. Score points.
