Wednesday Bolts – 5.30.12

by Royce Young on May 30, 2012 at 8:57 am 191 Comments

Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN.com: “Scott Brooks finally caught on as his team clawed back at the end of the third quarter, when be brought back Serge Ibaka. If the Thunder seemed like a quicker more active defensive team after that, it might be because they had their quicker, more active big man on the floor. At that point, the Thunder figured out some coverages that optimized their speed and athleticism. They switched pick-and-rolls when necessary, or let Ibaka corral when he had a good angle on Parker or Ginobili. When the Spurs hit shots for much of the fourth, those attempts were more likely to be outside looks generated out of desperation rather than the result of kickouts and penetration. So the Ibaka matter was resolved, but why Derek Fisher played the final 17 minutes of the game was mystifying, while Thabo Sefolosha played fewer than two of the final 18 minutes. Sometimes it’s too easy to critique a coach after the fact, but there was something dubious about Brooks’ decision to stay with Derek Fisher. At critical moments, don’t you have to ask yourself as a coach, “What are my goals?” and “Who among my personnel can help me achieve them?”

ESPN Stats and Info: “The Thunder used a small lineup consisting of just one big man — Kendrick Perkins, Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison or Nazr Mohammed — for just one minute in the first half before using such lineups predominantly (17 of 24 minutes) in the second half. The Thunder’s small lineups outscored the Spurs by 15, while the traditional two big man lineups were outscored by 24.”

Beckley Mason of TrueHoop with a docket on Scott Brooks: “Emotional leader. Brooks still has a ways to go as an X’s and O’s coach, but from his first day on the job, Brooks has had the right personality to coach this young Thunder team. He’s an unceasingly positive motivator who tends to soften his criticism of players with compliments about all the things they’re doing correctly. His players trust him and his history in the league. However, Brooks has yet to show much in the way of creativity and his teams rarely make dramatic in-game adjustments. He keeps things basic and trusts the talent on the floor to do the rest.”

John Rohde: “With his team trailing 82-66 and tired of what he considered to be one-sided officiating, Brooks barked in the face every referee he could find. Brooks got away with two heated confrontations without getting slapped with a technical foul. The third time was the charm as a ticked-off Brooks finally got teed up. The normally docile Brooks no doubt was hoping a technical might fire up his team.”

My CBSSports.com column saying no moral victories, just missed opportunities.

Andrew McNeill of 48 Minutes of Hell: “I’m curious if it might be a good thing that the Spurs didn’t go on to blow out the Thunder in this game. Close game reps are an important thing and the Spurs didn’t seem all that pleased after this game ended, despite the win. They might need some anger or edge to start Game 3 considering OKC is likely to play with a dangerous combination of excitement and desperation back home.”

Darnell Mayberry: “If you’re like me, you walked away from Game 2 asking yourself how on earth do you stop the Spurs? Offensively, they’re a machine. They have a potent mix of pinpoint passing, low-post scoring, perimeter shooting and marvelous playmakers. Stay at home on shooters and they murder you in the paint. Sag off and supply too much help and they scorch you from outside. Shut down option one, two and three, and they just keep passing and passing until they get a quality shot. Show signs of sluggishness getting back and they burn you in transition. They make basic basketball look not just beautiful, but also unstoppable.”

J.A. Adande of ESPN.com: “In many ways Game 2 was an optimal game for the Thunder. Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks had plenty of good things to say about his team afterward. Their Big Three of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden went off. They only turned the ball over 10 times. They made 47 percent of their 3-point shots. They grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. They extracted 36 free throws from a Spurs team that makes point of not fouling. And the Thunder never had a shot — as in one shot that could have tied the game or given them the lead during the final 35 ½ minutes of the game. The best they could do was cut a Spurs lead that was 22 points in the third quarter down to six points in the fourth.”

Marc Stein of ESPN.com: “If the Thunder’s short-term outlook is indeed as bleak as it suddenly looks, needing four wins in five tries against a team that hasn’t lost a single basketball game for almost 50 days, their rising exasperation in trying to keep up with these Spurs will eventually fade. If the Thunder can’t win the next two games at home to make this a series — after Durant and Westbrook combined with James Harden for 88 points that weren’t nearly enough in this 120-111 Game 2 defeat — they’ll realize with time that there’s no shame in getting shredded by the old masters.”

One of my beloved bosses at CBSSports.com passed away unexpectedly yesterday. Thinking of you, Craig. Here’s a wonderful tribute.

There you have it. Glad most of the press realizes Brooks is more of a cheerleader than a coach. Maybe next year we'll get someone with a system.

I was thinking last night that if you put Daequon Cook on the Spurs he would probably average 15 points a game lol

 @Marty_McFly321 he would probably also be able to do more than shoot the 3.

 @TempBoy Brandon Spurs fan here... Cheer up, TempBoy! You've got a great team with a great future. Yes, you're in a hole, but I've seen teams come back from 2-0 to win a series--even in the Finals (Blazers - 76ers in 1977, for instance). More to the point, remember that you could be a Charlotte fan.

 Would it cheer you up to be reminded that KD, Westbrook, Ibaka, and Harden are all 23 years old or younger?

 @anonymous12345 What's funny is, that's the thing that I keep going back to when I get spontaneously sad today. So yes, that does help, thank you. :)

We keep tossing all these names out there, SVG, JVG, etc etc, but I want Mike Budenholzer. Pop has credited him time and time again for the beauty that is the Spurs offense. With our close ties with the Spurs, I say we make him an offer he can't refuse this summer, go get some rings, and be the starting point for his legacy as one of the all-time greats.

 I asked earlier today if there was an assistant coach on the spurs that would be willing to take a head coaching job.  I'm still on the fence about Brooks, but if he does go, I want someone thats involved with running the machine that is the Spurs offense.

f5alcon

 @JimboSlice thats true, but not more than the big name coaches, and i doubt brooks is gone anyway, even if I want it.

 @ThunderFromDownUnder You don't go for that strategy if you're down almost 20 when you start.  You need to get stops.

I think your math is off a little bit.  He would have 60 points because he gets 2 free throws every time.  Also, we would foul out so quick...

 @ThunderFromDownUnder which is 60 points in 60 fouls, 60 fouls is 120 FTs. FF pickups math is right.

lemonparade4

 @ThunderFromDownUnder  @FF_pickups Right - 60 fouls * 2 FTs per foul * 50% = 60 points.  Jack.

Scott Brooks is a good coach. Like Thunderstruck2412 said yesterday he's a young coach. Thats what we don't need. We don't need a coach who's still learning the game. We need somebody thats been there done that. Yes, we need someone who micromanages. Brooks gets the respect of his players, but he's also not good at his X's, and O's, so of course if his plays get broken, and KD, Russ, and Harden have to wing it, thats fine by him. WE DON'T NEED THAT. Incase many of you haven't noticed. It takes a coach far far FAR longer to develope then it does a group of young talented guys. Yes, we are young, but already we're worried about desperate teams out there throwing near max contracts in Hardens, and Ibakas faces because they're so young and talented. What makes you guys think we really will have those two 3 years down the line? Maybe the only way to convince them to stay is by winning a ring with them, and obviously Scott isn't the guy for that job of leading the way. Like BMUELLE21 said the other day,

"I'f im Ibaka, i want out of OKC. It must be hard knowing our the BEST shot blocker in the league but your coach doesn't trust you in late 4th quarter games, so your sitting on the bench watching the Spurs lay-up line light it up."

So what Scotty played him in the 4th yesturday, thing is Scotty has done wierd lineups like that all season going back to last. Alot of them have cost us key gams. I'f im Ibaka, and i know my coach is a idiot who doesn't trust me, i'm the best shot blocker in the league, i'm young, and teams out there might pay me 4-6 million more compared to what i'll win here. IM LEAVING.

 @ElMexiThunder Scott Brooks _is_ a good coach. But a good coach is rarely good enough to win an NBA Championship. Look at who coached the last twenty NBA champions:

Phil Jackson (10 of them!)

Gregg Popovich (4)

Rudy Tomjanovich (2)

Doc Rivers (1)

Larry Brown (1)

Pat Riley (1)

Rick Carlisle (1)

Brooks might be as good a coach as Tomjanovich.  The other six coaches on that list are clearly better than him. In the case of Jackson, Popovich, Brown, and Riley, I'd say they're much better than him.

f5alcon

 @ElMexiThunder well it isnt up to ibaka if he leaves or not, he is a RFA is he doesnt sign an extension and we can match.

SB718

 @f5alcon  @ElMexiThunder It's up to him whether he signs a deal he knows Presti can't afford to match.

 @f5alcon His agent works for him not the other way around.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

 @SB718  he is going to sign the best offer available, regardless of if he wants to leave, his agent will make sure of that.

HR_TX
HR_TX 5pts

The 2 biggest keys for this series was can OKC guard SA and can they get contributions from anyone outside the Big3. So far the answer to both those questions is no.

Priority #1 this offseason should be improving the talent around the 4 man core.

Ibaka needs to take advantage of his time with the Spanish National team. Spend every minute possible working with the Gasols on his offensive game.

I wonder if KG would consider OKC this offseason. He's never been a guy to care about market. He wants to win. He'd step into a situation where he could make a big impact and be on a contending team. A lot of teams may throw money at him but most won't be contenders.

SB718
SB718 5pts

 @ThunderUp12 He's not playing for a mid level deal.

HR_TX
HR_TX 5pts

 @SB718

Is Boston definitely going to resign him?

How many other contending teams can offer him more than the MLE?

If Boston is moving on then he's probably not gonna be able to get much more than the MLE from most contenders.

Well every trade i've worked out where we get Gortat, our winning % goes up a good bit. 8-10 more wins, sometimes i even get 12. Thing is everyone else's goes down. We did kinda sign Perkins to expensive contract for a dude who really doesn't earn his money. Crazy to know we're paying him 7 millions to just play against the Lakers, and Howard, when we could be paying Gortat 6 million, and have low post scoring, and another good shot blocker. All Orlando wanted in that trade was a place to unload VC, and a SF/PF combo, we Had Green, we had the Cap Space, We had Cook to unload. Two First Round Picks. Just Danm...

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @ElMexiThunder gortat is overachieving because of nash, his rebounding might be the same, but his scoring probably would not be.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @f5alcon

Rebounding still means extra possessions, that Pekins unfortunately hasn't really been able to provide. He'll still be better offensively then Perkins by a good margin. It was just sad seeing Kwahi Leonard two games in a round get a offensive board in between Ibaka, Perkins, and KD. It was sad to see Artest, and Barnes do that for the Lakers, it was sad to see Mahimi, and Marion get those two.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

 @ThunderBelize  @ElMexiThunder yeah our system kills rebounders, nazr's trb% went down 2% from charlotte to here last year and another 1% this year. kristic's went up to 2% when he played for boston. perkins dropped 2% last year and 7% this year. nick collison dropped 4% the year brooks took over and has lost another 7% since.

ThunderBelize
ThunderBelize 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @ElMexiThunder  @f5alcon Our rebounding troubles stem from two things and two thing only - 1) desire. The other guys just desire it more than we do and 2) systematic positioning. Our system fails to put our guys in good rebounding position - or maybe a credit to other teams' system for putting us in bad position.

 @ElMexiThunder what was the trade for gortat? i'm just curious

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @bmuelle21

Perkins, Aldrich and Reggie for Gortat and Morris. Obviously the Suns would never do that.

bmuelle22
bmuelle22 5pts

It been said here before but the big reason we got Perk was to stop the Lakers...think about it...last year everyone thought that we would be playing the Lakers in the western conference finals instead of dallas...if we would of faced the Lakers I am pretty confident we would of won and it would of been a coin flip for the championship

It would of been a good short term move but i just don't see it as a long-term when perk is not a good matchup for over half the teams out there

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

 @bmuelle21

I think Sam Presti is accumulating assets so we can deal with virtually any team in the league.  Perkins is an asset in that he helps us deal with post scorers.

ThunderBelize
ThunderBelize 5pts

 @FF_pickups  @bmuelle21 And post scorering bigs are plenty outside of Bynum, Howard and the Gasol's. just not as strong as those 3/4 players are.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @FF_pickups  @bmuelle21

The only Centers who are real post scorers anymore are Howard, Bynum, Marc Gasol, Gortat, and Hibbert. Gortat and Hibberts because of their athleticism would take Perkins off the dribble at times. Same with Nene. Gasol's hook shot because of his height has so killed Perkins. So that leavees him rally Howard and Bynum...

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

@John64 compare Hibbert to Perkins. He's not Ibaka athletic or Chandler. But he's rimmed a shot and got his own rebound back all with Perkins guarding him.

John64
John64 5pts

@ElMexiThunder @FF_pickups @bmuelle21 Hibbert is definitely not athletic.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @bmuelle21

Most importantly he's athletic. He'll be able to run with the team up and down, and actually grab rebounds.

lemonparade4

 @ElMexiThunder  @bmuelle21 I think the Suns make it impossible for other GMs to accurately gauge talent - well, really, it's Nash's fault for making everyone so good.  Who would have thought Stoudemire would suck so much without Nash?

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @bmuelle21

I'm real high off Gortat right now.Dude has a OK low post game, he's good on the PnR, sometimes if need be can PnP, He might not be as strong as Perkins is when it comes to getting back down on the post, but he has shot blocking, and athleticism to make up for that. Plus he's cheaper then Perkins.
