It’s a shame No. 1 isn’t going to be what we hoped. Final seconds ticking off the clock as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook hugged at midcourt and confetti fell in The Peake. That would’ve been a good No. 1.
Still, the 2012 playoff provided some serious moments, some stuff we’ll remember for a long time. There were plays that you know you’ll sit around and talk about with someone 20 years from now. You’ll remember that time KD exploded in the fourth, or that big shot James Harden hit.
You live for the moments, those seconds of unfiltered jubilation you get watching your team. I know you’ve probably got your own, but here are my top 20 plays from this postseason run.
20. Serge Ibaka chases down the Jet
Of all the Thunder’s playoff games, Game 3 in Dallas might’ve been the most satisfying. Games 1 and 2 were painfully, brutally close, but in Game 3, the Thunder established some serious dominance. And nothing set the tone quite like Ibaka’s volleyball spike of Jason Terry’s fastbreak attempt.
19. Thabo rips Wade, goes reverse
Not gonna lie, all the plays from The Finals are a little bittersweet. Knowing the Thunder lost the series makes a lot of these plays a little less enjoyable, but Thabo’s rip of Wade and reverse finish was truly spectacular. Not to mention he was fouled and it should’ve been a bigger play than it was. Alas, the Thunder lost the game but Thabo gave a little hope for a second.
18. KD dunkin’ Duncan
Boom. That’s the word I thought of. BOOM.
17. Westbrook sends a warning shot
When Russell Westbrook rose high to cram on the Spurs early in Game 6, I figured that was going to be the play that sparked a big 20-4 run or something. Instead the Thunder suffered through a miserable first half before finally waking up in the second. Still, the dunk was rad.
16. Dr. Nasty becomes Mr. Perfect
Eleven-for-eleven. They could’ve all been dunks, and that would be incredibly impressive. I’m not sure we all appreciated this performance from Ibaka enough.
15. KD hammers in Game 5
Anyone notice what a good finisher KD has become? If he gets a step on someone and targets the rim, he can use his length and hops to dunk basically with two steps from the 3-point line.
14. Thunder Alley
For a couple nights, it was just about the coolest thing Thunder fans had done in a long line of very cool things.
13. Not this time, LeBron
An unstoppable force meets an immovable object at the rim. I’m surprised this didn’t cause some kind of massive explosion, like an atom was split or something.
12. Too small
I don’t know why, but I got such a crazy kick out of Durant hitting this turnaround, then taking his mouthpiece out to tell Dwyane Wade, “Too small.” Subtle trash talk is the best.
11. Harden for four
This shot should’ve been the dagger to finish the Spurs in Game 5, but alas, the Thunder did some lead blowin’.
10. The 16
How do you want it, Spurs? Because KD was showing the whole package in Game 4. The Thunder ran the same play 10 straight times at the Spurs, and they still had no idea how to stop it, even though Durant was basically telling them what was coming.
9. 43
I said it after the game, but Westbrook’s Game 4 effort was one of the most incredible, impressive performances I’ve ever seen. I felt like I was watching a sports movie where you get inspired to be a better person or something when the credits roll. The passion Westbrook was playing with made me want to go lift weights or do a good deed for a stranger. I’ll never forget watching Westbrook compete like that and give every last drop of what he had.
8. Doodle Jumping the Lakers
My favorite play of the 9-0 run to top the Lakers in Game 2 was Durant’s go-go-gadget steal of Kobe’s lazy pass (one that Kobe called a “gamble” as if Durant did something wild and crazy to grab that), but the Doodle Jump shot to take a 2-0 series lead was the second game-winner for KD in six games.
7. The Beard pulls out the dagger
It all was breaking down, all falling apart. The Thunder were crumbling in San Antonio and looking at giving away the most deflating game in their history. The Thunder needed a play, and James Harden provided it. Bonus points for the crazy amount of swag he dropped in flashes those three fingers.
6. Westbrook, flying
I don’t know what my favorite part about this play was. Was it a) how Westbrook seemed to pause in midair while he caught the ball b) the force he threw the ball into the rim with c) the primal scream he unleashed or d) the spastic celebration? I’ll go with e) ALL OF IT.
5. Kid Clutch
The Thunder were in a hole for essentially all of Game 4 and were facing a tied series and rejuvenated Lakers. OKC couldn’t seem to close in on L.A. but a fourth quarter run somehow got the game tied. Durant picked off a bad Pau Gasol pass and once he got the ball isolated on Metta World Peace, every Thunder fan saw it coming. KD was going to drop that 3 and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. Cold-blooded is the correct word for this shot. Just cold-blooded.
4. There goes Harden driving to the rim OH HOLY BEARD
James Harden erupted in Game 4 to help the Thunder sweep the Mavs scoring 29 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. While people were griping about Harden’s performance in The Finals and trying to figure out if he wasn’t as good as originally thought, I continued to point to this game. Harden is a great, great player. He owned Game 4 in Dallas and this dunk was so out of character for him that I remember letting out one of those reactionary “OH S%&#!” that you do when caught completely off guard by an awesome play.
3. The Bounce from God
Just think if that shot doesn’t go down. The Thunder start the playoffs 0-1, lose homecourt to the Mavericks, have their confidence completely shaken and things might’ve been much different. Who knows.
2. On a Westbrook and a prayer
“Good steal, Russ. Oh, maybe a breakaway here… ah darn it, good fou— WHAT AHHHHH IT COUNTS YES!!!!!”
1. Perk brings The Finals to Oklahoma City
So the Thunder didn’t win a championship this season, but I’ll forever have this moment. I’ll never, ever forget sitting there and having a tidal wave of emotion drill me in the face when Perk finished that dunk. I’ve never been somewhere so loud and so electric as that. Not only were the Thunder going to the NBA Finals, but they had come back from a seemingly impossible 0-2 hole and toppled the mighty Spurs. KD embracing his family, Oklahoma City exploding. The Thunder didn’t raise a banner, but this moment was incredibly special regardless.

Brooks on Serge Ibaka's hands: "It's not like he's Fred Biletnikoff or anything, but he doesn't have bad hands."
Sportando reporting that Pleiss will play summer league with OKC. And this Andrey Voronsevitch speaks enough English: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lidTkW50ZyM
These guys, and a freed Cole Aldrich, should help with energy off the bench.
@DXL I recall Vorontsevich playing well against us in that preseason game we had against CSKA in 2010, hit a few threes and had some offensive rebounds too.
@DXL Initial info about summer league came from Pleiss' former coach Chris Fleming.
Nice little insight in the Thunder's interest in Vorontsevich (and his team mate combo guard Shved): former CSKA player and assistant coach David Vanterpool is now Thunder head scout
Brooks is a motivational speaker not a coach
@OkcBaby He's a Klinsmann
@diddoff @OkcBaby But Klinny has done so well with the the U.S. tea...... but he really puts in his team in the bes..... nope, I've got nothing. :(
Next time we whine about officiating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bINk7fl4upk#!
After watching Brooks' speech to the guys in that last huddle I really want him to to be "the guy" who takes us to the promised land. If only I felt I could trust him to make basic decision such as sitting a guy with a partially torn groin against one of the quicker teams in the league. Sigh.
@Old Man Game Anyone got a link to the speech??
@LPCes99 @Old http://t.co/2wA1lcNw
@Old Man Game yeah..thats what kills me. i made a joke a while back that brooks would play perkins even if he was legless and on crutches, well..he did play a man whom was slow as crap, couldnt rotate, had a torn groin, and just overall contributed NOTHING to this series, over a younger, faster cole, a smarter and quicker collison. hell at one point id of rather seen lazar in the game over perk.
@Legendary_dork I know, if you can't trust his judgment with this it leaves you with little confidence in him no matter how nice a guy he is.
@El Prez Now, that i know the point behind your question, Yes, i would take Artest for a year if it meant a defender who can slow down Lebron and hit the occasional three. This also means however that He would be under utilized or we have to get rid of Thabo who's our best defender at guarding quick guards, Artest can't guard Guards anymore like at all.
Well, I have not been paying attention to the Draft, who are the top prospects for the Thunder, what are the Thunder looking for in the draft? Hell, what is a Thunder need for the Offseason? Acquiring or dumping off
Anyone see the Mark Cuban on Skip Bayless on Espn first take
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv2jqFd2-qI
I think Cuban is saying they had a better defensive scheme than the thunder, admitting that the Dallas team that beat lebron last year was not as athletic but smarter.
Come on Brooks, you could have done better. Should have watched some of last years film.
@criznazy53 Skip got owned.
@criznazy53 last year lebrons post game was not nearly what it was this year...this year he lived in the paint
@OBoymuzik that is true. What Mark Cuban is saying though is that he forced him out into the perimeter, not that he wasn't effective at the post.
did anyone end up selling some of their shirts on ebay?
@OBoymuzik How much could you get for them on there?
@Old Man Game @OBoymuzik Not as much as if we had won the title. :)
@OBoyzOld Man @Old @OBoymuzik as Homer Simpson would say, "D'OT!"
Royce, are we gonna be graced with a Top 10-20 plays for Collison anytime this offseason?
This team is amazing. Forget the title. Watching them play the way they did this season is more than I could have asked for. And now after having a game nearly every other day since Christmas, I find myself without a game to look forward to.. Thank God for Royce and this blog, or else I'd go crazy.
@loplopol Not to worry there's plenty of sports out there why just this evening I was watching an action packed Arena Football game on NFL network. OH WHO am I kidding, but hey next NBA season starts in only 17 weeks.
@Old Man Game @loplopol Its not that bad this summer. We got the draft, free agency, olympics, and then summer league to keep us entertained. The offseason will feel like a few days compared to that damn lock out
@Old Man Game 17 weeks doesnt sound so bad.
@Old Man Game Let the countdown begin! The only things I look forward to right now is the Draft and Sooner football. I've been so focused on the Thunder that I can barely remember how football works haha.
Obviously the offense was entirely too perimeter oriented most of the season. I wish we could just get other guys more involved cutting to the basket. At 6'7" with long arms Thabo should be decent in that role. Might be a way to punish teams that focused too much on KD and Russ without having to rely on Thabo's super slow 3 point shot.
@Old Man Game Would you consider bringing Artest on board? We have no one on the roster who can defend LeBron. I was stunned at how he made Thabo, James, and KD all look like little girls in this series. Artest, Marion, and Tony Allen would be my top three choices. We need a man to defend LeBron.
@El Prez
Um Thabo only got 9 minutes in game 5 ecause of Books love affar with Fisher. Thabo done a solid job on Lebon as did Durant except for foul trouble.
Harden go murderd by Lebron yet Brooks continued to leave him on Lebron because he didnt wantto take out Fisher, and put Thabo in.
@MostJadedGamer @El Prez No way, Once Lebron got about 8 feet from the basketball he would score or set others up at will. Thabo did the best he could, but he's not the right man to defend LBJ.
@El Prez @Old Man Game I'm not sure there is anybody in this league that can guard Lebron for a whole game. Just like I'm not sure anybody in the league can guard Kobe or Durant either. With Lebron a lot is how the rules are set up currently. You can't really stop him once he starts dribbling and well he takes the ball up the court half the time so it's hard to deny him the ball.
@El Prez I wouldn't have a problem with Artest on the team. I like Ron. I think he's a psycho but I like him. He's got that type of personality.
If Pop would take Steven Jackson to guard KD and LeBron--why wouldn't Presti take Artest to deal with LeBron? This innocence period needs to be in our rear view mirror. This is the NBA--not Leave It To Beaver. We need some men who will bend the rules if necessary to bring home the O'Brien Trophy. It was nice getting to the Finals--now it's time to add the piece which helps us win the championship. Both Artest and Jackson would also give us much needed three point shooting. I think you can tell--my grieving period over losing the series last night is no longer gripping me.
@Old Man Game @El Prez I'd take Marion of MWP. I really don't think I could ever root for MWP. And I'm pretty sure Presti would agree that he doesn't fit the "Thunder model" of a player. I wouldn't mind Marion though. Even though he's got the weirdest shot in the NBA
@Old Man Game It doesn't have to be other people... KD could improve his ability to cut to the hoop a lot. The heat over denied him a lot... if he got better at back door cuts he could hold teams honest and actually get mid post position a lot easier.
@Prye05 True and that would help. But I'd also like to find a way to get Thabo involved specifically so we can keep him on the floor when the other team has a scorer for him to defend.
@Old Man Game Well any time the other team is required to guard all 5 players on the floor it makes life a lot easier on offense. The reason why Steve Nash is such a great PG is because he can hit guys who aren't even cutting, which causes defenses to stay honest.
@Old Man Game You wanna know whos a great cutter russ is
@Lost Ones @Old Man Game Problem is finding someone to pass him the ball.
@Prye05 @Old Man Game he should just get a solid 3 pt shot like his midrange shot now. Hopefully he won't wait till he's as old as jason kidd before he starts getting that shot
@Old Man Game I'm still not sure if I'm sold on the idea of Russ playing without the ball in his hands. Look at game 4 for example. Obviously he needs to work on some consistency. And sure he doesn't always have to give the ball up... but I just feel like he's better with the ball than without since he doesn't exactly have a great outside shot to keep teams from sagging off him to take away a lot of cuts.
@Prye05 That's how I envision him is more of a point forward type. Then he's hitting Russ, KD or Thabo on cuts.
@Old Man Game Additionally I think some of it will depend on what position and role team's ask him to play. If you have him playing as a standard post up PF he probably won't be nearly as good as say letting him be more of a point forward type player. He also has streaks of playing like various types of players. Some of the time he's compared to a somewhat less athletic but bigger KG which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Others have him compared more towards SF type players.
@Old Man Game @Lost Ones I feel like he has potential to be a decent player in the league. A lot of it though will depend on the team he gets drafted onto. He does have an anxiety disorder (based around a fear of flying) though he's working on fixing that with psychologists and what not. However, travel in the NBA is a lot different than college so who knows. I do feel he'd be better suited for a more structured team or a more established team like the Thunder or Celtics than a team with less of an identity such as the 76ers.
@Prye05 @Lost Ones Sounds like you've watched him more than I. What do you think his chances of success are in the league overall?
@Old Man Game @Lost Ones Being from Iowa I watched a lot of Royce. One of his problems is he gets lost in the games sometimes and doesn't make much of a difference. Obviously sometimes he can play well like what he did in the tournament against UConn and Kentucky. However, against players that will be equally as big and strong as him he won't necessarily be able to punish them as easy. He also plays better with the ball in his hands than off ball... which I suppose off the bench could make him ideal. However, I'm not sure how he'd mix with the starting unit.
@Prye05 @Lost Ones This is why I want Royce White on this team. He would be awesome passing out of the post area.
@Prye05 @Old Man Game If ibaka worked on his mid paint passing he would be able to find cutters.
