The Thunder capped off their week in Orlando with a 89-75 win over the Jazz to take home a 3-2 record. Quick, everybody to the airport!
But all I saw from this game (after watching on my DVR because come on now, 7 AM?!?) was Reggie Jackson’s outstanding poster of Jeremy Evans. That’s what we want to see, Reggie. More of that, all the time.
Final report card from the week for the Thunder’s roster players and a few other notes:
Reggie Jackson: B+
For the most part, he accomplished what I hoped to see. He played with confidence and asserted himself as the most talented player on the Thunder team. He attacked really well out of the pick-and-roll, used his athleticism at the rim (see above) and took care of the ball. Two things I would’ve liked to see more of: 1) A mid-range pull-up game and 2) a little more playmaking. Jackson didn’t have a game where he really piled up assists, but then again, it’s tough when you’re dishing to, well, not Kevin Durant, James Harden and Serge Ibaka.
I think some growth and development was shown by Jackson though. He didn’t get a Summer League last season because of the lockout and didn’t get a training camp because of an injury. This was his first real crack at just focusing on getting better and I think he’s moved ahead some from the player we saw filling in for Eric Maynor.
Perry Jones III: A-
Because of an ankle sprain, we only got two games out of Jones and while the first game was much better than the second, it was obvious: He’s really, really good.
His versatility is incredible obvious and he just has a smooth flow to his game. Some would see this as being passive, but I think in the right setting, Jones is a blender. He’s a guy that’s going to fit in well beside talented players on the floor. At Baylor, where he was seen more as the go-to guy, he might’ve been a bit uncomfortable with that. But with the Thunder where he most definitely doesn’t need to be any kind of offensive focal point, he can just mesh with the talent around him.
What I was most impressed with was his size though. He’s a very solid 6-11 and he’s extremely built. He was billed as being soft, but from what I saw, he’s most definitely not. He’s a stout guy that knows how to use his body. Twice he just moved people out of his way to finish in the paint.
I don’t know what Jones’ future will hold with the Thunder or if he’ll see any real playing time this season, but for being the 28th pick, the Thunder got something pretty special.
Cole Aldrich: C+
I’ll be honest: I expected much more from Aldrich. With the work I had seen him put in and the improvements he was making, I figured he was ready to look like a fairly dominant player in Summer League against mostly D-League talent.
Instead, he played like a backup center. Which keep in mind, is what his role will (likely) be next season. Lines like Friday’s — four points, six rebounds, one block — were mostly the norm for Aldrich this week and while there wasn’t anything impressive about the way he played, I didn’t come away from watching him thinking, “Those 10 minutes he’s going to play behind Perk, the Thunder are screwed.”
Because again, he’s replacing Nazr Mohammed here. Not Dwight Howard. Or even Kendrick Perkins for that matter. His job will be to rebound misses, put back a few, set screens and mostly, just be big. Like I said, I figured he’d be a bit more impressive. He wasn’t, but it’s Summer League. Things can change for him when he’s playing with Eric Maynor and James Harden instead of Garrett Temple and Dwight Buycks.
He did show a soft touch around the rim, especially on Wednesday, while also demonstrating his ability to impact the game challenging shots. He’s got it in him. It’s just about putting together minute after minute of it.
But I would say this: I’m not so sure the job is so obviously his anymore. Hasheem Thabeet is terrible, but if he has a solid camp and Aldrich remains unimpressive, Scott Brooks might go with the 7-3 guy for those spot minutes instead.
Lazar Hayward: B
He played hard, did some good things, hit some shots, rebounded his position well and scored points. It’s not likely to earn Hayward any real minutes going forward but you can see why he’s a solid player to have on the end of the bench and in the program.
A few other notes:
- Latavious Williams had a nice send-off game with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Eight of those rebounds were offensive too. I just really like his game. To me, he’s an NBA player. Maybe not someone in the rotation, but he’s got too much size, too much motor and too much ability not to be. If he can add a solid pick-and-pop jumper to his game and tighten up a few other areas, the Thunder might have a quality Serge Ibaka replacement down the line if it comes to that.
- Garrett Temple has the looks of someone that can fill it up a little. He’s gotten multiple NBA looks and I thought he might have an inside track to that 15th roster spot when the week started.
- Kind of expected to see a little more from Ryan Reid. He’s a tough, rugged 4 and I figured he’d assert himself well on the glass. He was decent, but nothing overwhelming.
- Hasheem Thabeet didn’t play any this week, but he most definitely sat in that chair not moving. Also, did you see him playing with his iPhone? That thing looked like a credit card in his giant hands.
- Somehow, Kent Bazemore didn’t play a single second this week.

@ou_sas damn. beat me to it .
@Legendary_Dork I'm running on 4 hours of sleep. Something has to amuse me.
Do you think Thunder will trade someone before season starts?maybe cook,lazar or even next year picks but I dont want Howard in Okc...Maybe because I dont like the idea of trading james or serge
@Jokazc I don't think the front office is going to make significant moves until after they've figured out what they can do with each of our current guys. It's certainly easier to keep them and continue to improve than to have to go looking for replacements.
Alright, you crazy cats, it's 2 in the morning (and Texas still sucks) and I'm going to bed. I'll catch y'all tomorrow. Don't make too big of a mess while I'm gone - I don't want to miss the fun!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Football i read this years ago, and ever since i started watching okc, and watching harden develop into that third scorer / playmaker, ive had ideas the thunder could put something like this on the basketball floor. this is why i dont make the trade for howard, harden makes something like this possible.
@thunderatom for a basketball version of total football, you really need 5 players who you are confident handling and passing the ball. If team USA puts out a CP3-Russ-Harden-KD-Bron lineup... that'll be a close approximation. My understanding of total football is that everyone can play any position at any time. That's not going to be doable without top talents available for the entire lineup - hence the team USA reference. We definitely will come close though.
@ou_sas yeah i feel like we're closer than anybody else in the league right now. and we make up for what we're missing at the 4 and 5 by having russ be 1-2, harden 2-1-3, and kevin as 3-4. it's like a total triangle, with 2 post positions being reserved for defense, but man if ibaka has to go, and perry develops into that 4-3 playmaker / scorer. we could be scary(scarier) good on offense. I have this idea that when Harden starts, him, russ, and kd, are all gonna average 5 plus assists. and it's just gonna be way too much fun.
@thunderatom I don't know about Adelman, but I do think that having an offseason to put in an offensive scheme will help loads. The off ball movement is something that KD and Russ should get a chance to get coached up on at the Olympics, so hopefully they come back ready and able to continue that trend next year.
@ou_sas hahah i feel like its already happening, we just dont have the sophisticated off the ball movement yet, but it could be way more dangerous, there wouldn't be any set passes to make, that much more dynamic, that much more creative. we have the personnel and we're developing the chemistry, they just have to realise how easily the game could really come, if they all work for each other. we'd be so much closer if we had adelman. oh man.
@thunderatom Perry developing does go a long way towards that idea. Though to be fair, the whole idea of Jackson's triangle offense seems to be predicated along the same lines. I'd love to see something spontaneously generate here just on the basis of talent though.
Royce & Darnell both making excuses for Cole's summer league performance - it ain't happening. Just cause a guy will hustle over to help up a teammate on the ground & provide a hearty leg kick doesn't make him a viable rotational player. Hope Thabeet can provide something.
@Tequila or Failure people on here are sticking up for cole way more than Royce and Darnell
@OBoymuzik Can't speak to the inane ramblings of people around here since I only occasionally read the comments but anyone who feels that Cole is the answer to our backup center position and perhaps our starting center position if we amnesty perk is delusional.
@Tequila or Failure @justin_mia You hurt my internet feelings....
@justin_mia Justin Miami - I don't much care for you. How about you don't reply to my posts & I won't reply to yours, K?
@Tequila or Failure @ou_sas @OBoymuzik Cole has played more NBA minutes than summer league minutes and performed better with those NBA minutes. Nobody is making excuses for Cole. He had a disappointing summer. But some are capable of keeping some perspective. Cole has shown some glimpses of being a useful rotation player against NBA competition, and the role that will be available to him will be forgiving of him being foul prone, or his low stamina.
@Tequila or Failure @ou_sas @OBoymuzik Fair enough, I had just heard enough people talking about the Bulls' centers collectively as if they were no better than stiffs. That's what lead to the question.
@ou_sas @OBoymuzik Wennington? Cartwright? Absolutely better than Cole.
@Tequila or Failure @OBoymuzik I have a feeling that the mid-season thoughts of Cole replacing Perk were more based on disdain for Perk than any genuine belief in and affection for Cole. Cole's an improvement over Nazr, if only because we'll probably end up with the same production - couple of points and a couple of boards over 8-10 minutes - at a cheaper price.
Not having been in the country when it was happening, let me pose this question to those of you who remember. Is Cole honestly any worse than any of the random centers who played on Jordan's Bulls? I don't know the answer to this, but judging from the disdain with which those centers were viewed, I can't say so. You can't have a revelation at every position. You just have to be able to minimize your weaknesses.
@OBoymuzik @Tequila or Failure And even then, it's more a nature of "Don't overreact to Summer League because... it's Summer League." I have moderate hopes for Cole at best - by no means do I expect him to ever be a starting center in this league - but I'm not chucking things out just because he did or didn't do well in the summer league. If he plays 10+ mpg for the first 10 games and gets consistently smoked, then I'll declare him a failure, but until then, I'm reserving judgment.
@Tequila or Failure Less of a hater then the ones in here that hate on proven players:)
@Tequila or Failure @ou_sas @ThunderChick2010 @OBoymuzik That pic was meant more towards the TC comment, not directed at you. I don't disagree that we should expect something out of that pick; but there are far too many posters who have changed their opinions of Cole based solely on his performance in the Summer league - a league which is suited to ball-dominant players ONLY. There are some who are unimpressed with him since the moment he joined the team. That's fine, I respect that. My stance is solely directed at those who are looking at the summer league as this perfect indicator of NBA success or failure.
@ou_sas @ThunderChick2010 @OBoymuzik If hating means I expect something out of a 3rd year, #11 overall pick for whom we traded picks that could have netted us Avery Bradley or bledsoe, then yes, I'm a hater.
@ThunderChick2010 @OBoymuzik @Tequila or Failure What can I say? http://www.hqhumor.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Hatersgonnahate.jpg
@ou_sas @OBoymuzik @Tequila or Failure
You're killing us with all this balance and reason stuff.
The argument is a bit far down there so I don't want to bump it, but in regard to reporters asking questions:
Even though it is part of the job description for a high profile athlete, the interview process is a two-way street. There's too many "how did you play today" type questions and you are going to get bad answers if you keep asking those.
I remember Kendall Hunter, current 49ers and former OSU running back was so shy and socially awkward that you could barely get a word out of him in an interview. For years reporters kept asking the same questions and never got it. In his final season, somebody (I forget who) decided to sit next to Kendall and have an interview by text message. Suddenly Kendall was answering questions and show his personality. It was the best piece I ever saw about a good player who was just shy and boring in interviews.
Got to innovate. It's tough to do it when you interview some of these guys every day, but you reap what you sow.
@Jooseppi
This is probably why Kelly Crull so often uses the "What was the difference . . . " question stem in her interviews. Those are a little harder to answer in just one word.

@DennisBerry lebron with his classic poop face.
@DennisBerry Russ would be the one to sit right in the middle...hahahaha
@DennisBerry lebron is disgusted like the rest of us with the ESPYs and man kobe's hair is really starting to go
@DennisBerry look at Love and Griffin flirting.
@DennisBerry Haha Russ in front of the Beard LOL!
@ElMexiThunder @DennisBerry @ou_sas Russ is protecting james from any exposure that may drive his contract price higher
@DennisBerry Why do all the white guys have to be in the back?
@ou_sas @OBoymuzik @ElMexiThunder only acting role ever where I didn't hate Marlon Wayans.
@OBoymuzik @DennisBerry @ElMexiThunder Man, I wish he were more like that. "Dude, you can be the real 6th man! Nobody would even know you were on the floor!"
@OBoymuzik @ElMexiThunder @ou_sas wonder how much LeBron'b'em paid Trina to sabotage him. James fell for the okie doke too, has he not read the Sampson and Delilah story?
@DennisBerry @ElMexiThunder @ou_sas james finals :( http://blacksportsonline.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/harden.jpg
@OBoymuzik @ElMexiThunder @ou_sas James is disappearing like in the finals. Here's the less weird looking angle http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7923/615737179.jpg
@DennisBerry this year's usa basketball photography has been downright terrible so far lol
@DennisBerry Russ is trolling James in that pic. That's great!
Hey does OKC have like a 2nd hand sports type store? I need to buy a basketball goal but want to get a more heavy duty set used to save. Like a Spalding Beast or something. Or what's the best place to get one new besides Wally's world?
@DennisBerry I'd guess Acadamy Sports would be a good place to start.
@ou_sas @DennisBerry play it again sports was the place i went to when i was a kid, only locations now are in shawnee and norman
heres the site http://www.playitagainsports.com/locations/list/OK
@OBoymuzik @DennisBerry Academy is going to sell only new, but if you catch the right deal, it may not be a bad price. Possibly comparable to Walmart. I don't know about second hand though... your best bet might be to try some yard sales, unfortunately. But that's way old school.
@DennisBerry @ou_sas i think i'm going to blame the lack of local basketball talent on Play it again sports for not carrying basketball gear
@OBoymuzik @ou_sas Thanks, we used to have a place called 2nd Hand Sports that was great for stuff like this, it's a barber shop now. Somebody on CL in Fort Worth has a SPalding Beast for $200. That's a $1000+ goal, even has Greg Oden (to bring it back to NBA/Thunder) in it's product literature http://www.walmart.com/ip/The-BEAST-by-Spalding-74560-60-Inch-Portable-Basketball-System/9919132
@ou_sas @DennisBerry lol and on the site it doesn't show basketball gear...just realized lol might wanna call before you go there...you wont find anything second hand at academy though i believe
@ou_sas isn't that like in Edmond, which I think is further for me since I'm coming from south (Lawton) up 44?
@DennisBerry http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreLocator_10151_10051_-1
Use 73159 to start.
@DennisBerry There's one on I-240 and Walker, so only about a mile after 44 comes into town. (I live on the South Side, so I get on 44 from south of OCCC all the time.)
