Hello New People: Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb introduced

by Royce Young on October 29, 2012 at 4:29 pm 1,323 Comments

Whoa. Hello, new guy.

It’s moving day for the Thunder. Moving on, moving forward.

Judging by the mood and atmosphere of Oklahoma City’s practice Monday, everyone seems to be getting over the James Harden trade fairly quickly.

Though it was a little odd to see Kevin Martin shooting free throws with Eric Maynor and Jeremy Lamb standing by Kevin Durant watching him intently. There was definitely something missing. Four players, actually.

“It was tough,” said Kevin Durant. “It was a little awkward today not having Daequan, Lazar, Cole and James here. But it’s a new day for us and we’ve been through it before [with Jeff Green], so we’ve just got to move on.”

But as everyone will tell you, they understand the business of the NBA and there’s nothing that can be done to change it. Personnel might’ve changed, but the mission has not.

There are new questions though. Coming in to the season the biggest question hanging over OKC’s camp was who the backup center would be and if Cole Aldrich could handle it. Now? Oh boy. How does Martin fit? Does he start? Can he fill Harden’s role? How long until it takes to mesh?

One answer: Martin will begin the season coming off the bench, according to Scott Brooks.

“I haven’t done much of that but I’m very comfortable with it,” Martin said of coming off the bench. “The other day I watched two games when I came off the bench for Sacramento after an injury and they were two pretty really good games. So I’ll watch some more of that and whatever Coach Brooks wants me to do, I’ll do it.”

As to the other stuff: They’ll get it, eventually.

“Talent isn’t the problem, it’s just going to be chemistry,” Martin said.

Which is a reality that’s been difficult for Thunder fans — myself included — to accept. Remove the emotion of losing a fan favorite and franchise core piece in Harden and look at it simply in terms of what OKC got back and you’ll realize that Martin truly is a very good player that can replace a lot of what was lost in Harden. Tremendous scorer, great shooter and a player that understands how to fit.

He’s not going to play like Harden and things will change on that front, but Martin also has never been in a situation quite like this. He said today the two best players he’s ever played with were Ron Artest and Brad Miller. Think about that for a second. No really, think about that.

“I’ve been wanting to play on a team like this for a while with two other big time scorers,” Martin said. “I knew I’d have an opportunity some day and I’m glad it came this soon.

“I was kind of thinking about it and it kind of reminds me of like a Ray Allen,” Martin said. “Like how he was in Seattle for years and then going over to Boston and playing with two big time players. And you want to sacrifice things for wins. I’ve been wanting to be in a situation like this for a long time, instead of putting up numbers and being done playing in April. I’ve been wanting this opportunity so I’m ready to sacrifice whatever they want me to.”

It was honestly kind of strange the sense of excitement there was around the practice facility. Gone were the feelings of sadness, but instead it was more about, “Let’s see what these new guys can do.” Yes, Harden is gone and the Thunder are a different team, but there’s no turning back now.

“I like what he brings,” Scott Brooks said. “He brings offense, he brings knowledge, he brings playmaking.”

It’s no coincidence that Brooks didn’t say he brings defense though. But that’s something Martin, who is known as one of the weaker defenders in the league, says he’s trying to commit to.

“That’s one thing I made a conscious decision to do this offseason was to go back and being a solid defender,” he said. “I’m not going to be a lock down defender like Thabo or anything, but just being solid playing within the team concept.”

Martin made a solid point about that: He’s never had backup like he has in OKC. In Houston, Omer Asik was aiding help greatly with someone behind him to rely on. Now with the Thunder, he’s got swat machine Serge Ibaka as well as Kendrick Perkins and Nick Collison.

Consider what David Thorpe told Rockets.com about it last week:

“I get text messages from scouts all the time saying they’ve never seen Kevin play defense like this before,” Thorpe said. “I just laugh and say to myself, ‘Well, he’s never had Omer Asik on his team before.’”

And don’t write off Martin as a potential pick-and-roll player and creator. Check this from Jason Friedman of Rockets.com:

“Last year K-Mart ranked in the 94th percentile when operating out of the pick-and-roll, averaging .988 points per possession according to Synergy Sports. And though all the standard sample size caveats apply, it’s at least worth noting that Martin currently ranks No. 1 in the league when operating out of the pick-and-roll, producing a ridiculously gaudy 1.385 points per possession so far this preseason.”

So that’s encouraging. He’s not an isolation player. He scores within the rhythm of the offense and when he doesn’t have an opportunity, moves the ball. He no black hole. He’s not James Harden, but he’s not J.R. Smith either.

It’s a strange post-Harden world the Thunder are living in. It’s kind of awkward, it’s definitely weird. But it’s not all bad either.

On having coached Martin before helping: “It definitely helps, but it also helps that he’s a good player. I know a lot of people that can’t play that I’m very close with … You can’t make good guys good players. You can good players decent guys.”

On Lamb: “With Jeremy he’s like a lot of our younger players that we’ve had here. We’re going to develop him. We’re going to improve him. We’re going to make him the player that we think he can be. And we’re going to do it every day. We don’t take days off here. And he won’t have a day off.”

On chemistry: “That’s something that we’ve always been great with. There’s no question that that’s one of our strengths is the chemistry of our team. But added to that, maybe what trumps that is the character of the guys that we have on our team. We have guys that have high character and they believe in each other.”

KEVIN MARTIN

On the Thunder: “Coming in to an organization and a team that’s building a great tradition with a great supporting cast and community, I just think they have the right makings for any player to want to come and play for them … As an outsider looking in you can tell they’re like a family. That’s how the Spurs and Celtics built success. They’re right up there with them. So I think that’s the most intriguing thing about joining this team.”

On when he heard about the trade: “I thought I was getting punked.”

On Jeremy Lamb: “He’s a tremendous kid. I had a talk with him because he was only in Houston for three weeks and got traded so it’s got to be tough for a 20-year-old kid like himself. A very good kid, and on the court he just wants to learn. I told him this is a much better opportunity for him to learn how to win with two of the best players in the league teaching you the way with a great organization.”

JEREMY LAMB

On when he got the news: “If you had a video camera on me, y’all probably would be laughing. When I got the call I was just like, ‘Huh?’ I was like ‘Stop playing.’ I thought it was a prank call. It was surprising, but it was good news.”

On getting to learn from KD: “He’s real consistent. He goes full speed. He was here before practice and after practice. That’s the stuff you need from you leaders, great players. And if he can do it, you know what I’m saying one of the best players in the world, he doesn’t have to do that, that’s something I definitely should do.”

RUSSELL WESTBROOK

On Harden: “James is a good friend of mine. He’ll always be a good friend of mine. Just because he’s on a different team doesn’t change the friendships.”

On chemistry: “You can’t duplicate it, but we have a group of guys that have been here for a while. We’re switching the team up a little bit but every year we’ve had a different team and we’ve found a way to incorporate guys and make sure everybody knows what it takes for us to win. So I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.”

On the change: “I don’t think we’re like down and out. We got guys coming in who’ve got to come in and make adjustments. But we got to find a way to still win games.”

On if he spoke to Harden recently about the contract stuff: “Nah, not much. I kind of left him alone. I didn’t want to pressure on nobody but I did talk to him previous before that.”

KEVIN DURANT

On losing Harden: “People get it confused. We get attached with these guys more than just basketball, and you build relationships with them and their families over these last few years. Just to leave like that, it’s always tough like that if it’s your friend.”

On Martin: “Kevin can fill it up pretty quickly. I’m sure you guys have seen that over the last few years.”

On Lamb: “It’s like we got two top five picks in the draft with him and P-Jones.”

I know a lot of you will disagree, but the fact that James really does seem like he was completely shocked and devastated by the trade makes me really sad. I imagine he was getting some bad advice from his agent who was telling him Presti was bluffing. For all we know, if James would've known this truly was the concrete final offer, maybe he would've made the sacrifices he had talked about.

supreme35
supreme35 5pts

@dollarbillrussell I'm feeling the same way. Waiting things out till the last possible minute is typical in negotiations. Him and his agent probably thought with such a big decision that Presti really wouldn't jump the gun. The fact that Presti only gave him limited time on the final offer seems like Presti had already gotten to the point where he was moving on to the trade. James really didn't have all summer to decide like some are claiming. You can't really make a decision when you don't really know what the details of your possible decisions are. When you see the offer in front of you that is when you really can weigh everything out. It makes such a huge decision seem very rash.

And here is James' take on the trade. Its seems to becoming clear that he didn't think he was going to be traded.

@supreme35 Hard to tell, but it sounded like he wasn't all that happy with the performance of his agent.

Lamb shot 60% from 2-point range last year. For a perimeter wing in the Big East, that's a remarkable performance.

Question, if Harden ends up bombing in his role as franchise player and becomes just another example of a horrible contract in the league, will that soften the blow for anyone around here or will people still remember the good old days and the production he had in the 6th man role with this team and ignore the Houston situation?

I mean if he ends up looking overpaid in Houston then all of the sudden that slump he was in over the course of Finals/Olympics/Preseason starts to look like foreshadowing and Presti looks like a genius for recognizing that James was a product of his unique role who didn't deserve to be paid like a franchise player.

An "if" obviously but I just think we should watch this play out before grading it.

supreme35
supreme35 5pts

@Old Man Game Everything is speculation at this point. Presti seemed to have jumped the gun on the trade only giving James an hour to decide on the last offer.. for all we know James could have ultimately taken less than the max. Some things will probably never really be answered. This could be a lose lose situation for both organizations. Houston for thinking they could build their organization around James and the Thunder for never making up for losing a piece that had a big role in them being championship contenders. If James doesn't become the franchise guy for Houston that doesn't diminish that he could have continued to excel and been the difference maker apart of the Thunder.

From ESPN insider:

"Here's where it gets interesting. Oklahoma City could have as many as four picks in the 2013 draft: its own first-round pick, the Dallas Mavericks' first-rounder (protected for picks 1-20), the Toronto Raptors' first-rounder (protected for picks 1-3 and 15-30), and the unprotected Charlotte Bobcats' second-rounder (which is basically like owning another late first-rounder). This affords the Thunder enormous flexibility in shaping their roster for years to come.

I've always felt that many people misunderstand the value of draft picks; more often than not, it's not about the opportunity to snag a star player at way below market value. Draft picks allow you to replace role players at way below market value. In the example of the Thunder, the presence of Reggie Jackson on a scale contract makes it easier for Sam Presti to say he'll take a wait-and-see approach on extending Maynor.

By having role players locked into manageable deals, the Thunder can afford to pay the big bucks to their stars. Of course, in the case of the Toronto pick, there is a chance they could land a top-five draft choice, meaning a possible shot at a Cody Zeller or a Nerlens Noel.

On the other hand, it is unlikely a team contending for a championship will carry four rookies next season. That's where the secondary value of draft picks comes into play as currency on the trade market. Presti can package a combination of some of the picks to upgrade his roster or, down the line, to incentivize a team to take Perkins' contract. For example, as thePhoenix Suns continue their own reconstruction project, would they entertain a Perkins-for-Marcin Gortat deal if OKC threw in a couple of draft picks?"

The Toronto "guaranteed" lottery pick is being underrated by those pessimistic about the draft. The fact is Houston traded Kyle Lowry, who played remarkably last year, for that pick. Therefore, it stands to reason that OKC if they wanted to could flip that pick today for a very productive veteran. It's one of the best trade chips in the league.

The Charlotte 2nd round pick is going to be the 31st pick in the 2013 draft. They are awful. The 31st pick in the draft is probably more valuable than the 30th pick because you're getting first round talent without having to pay slotted first round money. Gives you ability the flexibility to signing the picks, especially the Eurostashes who outperform their draft position after being stashed for a few years. The pick is also a great trade chip.

The trade deadline is going to be interesting this year. Any team looking to move a star player is going to want lottery picks and prospects. The Thunder have each.

Justin quit being a pessimist hater for life.  Trust me you ll enjoy your days better.  We lost a shooter, so we gained two shooters.  Cook wasnt reliable.  Our bench is better.   Maynor, Martin , Lamb, Colli and PJ3.  Better.  Cole was not that good.  Harden was great but we would have lost more keeping him.  We still have 2 roster spots.  Cole will easily be replaced.

okcjim

@OkcBaby he's assuming the worst of all of this. The worst wont happen. KD, Russ and Serge will all take another step forward (Lebron is still improving you know our guys are too), Martin going against 2nd teamers like Harden did will give similar production. Especially since he actually has his body in shape and is motivated this year. The addition of Maynor, Lamb and PJ3, after a few months of seasoning, will be an upgrade over our 2nd group last year. By the time the playoffs roll around we'll be a better team than we were last year. Mark it down.

okcjim

For the record Lamb, Maynor and PJ3 will be replacing rookie Reggie, Cook and Mohammad. Those guys didn't give us much at all last year. I hope people don't look at what we are the first month and decide that's our finished product (which I'm sure will happen). By year end that 2nd group will be rolling. Just based on summer league production who would you rather have Cole or PJ3 and Lamb??

I like what I'm seeing from lamb looking at his college highlights game posted on this thread in RealGM http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1197768&start=105#p33091735

He is very long. Smooth. Covers lots of grounds. And his footwork is impressive! And he has a good handle and a quick release (very high too because of his length)! He may not have the same impact in terms of playmaking ability with Harden. But, I think in the long run we can expect great production from him.

I've been trying to talk myself into liking this trade for the past two days, but I really can't.  OKC lost its third best player on a Finals team for a low lotto rookie, and draft picks.  Our new sixth man has missed 30% of his games the last five seasons.  Our bench lost a shooter, and we also lost our second best center.  We traded our third best player and not only did we not get a front court upgrade, we got a downgrade.  How does that happen?  We have two reliable three point shooters on the roster.

I'm excited about Jeremy Lamb and what Presti might be able to do with the draft picks, but man.  When you stop drinking the Kool Aid, this trade really sucks - and if the prospects and picks don't work out?

@justin_mia hmm, the front court bit hurts, but how much better is aldrich than thabeet really ( im sure its quantifiable, but like really really?)? was cook really productive enough to count as the loss of shooter? (maybe lamb shows a decent enough stroke to do the same?he's bigger than cook, and cook was getting sf minutes)the martin injury bug is real, but maybe with less strain, he can stay healthy? a lot of if's to be sure, but i dont think any of them are soo far-fetched that we cant be at least slightly optimistic.

@StretchNeuron  @justin_mia Our center position is really thin...literally 7'3-265lb thin, but we don't need a productive center, we just need a space eater. "The Dream" may almost do it. I  hope he just gets about 5-7 rebounds and a couple blocked shots and he's more than done his part. But we may have to get back Orton or go after a rebounding PF. On the other hand, the thing I most like about Kevin Martin is the guy is money on the free throw line. And that has always been an OKC trait.

[censored]

@StretchNeuron Like I said, whether Cook is making threes or not, Maynor-Harden-Cook was a seriously productive group in 2010-11.  That is a lot of ifs.  Even if those ifs you mentioned work out the team is still probably worse today.  Long term, maybe they can win out, but it will take a lot of luck with Lamb and the picks.  Not every player develops into a James Harden.

@justin_mia im not sure what to think yet, but just curious, in your opinion, did presti make this move believing he would sacrifice a shot at the championship this year for shots down the road (perhaps after miami and LAL break up) or does he believe that this team will not be significantly worse off this year?I understand the long-term value, but I dont know what to think for the short term- the consensus seems to be we got a little worse, but im not sure how much worse, and what that means for our championship aspirations.

[censored]

@Thunder S I don't know what Presti thinks but it seems implausible that he could believe that the team is not worse after the trade.  Presti has access to more than we do, and we know (or should know) that Kevin Martin is not as good as James Harden and he is injured all the time.  We also know that Thabeet is not as good as Aldrich.  The team will still be in contention provided that Martin remains healthy, but a Finals team got worse.  It's the first time you can really say the team has taken an overall hit on talent since it moved.

okcjim

@justin_mia @Thunder S cole Aldrich is good now?? Lol. It's not a given that Aldrich will hurt us. It's also not a given that Thabeet will have a real role other than playing against the real 1 or 2 centers we play each year if Perkins gets in foul trouble. I think we'll see more small ball with PJ3 with the 2nd group and Collison will guard the 2nd center. You also don't know that Martin won't give us what Harden did in his role.

@RRRWHATEVER  @MisterJohnsonOKC  @justin_mia  @Thunder S I'm thinking KD averages 4-5 assists this year. (Starting point to completing his all-around game) And RW gets his assists back up to 7-8. (Making him a scoring POINT guard) Maynor is back, so we shouldn't turn the ball over as much with our second unit while he is at the helm. This should translate to us having a much better assist to turnover ratio, which was our Archilles Heel last year. These are my new hopes for the season. (Since my last hope is now in Houston)

@justin_mia  @Thunder S  I'm also not a huge fan of this trade. Harden is the 3rd or 4th best SG in the NBA. and the only one under 30( wade's over 30 right?).

However If Presti is the 10 moves ahead GM Here's what He's thinking

1. Dont F*** with me on negotiations or i'l ship you out. this will help keeping future extensions down

2. Kevin Martin is almost as good as harden at getting to the line and hitting 3's. With Russ, Maynor and KD's improved ball handling losing some of that isn't a big deal.

3. Jeremy Lamb could be Kevin Martin/Rip Hamilton/Reggie Miller 2.0, He played 2 years in college, so he's not a 19yr old rookie. he can shoot and he's on rookie scale for another 4 years

4. This next years draft is loaded with big guys, and the raptors pick should be high. (i think that might be a mistake, and the raptors could be good ish this year)

5. this new luxury tax is Crazy. and can be up to $3.50-1 if you are over it for enough years, and the thunder with harden would be a contender for the next year

6. Lazar and Cook got Salary dumped clearing the roster of all its worst contracts, and freeing up some roster spots

@RRRWHATEVER  @MisterJohnsonOKC  @Thunder S I understand it would be hard to do and cost a lot in luxury tax payments down the road, and maybe it would have to be broken up eventually.  But this was a special thing going on.  Like Jax said in his big reaction post, it's most disappointing to know that OKC isn't one of the big boys and will have to make cost conscious decisions like this forever.

@justin_mia  @MisterJohnsonOKC  @Thunder S yea man, i cant lie... i had a whole thing wrote but i had to delete it. they did sacrifice the chance for the dynasty to save money. thats actually more disappointing than losing harden.

@MisterJohnsonOKC  @Thunder S Cook was a big factor until he was forced to start, and the Maynor-Cook-Harden lineups in 2010-11 were some of our most productive lineups.  Will Maynor-Martin-Jones be the same?  Even if you don't feel Thabeet is a downgrade from Cole (which is crazy), we still lost a center.

@justin_mia just got to keep trusting presti and the plan man. Part of me feels like maybe he really did just want to get rid of james. harden sounds like he really was surprised, like he really thought he would just bargin another day or two then sign regardless

@RRRWHATEVER "Trusting Presti" sounds like a religion.  There's a lot more at work here than just Presti - there's ownership and the bottom line.

@justin_mia @RRRWHATEVER we made it to the finals with a 2nd unit last year of Reggie, harden, cook, Collison and Mohammad. Reggie was a negative most of the time he was in last year and Cook and Mohammad were non factors. A 2nd unit of maynor, lamb, Martin, PJ3 and Collison has a lot more firepower potential. I consider our 2nd unit and upgrade when we get the 2 rookies comfortable. Aldrich and Cook were not big losses. Thabeet is as good as Aldrich and I think PJ3 and Thabeet made Aldrich expendable. I still think Martin will surprise you and be everything Harden was filling that role of 3rd option with the first group and primary 2nd group. I think by year end we'll be a better team than we were last year.

@justin_mia  @RRRWHATEVER Hey Justin...I get it. I'm down too. But I think it's just because I loved Harden that much. The thing is, as much as he preached team first, and wanting to be in OKC and taking less. He (or his agent) didn't budge off his number. So Presti did his Presti thing, and got us the best thing out there. I am trying to be positive here and we got us some great talent: PJ3, Lamb, RJ and Maynor back. And don't forget about Kevin Martin, hope he doesn't get injured. We might have gotten more athletic than last year, and we can still fill 2 more slots with free agents. I'm just trying to look at the glass half full.

@RRRWHATEVER That's our bench unit as far as I can see it, as the roster is constructed - unless Brooks goes back to a 9-man.

@justin_mia man that line up should only play if we are up 16 and you know it.. serge would have to play, at least.

 @RRRWHATEVER Look at this lineup:

Thabeet-Collison-Jones-Martin-Maynor

Now imagine it with Lamb in for Martin during the games that Martin will miss.

Our starting lineup was -5 points per 100 possession in the playoffs last year.  The next seven most used lineups were all positive, and all featured Harden.  It's our non-starting lineups that got the job done for us, especially in the playoffs.  Things can still all fall into place, but wil they?  Hard to say.

@justin_mia yea, but i'm just hoping lamb and perry really pan out great. And i still think we could win a championship this year, even without another trade, which could still happen during the season

@justin_mia i've at least got to be optimistic now, cuz if the season starts and the team doesnt gel well and we go like 7-8, ill be in a bad place
