Israel Gutierrez of ESPN.com says KD had the best opening month: “Quietly, KD is showing off a complete game in Oklahoma City, helping the Thunder easily adjust to the loss of James Harden. He’s scoring a bit less than he’s used to, but he’s averaging career highs in shooting percentage, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. That gives him a slight edge over super-efficient LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.”
Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus with a reasoned take on the Spurs resting players: “Honestly, I’m not sure taking this option out of Popovich’s playbook will hurt San Antonio much. I preface this by saying that Popovich knows far more about basketball than I ever will and understands his team and his players. Additional rest will surely help the Spurs on Friday, but in the long run I don’t think it makes a difference. We’re talking about a difference of about 30 minutes. That’s the equivalent of playing less than a half-minute fewer per game over the rest of the season. The way Popovich uses depth to manage his stars’ playing time on a nightly basis is a far bigger factor in how fresh the team will be come April and May.”
Daryl Morey: “I think Sam [Presti] is the best GM in the league. I mean, he’s really * really * good.”
Nick Collison and Wayne Coyne hanging out.
Zach Lowe of Grantland on Stern and Pop: “There is a bit of a slippery slope here, too, though not one that will really play out in life. There was a minor outburst of anti-Pop sentiment early in the 2010-11 season, when he pulled most of his key plays from a game against New York with the Spurs down 11 (and Parker on the line for two free throws) and about 3:15 to go. The game was still very much in play, but Popovich understood the odds and opted for rest with the second end of a back-to-back looming. And just two days ago, Phoenix, in the middle of a long trip and on the second end of a back-to-back, essentially tossed in the towel midway through a 40-point loss in Detroit. Should we fine teams for that stuff, too?”
Sam Presti was at Oklahoma State’s practice yesterday.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com: “I don’t begrudge Popovich’s right to strategize in the least, nor can I really dispute his opinion about the schedule. But the NBA is about more than Popovich and the Spurs and their particular priorities. It is a $4 billion business — soon to be $5 billion, if Stern’s revenue estimates are correct. It is a show, and Popovich cheated the script Thursday night — not to mention the paying customers. Did Popovich consider that the outcome of the game ultimately will affect teams other than those involved in it? Obviously not. Miami gets a victory — albeit more difficult than it should’ve been — that could have a direct bearing on Eastern Conference playoff seeding. Should Popovich care about that? Maybe he should and maybe he shouldn’t, but he most assuredly does not.”
Darnell Mayberry on Russell Westbrook: “But what’s made Westbrook a lightning rod for criticism in the past is his propensity to play out of control, which often raises the question of whether he has any concept of how best to lead his team to wins. Westbrook’s way of winning hinges on playing with nonstop energy while relentlessly attacking defenses every moment he’s on the court. It’s an erratic style that the Thunder has embraced, choosing to focus on how the positives outweigh the negatives.”

Derek Fisher will be wearing #6 this year...in reference to wanting his 6th ring. #Delusional
What do you guys think about trading for Robin Lopez, giving him a haircut and telling opponents he's really Brooke Lopez? It could work right?
@anonymous12345 robin lopez has a very distinct running form.

Soooo much trade talk.
@BallSoHard If you think its bad now, just wait until February
@BallSoHard #DTtradez
Everyone wants to make a deal just to make a deal it seems like. I don't think Gortat is an option and I don't think Calderon is an option. Aldridge makes 13.5 this year, 14.6 next year and 15.75 the year after. So I don't think that deal works either.
Verijao probably makes the most sense. He makes 8.3 this year, 9 next and 9.7 the year after. I'm not sure he's enough of an upgrade over Perk to warrant a our best assets though.

@MisterJohnsonOKC @okcjim I don't think this team makes a deal with a PCT over .650 at the break, unless it was comparable to the Pau Gasol trade.
@MisterJohnsonOKC @okcjim I don't think Gortat is an option unitl next year when he's an expiring. They'll hold onto him until then.

Sorry. It still makes me laugh
@#sheem @f5alcon 10 pats for thabeet, and an extra for KD O.o
I think the best upgrades we could make by the deadline would be acquiring Varejao and Calderon for maynor, perk, rookies, and picks. Yay or Nay?
@DSYIII Calderon can't be easily acquired. Making $10.5 million this season. Difficult to make the salaries match without including Perk, and I assume Perk's salary would be used to off-set Varejao. Toronto over the cap, Cleveland under by about $6.5 million.
@DSYIII nay. do the #s even work for this?
not to mention, calderon is in the last year of his deal. so trading rookies + picks to get him is a waste. need a roster with rookie scale contracts.
@propsizzle @DSYIII No, the numbers don't work out for getting both. But I would be happy with either. Calderon I like precisely because he is an expiring contract, and thus we don't have to keep his hefty contract long term. Varejao I like as our starting C through 2015. Varejao would cost more in terms of trade parts, Calderon would be an ideal way to play small more and put a real playmaker with the second unit.
@propsizzle http://cdn.bluetoro.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/serge-ibaka-jose-calderon.jpg
But they look so happy together...
@propsizzle @DSYIII When you look like that, you don't have to know how to wear a hat.
No homo...okay kinda homo
@DSYIII all i see is that serge needs to learn how to wear a hat.
@DSYIII Absolutely. I mentioned targetting Calderon a while ago, and I don't think there's any question Varejao is twice the player Perk is.
Calderon makes too much, no way too acquire him without giving up Perkins or some combination of Thabo, Collison, etc. Or Martin.
@justin_mia My original proposal was Perkins as part of the trade. I would rather the team be forced to play their "untraditional" smallball unit than play Perk. Our defense hasn't been terribly harmed without him, and a Calderon-Westbrook-Martin/Thabo-KD-Ibaka lineup would be absolutely devastating offensively.
followup:
Both Martin and Westbrook shoot better when on court together from both 2pt an d3 pt distances, with Westbrook going up more when together vs not.
and yet... it appears the Thunder have maximized their time apart to the near absolute max, casually or on purpose. It appears it might be wise to go the other way.

@MisterJohnsonOKC @Crow is just a throw it out there kinda guy. i can honestly say ive never seen a post by him and gone FUUUUUUUUUUU i hate you crow!!!! lol
@Legendary_Dork @MisterJohnsonOKC maybe i've changed some but so has the reception to me (thanks). I was and can still be less than easy to take at times, for some or many. but i am glad it works fairly well, a good portion of the time.
@MisterJohnsonOKC @Crow royce needs to do DT awards at the end of the year. Like most improved poster, The ive come a long way *who went from 0 to 1000 points or something*. Likes given, to likes received ratio. Most stats. Funniest line . ect..the list goes on and on. :D
@Legendary_Dork @MisterJohnsonOKC yeah they could be interesting... done by Royce or another.
@MisterJohnsonOKC thanks man. that is basically what i am going for.
@Crow Switch Durant and Westbrook on the current first half substitution pattern, maybe?
@Jooseppi probably would have to
@Jooseppi @PerkPunt i guess i'd try for no time without 2 of them or if someone has to go alone for a few make it Durant.
should be 90 minutes @Jooseppi @PerkPunt
@Jooseppi @PerkPunt It appears that the only one to play any minutes without one of the other two is Martin and the results are -19 in 90 and should be avoided in anything other than garbage time.
@Jooseppi @PerkPunt i have to do a bit of data manipulation to give a data answer but others could give an observation answer if they wish
@PerkPunt It was similar but a bit different. More data now, more things to go on. Some things should clearly be avoided.
@Crow Who would you build the only-one-on-the-court time around? Easy answer is Durant with the better role players (Collison, Thabo) I would think.
@Crow @PerkPunt @Jooseppi If we acquired a better backup point guard (one brooks trusts to run a Martin-less 2nd string), these issues could be greatly alleviated.
@PerkPunt the trio is together about 18 minutes per game and is very good.
Somewhere during the game we'd have the full benchof horror in effect might only be 2 mins but you still get it
@PerkPunt @Crow @Jooseppi martin-westbrook and martin-durant are both good and almost equally good.
no martin or westbrook is rare but not good.
@Crow Agree on that.
Straight swap would be three-guard, Westbrook-Maynor-Martin for a time. Breaking up Martin-Maynor pairing is probably a good idea, at least for long stretches, due to the defensive issues.
@Crow @Jooseppi They did. That was the first pattern. Bench production took a hit
@Jooseppi should have 2 of the 3 out there almost all the time
On Aldridge, I see Portland and other media talking about whether to trade Aldridge but no solid reports of any actual trade talk.
He is currently taking 82% of his shots as jumpers and hitting only 40% of them. Don't like that, noticeable changes on both from last season. RAPM still likes him but really good RAPM on bad teams might be overdone.
@Crow he is so damn good in the post.it bothers me to see him neglect it.
@PerkPunt @Crow yeah, doesn't appear to be getting the right coaching or listening to it on shot selection.
@DSYIII @PerkPunt yeah, kinda of a slot where you might coast... paid big, no team expectations. but some of the best teams might not like it and do less to get him as a result. or maybe they read thru it.
@Crow @PerkPunt Maybe he just decided to "rest his starters" this season to save his body for when he ends up on a better team.
