Saturday Morning Cartoons: K-Mart can fill it up

by Royce Young on November 17, 2012 at 8:00 am 779 Comments

Happy weekend. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. Weekends are better than weekdays.

I obviously know why, but it’s been interesting how big a deal people have made about James Harden scoring like crazy in Houston. Because Kevin Martin did that with probably better regularity with the Rockets too, and no one made much of it. He’s had a 50-point game in his career, and a 48-point game. And he once scored 32… in a half. What’s obvious, even through just 10 games, is that Martin can prolifically score. He’s picking his spots in different ways as a third or fourth option now, but there’s no reason the Thunder shouldn’t be taking complete advantage of his scoring abilities.

Tonight will be interesting I have both David Lee and Curry on my fantasy team, so I want them to do well... but not too well obviously

@AIaska you can safely hope for points, hopefully you don't ask for too many rebounds and assists though.

some Alec Burks from summer league if anyone is interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5T5SY9wqa8

all the videos of him from real games were dunks in garbage time with inspirational music, no thanks.

@OBoy Jones III The only way I'd be remotely interested in Burks is if he could replace Martin and OKC could use the Martin $$$ to get a big guy.  But Burks hasn't shown anything and can't shoot so.

Rondo is averaging more assists than points

Guess the 18 assists (& a win) Jose got today was meaningless too.

senseandsenescence
senseandsenescence 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@PJthe3 bka ... Assists are not meaningless, but they are an unfair assessment of a player.  A player's shooting is entirely on them.  They have to make the decision to shoot given the circumstances (distance, defender's proximity, chance of help defense, time on clock, etc) and then execute the shot.  If they miss it is a combination of a bad decision and/or a percentage working against them.

An assist on the other hand is much more dependent on the player's teammates than the player.  Westbrook plays at least half of his minutes with a spot up shooter in Serge, a spot-up/iso player in KD, a spot up "shooter" in Thabo, and an player that takes so long to shoot any assisted makes don't count as an assist (yes I'm exaggerating, sorry Perk, and please don't attack my player characterizations as they are meant to be solely from the perspective of Russ as the ball handler).

Rondo on the other hand plays with Garnett and Bass who are basically spot up mid-range shooters, Pierce who is a spot-up/iso player, and formerly perhaps one of the greatest spot up shooters of all time.  I haven't watched the Celts this year, so I don't know who is playing in Allen's place, but you can be sure that Lee/Terry/Celtic X is probably a spot up shooter.

When you play with 4 spot up shooters as Rondo does, you know if you pass them the ball when they are open there is a high percentage that you will get an assist and your team gets a bucket.  When you play with two spot up shooters (and Serge was kind of iffy prior to this year), a spot up "shooter" and a guy that you hope won't turn the ball over for at least two seconds, you have about a 25% chance of getting an assist when you pass the ball to the open guy.

PJthe3 bka ...
PJthe3 bka ... 5pts

@senseandsenescence I don't need a thesis on assists.. I'm very familiar with how they work ... My comment didn't even mention Westbrook nor did I imply that Westbrook had anything to do with it... It stems from a comment someone made earlier, which also wasn't in reference to Westbrook ... Either way tho, a person who gives assists generally deserves credit for FINDING the open man, getting them the ball when they are open, or helping to get them open ... These are 3 things which rondo is better than 98% of anybody at.

PJthe3 bka ...
PJthe3 bka ... 5pts

& my stance on rondo does not solely relate to assists .. I don't know who is the best PG, they all bring different things to the table.. Where 1 ranks them depends on their preference for 1 attribute over another... But if they all are at the table, you ain't tell me that rondos chip stack ain't equal to others (based on assists & rebounds & defense & etc)

 @PJthe3 bka ... The TL;DR:

Some teams, notably the Celtics, are designed to take advantage of spot up shots which generate quite a few assists for the ball handler.

(Most) other teams like the Thunder do not have the shooters or the system for their PG to regularly rack up absurd numbers of assists.

Ideally lots of Thabo and little Perk and about 10 minutes of Lamb and PJ at the end ;)
