Thursday Bolts – 11.15.12

by Royce Young on November 15, 2012 at 10:25 am 254 Comments

Sports Business Journal: “Team profitability is on the rise in the NBA, fueled by a projected $200 million in revenue sharing among the clubs this year. Total league revenue for 2012-13 is expected to reach $5 billion, according to league estimates, up from about $4.2 billion for the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign. It is expected that 22 of the league’s 30 teams will make money this year, up from 18 clubs last season, which was the first year operating under the NBA’s new 10-year collective-bargaining agreement and with the installation of its new revenue-sharing system. For the 2010-11 season, prior to the new CBA and revenue-sharing plan, eight teams were profitable.”

Jenni Carlson: “NewsOK.com videographer Tim Money was in the bowels of the arena, setting up for the postgame press conference in a room that is right next door to the Thunder locker room, which is only about 20 steps from the visitor’s locker room. He and others in the press conference room heard yelling in the hallway. They thought nothing of it at first; with several restaurants and bars around the court-level, drunk and disorderly folks occasionally have to be escorted out. But the yelling didn’t stop. Then, they heard things hitting the walls and the doors of the hallway. The thudding continued for several seconds. All told, the commotion lasted at least 20 seconds.”

Z-Bo: “Man, I play basketball. I don’t worry about all that. Perk awright. There’s a lot of bluffin’ going on the court, that’s all, you know. And I don’t bluff.”

John Rohde: “The players were separated by Oklahoma City police officers and Thunder security personnel. People in the postgame interview area heard “It’s a fight” and something being slammed against the door. Security members huddled briefly thereafter to discuss the matter, but no action was taken against either player.”

Neil Paine of ESPN.com on overrated and underrated players: “Defensive-minded players are frequently overlooked in the public’s mind, especially if they don’t rack up impressive block or steal totals. Sefolosha is a great example — with a 10.4 career Player Efficiency Rating, 5.4 career points per game, and fewer career steals per game than noted defensive sieve Kevin Martin, you might not realize that Sefolosha has actually helped his teams be 1.8 points better than average for every 100 possessions he’s on the court.”

John Hollinger of ESPN.com says KD has been one of the most disappointing players early: “That jives with his numbers from a year ago. According to NBA.com, he played roughly half his minutes with Harden and half without. In the without portion, he averaged 3.4 points per 40 minutes fewer but 0.6 assists more. Now that his entire season is “without”, he is taking on that performance permanently. That’s terrible news, because Durant’s one-of-a-kind skill is scoring, not making skip passes for Thabo Sefolosha jumpers. As Zach Lowe keeps pointing out, changing OKC’s painfully bad starting lineup to add more scoring is one potential cure. Adding Eric Maynor to the starting group and playing small with Westbrook at the 2 could relieve some of Durant’s playmaking burden and make it easier for his scoring game to shine.”

Darnell Mayberry: “Serge Ibaka did a fantastic job throughout the night guarding Randolph. It showed Ibaka’s continued growth as a position defender. He was physical. He crowded both Randolph and Gasol. He contested shots. And he stayed down on the majority (not all) of their fakes. Ibaka’s performance easily will be lost in this defeat. But he played his butt off tonight and provided even more reason for optimism going forward.”

Matt of 3 Shades of Blue: “As Charles Barkley says, ‘you got to have a crazy guy’. Ask Kendrick Perkins, he might tell you the Griz have two (and Ken Mauer almost certainly would). ZBo is one of the only guys in the NBA who is completely unafraid to get in Perkins’ face, and I just love it. Odd to see two ejections without any strictly extracurricular physical contact-they must have been saying some very magical words to one another. Also loved Gasol popping Westbrook in the head and drawing a rise out of him. Funny stuff. No, Gasol’s not the other crazy guy, that’s TA of course, but it was just fine to see Gasol take out a bit of frustration with his offensive slump on one of the guys in the NBA who is most consistently an annoying gnat in the ear of his opponents.”

My 2 thoughts....

(1) - The team stops moving on offense when Russ starts callling his own number too often. Its great that Westbrook can take over a game and get a shot whenever he wants but it sometimes kills the offensive chemistry when he does it 2 or 3 times in a row early in the game when it is not needed.

(2) - Teams have obviously figured out how to knock the ball out of Durants hands when he drives.  Didnt it happen like 50 times last night? (Some fouls, some turnovers and some out of bounds) Durant needs to recognize that and start pulling up early for the shot or hold it like Ibaka when he gets in traffic.

Any agreements or disagreements with my comments?

@Thunder Head I'd reverse the causal relationship in (1). A lot of the time Russ starts calling his own number because the team stops moving on offense, though not always and it's still not a good reason to go hero.

@Thunder Head They need to run KD of screens more to get him open looks.

We need to start sitting collison and maynor if they aren't being productive on the court; fouling at the rim is not good defense  and should be seen as a last resort. collison should not be allowed to waste 5-6 fouls per game on non post threats.

I don't think Royce has ever banned anyone, but I'm pretty sure going after Nick Collison is the quickest way for it to happen

One thing people haven't said is if Rudy Gay plays like  that the whole season and in the playoffs, the Grizzlies have a chance to win it all... They have a crazy good lineup with Gasol, Randolph, Gay, Tony Allen and Mike Conley..The only thing they missed was a star who can make the tough shots cause Gay was too inconsistent..if he plays like a real star, they'll be a real problem and can beat any team including OKC

Just watched the entire game and I have to say our defense was horrible.. I understand we had a bit of a shooting slump but we sort of let them bury us in the second. You can't score? Don't let them score!

Yep its really funny to throw a basketball in someones face during a game. I honestly hope old Matt from 3 shades of blue gets decked with a basketball the next time he plays at the ymca. Russ was about to dog walk Gasol for doing that and we all know how soft the Gasol sisters are.

kennygee90

@kennygee90 I kinda lump both those gasol gals together. I mean Fat Gasol does look tougher but I can see both playing with dolls and having tea parties during the off season. And i 100% think Russ woulda dogged Gasol if he wanted too. Id take Russ over anyone on OKC in a real fight. Also Fat Gasol was pretty soft in his earlier year as the Big Burrito lol

In the position they were in, I think Russ could have done some damage if he had gone low and tackled him and got some shots in.  Noone else was close to them other than the ref to break it up.

I dont see why Gasol shouldn't get fined.  How is smacking the player in the head with a ball different than throwing it at him, which would probably be a fine

@anonymous12345 @kennygee90 Thats true. He did grow up in the Congo. Machine Guns and Wars Lords are a little tougher to make it out of than LA lol No not just looking at Russ aggressivness but the way he carries him self and just the type of little man syndrom he has im sure. I've known dudes liek that. Size dont mean much during a fight imo if you know what your doing in which case i'd say russ can handle himself. But really Maynor is prob the Hardest dude on the squad lol

kennygee90
kennygee90 5pts

@ThunderTheFUp  @kennygee90 your assuming just cause Russ is aggressive in basketball that he'd beat up some of these huge frontcourt players like Marc...he'd get smacked like a kid by Zach Randolph or Dwight if mad...And like @anonymous12345 just said Ibaka is worse

@f5alcon  @OkcBaby  @Legendary_Dork  @Lost Ones "The Thunder still led 36-31 four minutes into the second quarter, when Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook returned and joined Thabo, Martin and Collison. It was 36-36 when Kendrick Perkins returned and restored the Thunder’s big lineup. Memphis outscored the Thunder 20-9 the rest of the half." Bench's fault eh? True they didn't score enough in the game but don't blame it on just the bench. do you actually watch the games or just post BS on here? lol

Things I learned from last night's game:

KD is a competitor, and he and Russ can/will play tough defense when they need to.

Serge is vastly improved from last year offensively/defensively. He still needs to improve his team defense, but he is nowhere near the 1-on-1 liability he was last year.

Russ's court vision has improved (a VERY good thing for the ceiling of this team)

Our bench lacks a guy who is absolutely fearless about scoring, and has complete confidence in his shot (we actually missed Daequan quite a bit IMO). I wouldn't be surprised if we try to pick up someone like aaron brooks to help spice things up.

Our team defense had wayyyyyy too many breakdowns last night. The consistency with which this team defends will determine how far it goes this year.

Russ is definitely the guy on our team I would least like to have "meet me by the bus."

I don't know, I thought it was considerate of Perk to set up a place for the altercation.  I mean what if Z-Bo is sitting there waiting outside the hotel for Perk and Perk is waiting by the bus.  Perk is all about logistics.
