Rob Mahoney of SI.com on KD: “The Thunder’s scoring efficiency in those configurations has been predictably great, but the more startling trend is OKC’s rebounding dominance with Durant as a power forward. We’re talking about shutout work on the defensive glass and a total rebound rate somewhere in the mid-60 percent range — values well above what the Thunder have done overall and what we could otherwise expect. The specific values will settle in as the season rolls on and the minutes played by those lineups tick upward, but this is a trend that could end up making a remarkable difference. Provided that Durant can continue to outrebound and defend opposing bigs, Brooks may finally be compelled into using his team’s most explosive lineup possibilities.”
Beckley Mason of HoopSpeak on Durant: “Durant’s game was likely headed for such an expansion anyways, his drive to improve would naturally lead him in that direction. But it might also be that the Harden trade will accelerate Durant’s growth as a playmaker and evolution within the Thunder petri dish. If that’s the case (and it’s impossible to say now) it would raise an interesting question: given the choice, is it better for Durant to become the absolute best player he can be, or to perhaps sacrifice some of Durant’s peak ability in order to retain the better secondary player in James Harden?”
Sam Anderson of New York Times Magazine talking about his cover story: “The Thunder is a magical team. Everyone wanted to hate them after the debacle over whether the team would stay in Seattle, and many succeeded and even kept it up for a few years. But the team became so likable on so many levels (the personalities, the playing style, the organizational class, James Harden’s beard) that a lot of that hate just melted away. That’s not to say that many people in Seattle don’t hate them still, understandably. But the players are so young, they had all of this potential and then they actually realized it — which is such a rare thing in sports. (I write this as a big fan of the Portland Trail Blazers, which five years ago were on the verge of a Thunderlike feel-good explosion, but then all of their best players’ knees exploded simultaneously.)”
A look at OKC’s Christmas uniform.
Marc Stein of ESPN.com has OKC sixth in his power rankings: “Shooting 50.7 percent on 3s in OKC, Kevin Martin can’t give much more than he’s given to his new team. We’d love to say the same about Russell Westbrook, but the birthday boy had been challenging Nick Young for the unofficial league lead in ill-advised shots until Sunday night.”
John Schuhmann of NBA.com has OKC third: “Well, the Kevin Martin thing is working out just fine. The new guy is still shooting better than 50 percent from both the field and 3-point range, the Thunder are a plus-15 in 50 minutes where Martin has been on the floor with neither Kevin Durant nor Russell Westbrook, and he can’t be blamed too much for the fact that his team still can’t take care of the ball (30th in turnover rate).”
Great stat from reader Dustin on Kevin Martin: Through eight games, Martin is averaging 17.1 ppg on 9.6 shots per game. The only player in league history to average at least 17 ppg on less than 10 FGA is Artis Gilmore in 1980-81.
From Elias: “Russell Westbrook scored 33 points against the Pistons to lead the Thunder to a 92-90 win on Monday, and to increase his career scoring average against Detroit to 15.6 points per game. The only team against which Westbrook has a lower scoring average is the Clippers (14.9 per game).”
Darnell Mayberry: “I mentioned much earlier that the Thunder closed fourth-quarter defensive possessions with rebounds, sort of. That’s because OKC allowed seven offensive boards in the final period. That’s too many. Against a good team, that will get you beat. But the Thunder weathered the storm tonight and continued to give great second and third efforts despite the late defensive rebounding issues. It made the fourth-quarter D that much more impressive while also leaving much to be desired. Get it?”
Dan Feldman of Piston Powered: “The Pistons played fine for the first three quarters – and for Detroit, fine is divine – but the Thunder were playing their second of a back-to-back and fourth game in five days. It was impressive that the Pistons could build a double-digit lead on Oklahoma City in any circumstance, but it’s not terribly surprising that they blew it. The Thunder are simply a level or two above Detroit right now.”

“The Thunder’s scoring efficiency in those configurations has been predictably great, but the more startling trend is OKC’s rebounding dominance with Durant as a power forward. We’re talking about shutout work on the defensive glass and a total rebound rate somewhere in the mid-60 percent range — values well above what the Thunder have done overall and what we could otherwise expect."
Yeah, that's because Kendrick Perkins is a TERRIBLE rebounder. He's somewhat undersized for a center, he doesn't box out, he doesn't get very high off the ground, he doesn't explode to the ball.
Perk says the starting lineup is a very good rebounding team and that's why he doesn't get rebounds. He says he doesn't care about stats. That's bullshit. He doesn't get rebounds because he's not a good rebounder.
There's no question that Thunder are a better rebounding team when Perk is out of the game. The same could be said for Jeff Green when he was on OKC.
@Daniel Hawaii
Stat analysis of lineups shows Thunder are losing rebounding battle with Perkins on the court (by a little) and winning it big with him off so far this season.

so let me ask a legit question. if you had to choose between Big al or LMA for the thunder, whom would you pick and why. *this is saying we get rid of perk ect...*
@Legendary_Dork We need a center not a PF. Easy answer
@Legendary_Dork Wait, we're talking about Al Jefferson, right? That guy that is a black hole offensively, isn't terribly efficient, and doesn't even play defense? I would take LMA hands down just because he plays both ends of the court. Offensively they are equal, with LMA actually being more efficient. Defensively it's not even a comparison as LMA has been one of the best defending big men in the league in previous years.
@Keith00 @Legendary_Dork are u sure u know who lamarcus aldridge is? Hes an awful awful defender
@Legendary_Dork
For either, what to you think Presti is willing to give up, both are in teams that share a division with us. Price might be a little higher.
@PerkPunt not getting either realistically, better chance that we can get al to sign as a free agent to win a title
@PerkPunt @f5alcon lma is one of the best players/scorers in the nba.. Id take him well well over al
@f5alcon
unless LMA just DHoward's them
@Legendary_Dork al, he cant play center, lma is more of a pf
@Legendary_Dork
LMA, he is younger, cheaper, longer, and has more athletic ability than Al. LMA can play the center position he just doesn’t have to. When he did play the center position for portland he rebounded extremely well. 2011(?) i think was the year he started center for at lease 40 something games. That was also the year he blew up and became a more complete player.
Plus something about AL's health worries me.....
@PerkPunt @Legendary_Dork Big Al is only a few months older than LMA
@PerkPunt @Legendary_Dork +1 for you, sir.
@Tronchaser @Legendary_Dork
whelp ....... still younger...Boom!
@Legendary_Dork Big Al, for his rebounding alone. LMA is a better scorer, but I don't think we really have trouble scoring. Our issue is rebounding, and Big Al is simply better. I'm certainly no expert though. :)

@MisterJohnsonOKC @Legendary_Dork Not by much, about ~4 points or so, LMA has a higher USG% though.
Western Conference - 59 wins
Eastern Conference - 42 wins
8 games into the season and there is already a substantial difference between the two conferences. Incredible.
@Tronchaser 6 of our 8 games have been against Eastern Conference foes. That probably skews things a little.
@ou_sas Oh, I know, but the difference was startling to me so early in the season. I think it would only get worse the more inter-conference games that are played.

@MisterJohnsonOKC
Phily gives super max
I'm still shocked the our core guys played the entire second half (I believe). It was necessary in order to win that game, but shocking after 4 games in 5 nights. Didnt seem like a very Brooks thing to do.
@BallSoHard Winning these games in November are the ones that give you homecourt advantage in the playoffs. In years past, we would have just lost the game, and chalked it up to a 4 of 5 or simply a bad shooting game.
I think im ok with calling russ wolverine instead of honey badger. they are both badass but wolverine is definitely more badass.

@MisterJohnsonOKC and honey badger isnt? lol
@Tronchaser @MisterJohnsonOKC wolverine is the best there is at what he does, and what he doesnt isnt very nice.
@Legendary_Dork @MisterJohnsonOKC Honey Badger don't care if it's corny or not.
See? You can't say Wolverine don't care. Bleh, not the same.
@Legendary_Dork I just like saying HBDC.. doesnt have the same ring to it as a wolverine. I think Red Dawn when I hear that.
#old
@Tronchaser i remember red dawn so #alsoold

@ou_sas That's a lot of work
I wish the media gets on KD like they get on lebron about passiveness, he needs to be called out about it.
@Lost Oneslebron makes it easy for the media because he takes everything they say personnaly. LBJ is/was super sensitive . KD really doesnt care.
Out of topic but Its Steelers vs Ravens week!..Just wondering does anyone ever get excited for this game even though most of you guys are not fans of either teams..
@kennygee90 Always excited for the Steelers to lose. Also, I've got a friend who's a die-hard Ravens fan so I get to talk a bunch of shit to him.
@duhsweetness Im a die-hard Ravens fan and this is one of my favorite weeks of the year..smack talking and great tough football and i hate the steelers more than anything... great to see someone who loves this game
@duhsweetness yea it is...but Woodley and Harrison are still playing so the hate is still there ..and Mike Tomlin is coaching..and its always great to look down the steelers in the Division standings
@kennygee90 Probably a lot less exciting for the Ravens to beat up on Byron Leftwich.
@Tronchaser @duhsweetness I've lived in LA then Baltimore, hence the Lakers and Ravens
@duhsweetness yup i was hoping suggs would get a couple sacks on him..
@kennygee90 These two teams get mean when they play each other and it's awesome. Too bad Rapelisberger (probably) won't be playing this week.
@kennygee90 @duhsweetness You have an odd collection of pro-franchise likings.
Per Crow's link in yesterday's bolts, I've been looking at some of our lineup data.
Our 3rd most used lineup so far, K. Durant | S. Ibaka | K. Martin | T. Sefolosha | R. Westbrook, has a +.325 differential in eFG% (our eFG%-opponents eFG%). Still a comparatively small sample size of 20 minutes, but still.
( Source: http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/OKC/2013/lineups/ )
(should add, that's per 100 possessions)
@ou_sas Right.
@Tronchaser @ou_sas Might be temporary but 3 of top 4 most used lineups are currently non-positive on net points.
@Tronchaser @ou_sas Starting lineup better but still -3.5 pts per 100 possessions.
@ou_sas 2 K. Durant | K. Martin | T. Sefolosha | H. Thabeet | R. Westbrook
I like this one. +90 points.
Anyone posted Harden giving 5 to imaginary teammates after a free throw?

@THE SPORTS OPRAH The definition of going thru the motions.
@THE SPORTS OPRAH The Bogut multi-five still reigns supreme. Video just absolutely kills me.
