Berry Tramel: “Thabo needs to play. He needs to play as many minutes as possible. If you need more offense, put in Martin and take out one of the bigs. The Thunder got butchered in Miami last year because Scotty Brooks forgot about Thabo. Thabo has to play around 30 minutes a night. He’s too good on defense, and he’s not in any way an offensive liability. I agree, go ahead and shoot more, Thabo. But he needs to play more, not less.”
Ben Watanabe of NESN.com on KD’s expanding game: “Is this a minor thing, considering Durant has 74 games left in which to get his attempts back up to a workable average? Of course it is, but this is a sign that Durant has entered the upper stratum of NBA stars. James reached that stature long ago, which is why everybody spent the last three or four years fixating on whether he possessed the intangibles to win a championship. Like James, Durant has so few flaws in his game that even his slightest defect could be something opponents hone in on when they game-plan against the Thunder. Whether Durant’s inability to get the free throw line continues or if he magically transforms into Wilt Chamberlain in getting to the stripe may not have much impact on his scoring average or the Thunder’s regular-season record. If the Thunder are to continue their ascension and break through with a title this season, though, they will need Durant getting easy points at the foul line, not just on difficult fade-away jump shots with a hand in his face.”
CBSSports.com’s power rankings have OKC fifth: “The ‘Russell Westbrook sucks without James Harden‘ meme had a good run … of about a week.”
Dan Devine of BDL on Russell Westbrook’s self-assist: “[T]his fourth-quarter moment was perhaps the quintessential Westbrook play — a brain-dead, basketball-doctrine-be-damned moment redeemed by instinct and athleticism at a pivotal spot in the game; from heart attack to hilarity to high-fiving, all in an instant. Like Kobe Bryant, he’s probably bummed that he didn’t get an assist off the “intentional pass to oneself,” but the bucket and the late-fourth lead probably helped a bit.”
The best of #NBAPalate. My personal favorite was Cory Spaghetti.
Some have been floating the nickname “Wolverine” for Russell Westbrook. It definitely fits. So a couple folks made photoshops on Twitter. Here’s one from @ADesigner120 and another from @BehindtheBuzzer and another from @joeluber24.
The worst play in basketball history.
Tom Haberstroh in a ESPN.com 5-on-5 says OKC misses Harden: “And not just in the Thunder’s official store, where they no longer have $10 fake beards on the shelf. What a gut-punch to merchandise revenues. Though Kevin Martin has been downright sensational off the bench, he won’t be able to rescue Russell Westbrook on a bad night and take over playmaking duties like Harden. Then again, that could be Kevin Durant’s role soon enough.”
Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN.com on tonight’s opponent: “Right now, the Grizzlies are flourishing even if they don’t have definitive answers to those questions. Their offense sits at No. 9 thanks to a reconstituted bench that’s been solid, a jackrabbit start from Conley and a big point-center who has turned touch and subtlety into opportunities and production. Is all this stuff sustainable over an 82-game slog? That’s unknowable right now, but a win over Oklahoma City might give us another piece of evidence that the Grizzlies clean up nicely. We might even discover that the Memphis Grizzlies — the Memphis Grizzlies — have found finesse.”

I like Royces contribution to the 5 on 5 from ESPN on whether or not we miss Harden: "Fiction. Through eight games, one thing has struck me: Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook play better with Kevin Martin than they did with James Harden. Now, that's not to be confused with who the better player is -- Harden is, hands down. But in terms of fit, Martin provides a new dimension. The Thunder are no longer a three-headed isolationfest. Their spacing is better, they move the ball more and they get better looks. Will they miss Harden in crunchtime in the postseason, though? That's to be determined."
I think he nailed it with the "Isolationfest."
So what happens when we beat the Grizz by 10+ tonight?
@PerkPunt The last 6 games vs Griz the game has been decided by an average of 5.2 pts per game.
@PerkPunt I really hope that happens, but I seriously doubt it.
Anybody see Kelly's rip move last night in the Duke- Kentucky game? Love it
@TonyMitchellForPresident13 Second round pick possibiility?
ok.
they may not have a 2nd round pick afterall. is it the one boston got for Green?
@dollarbillrussell @Crow you can say what you want but I don't think that was necessary.
@Crow Chill out Crow
Nedovic?
Canaan?
Anybody like Pressey?
@Crow I'm a big Peyton Siva fan, even though his stock has dropped further and further over the course of last year. Worry that his NBA career will fizzle a little though given his playing style. Also really enjoy Kenny Boynton even though he's not really "short".
anybody seen this guy play?
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Raul-Neto-5958/
do you have a favorite short quick PG in the draft?
kind of a quiet game yesterday for wiltjer. may check on him later in the year.
@OBoy Jones III @cemitten ok. wasn't listed properly at a few sites i checked.
Most everybody carries at least 6 guys who can play PF and / or C. A few just 5.
@TonyMitchellForPresident13 PG would be a likely choice if they were in the second round. Not sure what PG choices are best in the 1st.
@Crow @cemitten pretty sure we got the bobcats 2nd round pick back in the Harden trade, Houston had gotten it from Boston in the Courtney Lee sign and trade.
@cemitten can always try to buy or trade for one.
@Crow If we did have a late second rounder, I'd love to go the opposite of our usual train of thought and draft a high-production, severely undersized point guard (a la Scott Machado last year). I'm very partial to my fellow short guys, and plus, how many sorry, no potential other than being tall, bigs do we really need on the roster?
@Crow O yeah, kind of forgot about that. I believe that is the pick in question
@Crow Wiltjer is possibly second round pick material.
apparently it is gone.
@Crow @TonyMitchellForPresident13 Waste of time...he's a good player for Duke, but he isn't an NBA player.
@Bryson @Crow O no, no NBA potential, but I loved his rip move lol
The way hs teammate tries to block his shot... Then shooter puts his head down & just jogs up court like normal ... Hilarity!.. Like he was momentarily possessed. Or has split personality.
How does everyone rank the divisions? I think we have the toughest. 1) NW 2) SW 3) Atlantic 4) Pacific 5) Central 6) SE
@BallSoHard Same as yours but I swap 1 & 2
@twistdov I think the SW is top heavy...ours is fairly balanced.
@twistdov @BallSoHard
LAL, LAC < OKC,DEN,UTH
@PerkPunt @BallSoHard I don't disagree with that :)
Thabo may not need 30 minutes a night... but he's also not a offensive liability.
Like Pau on the Lakers, the Thunder use Thabo wrong or rather in offensive sets that don't leverage his skills.
@THE SPORTS OPRAH He's an offensive liability. His decision making is far too slow on that end of the floor to be helpful in any role, and although he had some bright spots shooting the ball in the early part of last season, he's regressed back to his career averages as a pretty below average to poor spot up shooter.
What role would you suggest he play? He moves well off the ball, but that's useless if you can't finish at the rim, catch and shoot, or be an efficient spot up specialist.
@TonyMitchellForPresident13 he moves. But no one else really does...which means no one's really moving. LOL
How many Times has KD passed the ball and just stood there. If the whole team moves -- Thabo will look/perform better. That's how he was able to average 23ppg in whatever league he was in.
So I'm having a bad early start to the day.. here's hoping the Thunder win so it ends on a good note.
there is probably something else nice you can do for yourself, if you want. an option if you want to balance things.
@Crow True that. Real happiness should be from things you can control.
http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/28005_10151109267116006_492266603_n.png Niceee,but I wouldn't buy them
I love how that Widdoes guy on ESPN's 5-on-5 using that fact that we're 24th in assists and next to last in turnovers as evidence for us missing Harden. Has he never seen a Thunder game prior to this season?
@dollarbillrussell Hey, we don't need any evidence to know that we miss the Beard...and I think he misses us, too. The Thunder will still be a great team, but they'll be different.
@TaoMaas I never said that we didnt miss him, just that those were horrible statistics to use as evidence. It'd be like saying "you can tell Harden's distribution is missed, just look at the dip in Perkins' offensive production"
@dollarbillrussell Sorry, man...wasn't picking on you. Only replied to you because you brought up the subject...and I was really musing on missing Harden in an emotional sense, not statistical. Sheesh, what team wouldn't miss a max player...especially one they drafted and developed?
@dollarbillrussell not sure where he is gettign the numbers according to bbref we are 12th in assists this year and were 30th last year
12th in total assists for season but 16th for team assist rate.
may matter most against good defenses though.
6th best on team eFG% so I am not too worried about assists right now.
they are going to be low on assists per game due to their high emphasis on getting FTAs.
@Crow ok, that is still 1.5 apg better than last year
24th here too
http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/miscellaneous-per-game/sort/avgAssists/order/false
@Crow yeah could be, still we were last in assists last year so it isn't like harden helped with that
24th on assists per game at dougstats.
Part of the discrepancy might be related to who is up to date?
@Crow still not 22nd and still better than last year which was his argument for why we miss harden
@dollarbillrussell
Do you know offhand where we stood in these categories 8 games in last season WITH Harden?
@ThunderChick2010 I don't, but I guarantee we were even worse off in assists.
