Friday Bolts – 12.28.12

by Royce Young on December 28, 2012 at 9:55 am 356 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Ethan Sherwood Strauss of Bleacher Report: “We need to find a middle on this whole Russell Westbrook debate. People who yell that a team will never win it all with Westbrook as point guard are probably the same people who doubted that LeBron James could ever get a ring. “Will never” is usually a flawed place to start an argument or discussion. I’m also not with the people who say that we must accept the bad Westbrook plays because it’s all part of his aggressive style. Why sell the guy short if we believe he can be great? There’s no reason for why Westbrook has to take contested pull up threes with 20 seconds on the shotclock. He should cut that out because it’d be a mighty squandering of talent not to.”

Kevin Pelton of ESPN.com on why the Clips are better than OKC: “So far, Del Negro has done a great job of balancing the different choices instead of tinkering too much from night to night. In a possible playoff series against the Thunder, Del Negro would have more flexibility with his finishing lineup than Scott Brooks, who tends to rely on Kendrick Perkins down the stretch no matter the matchups. The Clippers also have a variety of options to defend stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. On the wing, Del Negro will have three solid defenders with length in Matt Barnes, Caron Butler and Grant Hill once Hill works his way back from a bone bruise in his right knee. At point guard, both Bledsoe and Paul are terrific defensively, and Bledsoe is one of the few lead guards in the NBA who can match Westbrook in terms of sheer athleticism.”

KD tweet: “I love Chesapeake Arena, best fans in sports”

Tyler Parker of BallerBall on KD’s coast-to-coast: “Third, the mash. Detonation. Oddjob in Goldeneye. Yoshi in Mario Kart. Using Da Bomb in NFL Blitz 2000. Unfair perfection is what I’m saying. Moment of silence for Chris Kaman right there. He died for two seconds. Durant, because he’s a real American hero and a GI Bro, must have been mad at Kaman for playing for Germany in the Olympics. That slam jam was brought to us courtesy of the red, white, and blue. If Durant stood at the fifty yard line of JerryWorld and held his arms straight up, I think he’d be able to touch the bottom of the jumbo-tron. Does anyone call him “Arms”? Because his arms are so long, you guys. Someone should look into that. Arms. Oh. He also had 40 this game. God was super cool to give basketball fans Kevin Durant.”

Somehow, KD was a bit of an afterthought last night.

Jenni Carlson with one of those columns: “In other words, grow up and get over yourself. He’s looking at you, Russell Westbrook. On the same court where he scored 43 points in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the Thunder point guard reminded us Wednesday that he is still a work in progress. Reinforced, too, that if the Thunder is ever to reach the tip top of the mountain, Westbrook is the key. He has to be better. Good news is, he can be.”

Tom Ziller of SB Nation lists Westbrook as one of the 15 most unforgettable NBA characters of 2012: “Teddy bear chic. Westbrook was also one of the very best players in the entire league. The Thunder’s 2012-13 success without James Harden shows how important to the team Westbrook is in support of Kevin Durant. Don’t forget that Westie, maligned in the 2011 playoffs and taunted as “Westbrick”, played really well all the way through 2012, and even dropped a 40-spot in the Finals. Russ isn’t going anywhere.”

From Elias: “Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook dominated their areas of expertise in the boxscore of the Thunder’s 111-105 overtime victory over the Mavericks. Durant had 40 points, Ibaka collected 17 rebounds and Westbrook contributed 10 assists; no teammate had more than half as many points, rebounds or assists, respectively. It marked only the second game in NBA history – and the first resulting in a victory – in which three different players reached those statistical levels – that is, one scored 40-or-more points, a second had 17-or-more rebounds, and a third had 10-or-more assists – while no teammate contributed more than half as many points, rebounds or assists. On Dec. 4, 2004, the Knicks, then coached by Lenny Wilkens, dropped a 107-101 decision to the Bobcats (then a first-year expansion team) in Charlotte; Jamal Crawford scored 41 points, Nazr Mohammed had 17 rebounds and Stephon Marbury had 11 assists, but no other Knicks player had half as many in any of those categories.”

Darnell Mayberry: “One last thing about Jackson. Can everyone please give the guy a chance before making judgments one way or another? Keep this in mind. Jackson hasn’t been through the NBA circuit a full time yet. He’s still playing opponents for the first time. Players naturally get better as they become more familiar with opponents’ tendencies and opposing teams schemes. Jackson got his feet wet last year, and that gave him confidence. Now that he has it he’s got to learn what’s being thrown at him. It’ll take time. So be patient.”

Carlson needs to get. Are Reggie and Darnell dating?

I wish Jenni Carlson would take the advice she gave Westbrook. Although, I'm not sure she can be better.

I feel like we lost the finals mainly because the Miami role players outplayed ours.  Battier, Miller and Chalmers hit a bunch of 3's at critical times and we didn't get much from our "other" guys.  While Ibaka has gotten better and we have Martin our "other guys" have gotten worse.  As bad as Fisher was he hit some big shots and actually defended ok.  We've gotten worse at that spot.  Thabeet is not going to help there and Perkins is getting worse by the game.  I kind of feel like if we want to give ourselves a real chance we need to make another move or two down the stretch (or have one of the youngster improve a lot).  In the finals series against the Heat they had Battier have two games where he scored 17, Chalmers had one game where he scored 12 and another where he scored 25 and Mike Miller had a game where he scored 23.  Do we have any extras on our team that can give us that kind of production?   Part of that production is due the fact that Miami shares the ball so well.  They trust their teammates to the point where they can score that many points but the other part is that those guys have the ability to shoot well enough to score that many points.  Of our other guys who can score like that?  Maynor, Jackson, Thabo, Perkins, Thabeet, Collison? When is the last time any of those guys scored 15+ points in a game?  We don't have to have them be able to score a bunch of points but most of those guys have next to no offensive ability and that's the big problem.  They also added Ray Allen to their bench.

@okcjim Dfish didnt defend squat lol.    We lost because miami got hot, and brooks forgot he was a coach and didnt remember how to call timeouts or do substitutions.    I can complain about refs too but those are the main reasons.   Our guys were clearly rattled at times and brooks just let them play.

okcjim
okcjim 5pts

@Legendary_DorkFisher is not a good defender but he didn't defend that badly throughout the playoffs.  Our guys may have been rattled but all the games were close and that extra production was enough to put them over the top.

walle

I went to the game and I have no idea how we are as efficient as the stats show. Its like we don't know how to run the offense. There's a lot of finger pointing to spots and yelling. You could see Kevin and Russell's frustration as they pointed to where the screen is supposed to be. The second unit is dreadful, outside of Martin, though he was doing a lot of one-on-one. This could have all just been due to Russ struggling, but I just don't think Brooks is the right guy to take them over the hump. The offensive sets are stagnant and it has been this way during his tenure.

@walle that pointing and screaming is called communication. it used to be NON existent a few years back. i can at least thank perk for that much.   And yes sometimes Kd gets angry cause he DOESNT want a screen, he doesnt need it sometimes.

Legendary_Dork

@HookemKD the only and i mean ONLY way to defend durant is VERY PHYSICAL, you have to get away with basically murder to stop him, and the refs have to allow it.

Sustainable Parameters

Caron Butler didn't particularly defend him well but he matched him offensively a few meetings ago because he hit a bunch of corner 3s.

If any of their guys hold KD to like 32, then drop 20 themselves, it's kind of a win on their part.

HookemKD

@Westbrook gon' Westbrook so basically, the best defense is a good offense? Somehow Durant has managed to reincarnate 1970s ABA strategy... When will we be treated to the "Durant Rules?" Someone better start brainstorming because he ain't getting any worse and is basically unstoppable already.

Westbrook has played 40+ minutes 3 games in a row. Somewhat surprising that this has only happened 3-4 times in the regular season previously in his career. 4 times in a row is the previous max.

The bench

@Crow Its possible that his reckless play and sudden jump in minutes is why the team is struggling so much as Brooks search's for a back up.

 @JUNKYARDDOG

Even in the playoffs, Russ has never played more than 4 40+ minute NBA games in a row and he has only played 3 such playoff games in a row once then and once for 4 straight.

Scotty looked pretty down, pissed last night til the end but also keepin gthe faith too. Pressure on the design / system.

Durant seemded to be the PG 60% of the time last night. More than I ever recall. Probably too much compared to an ideal situation..

@Crow ANy one who has seen 'Brook play knows that  his style of play doesn't loan itself to 40+ minutes....Another issue for Scooter to ignore.

I would like to see Durant as a more of a ball handler for most games.  It would limit Westbrook's chances for doing the run up pull up.  And The less touches he has would make him more efficient.

@MisterJohnsonOKC Then we mostly are just going to have to be patient with Westbrook and see if he can limit his bad shots then.  That's the Thunder mold anyways (be Patient)

I think we should try to trade for Shawn Marion. He can play the stretch 4, be a backup for KD, and is a good rebounder. He is also not an offensive liability because he can hit floaters and has a bit of a post game. Furthermore, he can be helped to defend LeBron. What do you guys think?

@justin_mia Had to google that guy.

I'm of the opinion that the backup job is Reggie's to lose anyway.

Not sure how long his leash is, but so far I think he's given mixed results. Better than he was last year, but he's got quite a ways to go yet before he leaves no question between him and Maynor.

I think a Reggie/ Martin backcourt is very dynamic. If reggie has the defensive chops his lenght suggest it will be very good on both ends.

I like to see more set plays ran for martin through reggie.

If we were to trade Perk, I'd want to trade him for more shooters/combo 4.  Why?  I want to force small-ball lineups.  I think Ibaka is starting to show the man-defense needed to guard most of the top post-players in the league.  And having a rotation of Ibaka/Collison/Thabeet at center (and powerforward at times) is good enough for me if we have the specialists on the outside to knock down shots.

Or, if Lamb and Jones were to just not be lost, I'd be happy with that.  You know, the combo 4 and shooter...

@alvarex - Found One Perfect scenario would be to get İlyasova and Dunleavy for Perkins+assets(Toronto pick, Maynor) then trade 2nd round pick for Jermaine O'Neal.

How do we now AV is real injured and not just unhappy I play on a bad team injured? It's a real thing. Hell look at the same Cavs the yr after Bron left. Everybody was playing the injured card and sitting crazy amounts of games out.

I bet we trade for him and he becomes the picture of durability

We'd probably have to take Thompson if their hands. He's their worst contract other than Walton, who is an expirer.
