That’s 12: Durant powers OKC past Atlanta, 100-92

by Royce Young on December 19, 2012 at 9:37 pm 398 Comments

BOX SCORE

Kevin Durant. Is good.

Recap over. Thank you and goodnight.

I mean, yo ho ho ho. A season-high 41 for KD, 28 coming in the second half. Endless daggers, dunks, defense, crossovers — goodness. I want this game burned to DVD and wrapped for a Christmas gift right now.

Durant’s filthy public humiliation of Kyle Korver was the perfect bow on a ridiculous performance, but his most important play was the stand up defense on Josh Smith in the post that quickly turned into an and-1 on the other end. The Hawks were still hanging tough, down seven with six minutes to go. But in an instant, they were down 10 and had awoken the Durantula. After KD finished it, you could read his lips pretty clearly — “This is my motherf—king house!” And on Wednesday, it most certainly was.

I just love these “I got this” games from Durant. The shot over Korver was as much about a message to the Hawks that they were done than it was about the three points. It was basically saying, “You see this? I can do this. How are you going to beat us when I can do this any time I want?”

For a good portion though, it didn’t appear any of that would be necessary. The Thunder came out with excellent energy and appeared to be well on their way to rolling to their 12th win. They were building a steady third quarter lead, pushing it up to 17. But everything stalled out and the last six minutes of the third, as the Thunder missed a clear opportunity to slam the door shut on the Hawks. Atlanta closed the third on a 12-2 run, then opened the fourth with four more consecutive points, cutting OKC’s lead to four with 10 minutes to go. Scott Brooks had enough of that and sent Russell Westbrook and Durant back to the scorers table.

The duo then combined to score 24 of the Thunder’s 27 fourth quarter points, with Durant doing most of the heavy lifting, and doing it in style. Later, Hawks.

The offensive explosion obviously was most eye-catching, but KD’s defense in OKC’s small lineup was nothing short of terrific. He completely locked Josh Smith down in the post and the Hawks were left with a terrible mismatch and no answer on the offensive end. Brooks deployed his small group beautifully tonight, dictating the matchups in OKC’s favor. The Hawks were visibly frustrated in the fourth, knowing that they didn’t really have answers on either end.

Atlanta shot just 38.3 percent, couldn’t get to the free throw line and didn’t convert a lot of their second chance opportunities. The Thunder dug in all over and when things got tight in the fourth, looked to Durant and Westbrook to carry them home.

The Thunder haven’t really been pushed too awful much late in games during this win streak, but this was a situation where OKC had to execute in the fourth. They had to get good possessions, take good shots and make sure they ran crisp, timely sets.

Even with OKC’s impressive record and streak, they haven’t really answered a bunch of crunchtime questions, simply because they haven’t had to. The Thunder got a little test tonight, and passed easily. Largely because No. 35 is so stupidly ridiculous at basketball.

Don’t underestimate the goodness (goodness?) of this win. The Hawks are pretty solid. And Durant and the Thunder went into their house and took the keys. The knock on OKC’s streak has been the quality of opponents, but with back-to-back wins over the Spurs and Hawks, that qualifier is running out.

NOTES:

  • Nick Collison deserves some serious dap for his work in the fourth. With the Thunder really bogged down early, he created four points entirely on his own. Once on an offensive rebound and dish to Westbrook for a dunk, another on tapping an offensive rebound to Durant for a putback. Those are the type of little plays Collison makes that just help you win.
  • If you missed it, here’s KD working Korver over.
  • Don’t forget: With KD’s 41, he also added 13 rebounds and three assists.
  • Westbrook was stellar, but obviously overshadowed. He finished with 27 and 11 assists.
  • Two stats via @ThunderStats: KD now how 10 40-point, 10-rebound games. Since 2010, nobody has more. Westbrook now has 21 career 25-point, 10-assist games. Since 2010, no other player in the league has more.
  • After going 10 straight games not turning it over more than four times, KD has turned it over a total of 14 the last three games.
  • Westbrook just can’t seem to sustain good shooting nights. He started tonight 6-of-9 and looked to be headed for a special game, percentage wise. But he cooled off big time, hitting just three of his last 12 shots to finish 9-21.
  • Kevin Martin finished with only six points tonight, all coming in the first half. But it’s not like he played poorly. He just wasn’t needed.
  • Brian Davis said he’d like to “see these two teams in a playoff series.” I don’t think he thought that one through. Unless he wants a Hawks-Thunder Finals.
  • How about Jeff Teague talking smack to Perk?
  • Hasheem Thabeet hit a contested baseline jumper. I mean, HASHEEM THABEET HIT A CONTESTED BASELINE JUMPER.
  • Westbrook busted out a little one-legged Dirk/KD fadeaway in the first half. And swished it.
  • Serge Ibaka didn’t have near the same offensive impact tonight, but he contributed 14 rebounds and three blocks.
  • Eric Maynor? Stunk it up.
  • Teague is a darn good player. That floater is money.
  • Jeremy Lamb sighting! Scott Brooks busted out Lamb for five minutes in the second quarter, his first real rotation burn since the Detroit game where he was completely lost. And Lamb looked considerably more comfortable and confident in himself. He drilled his first shot, hit a 3 and grabbed a rebound. It was just a taste, but Lamb definitely has a look about him. His time in Tulsa is serving him well.
  • A bunch of people asked me if the Thunder were showcasing Lamb for a trade. Teams don’t do that near as much as you might think. It was more about giving Lamb some time because he’s earned it with his strong play in Tulsa.
  • Westbrook’s dunk in the first quarter. Bangarang.
  • Is there anything worse in basketball when two guys on the same team go up for an uncontested rebound and end up knocking it out of bounds? That needs to start counting as a turnover.
  • Brian Davis Line of the Night: “Sefolosha could have a sandwich out there and he pays it off.”

Next up: At Minnesota on Thursday.

Hollinger's power rankings are useless. The Thunder beat a top-8 team on the road and fell below the team they just beat who last lost against a worse team on the road. Didn't @crow have a better system?

Anyone else see the TNT talk on the All-Star game last night?  They were talking about who deserves to be in and they got to the power forwards/centers and said David Lee would probably be out.  Then Kenny said the Thunder deserve 3 because of how well they were playing like it was a given.  Said Serge, KD and Russ like it wasn't even up for debate and none of the others on the panel disagreed.  They said Howard didn't deserve to go if the Lakers have a losing record.

okcjim
okcjim 5pts

I think even though Serge's numbers aren't as good they don't have to be for people to consider him.  The people outside the Thunder circle see Serge as the defensive backbone for the Thunder (the leagues best team) even though is man defense is still not great (although it is improving) and they know his stats would be better all around if he didn't play with Russ and KD.

Almost 7:30AM and my TSN computer is still smouldering. I'm still spent. My adrenaline still flowing. I can't sleep. I feel the KD pink Peruvian still gushing in my veins.

You knew, you just knew when KD gave Josh Smith that dismissive go to hell, suck my d--k grin late in the  first half...this sort of thing was probably in the offing. Sort of a Superman Alert on the Dopler Radar.

No knock whatsoever on Russell Westbrook, but this is why KD is Butch Cassidy and why Russ is the Sundance Kid.

I can't decide if this second half or the Game 5 virtuoso clamp down on the Denver Nuggets two years ago were the ultimate in KD's already storied career.

Kind of like deciding if Michael Buble sounded better singing a Ray Charles classic or one by Tony Bennett.

Hard to decide.

How spoiled am I as a Thunder fan?

This spoiled...part of me wishes we could skip right past tonight and what portends as an ESPN Instant Classic against the Timberwolves and go knock on LeBron's door Christmas morning. Part of me wants to fly KD straight to Miami, look up Mario Chalmers for a little chest thumping and finger swagging, as foreplay for a suck my d--k KD grinfest.

But the other part of me, the selfish, spoiled part of me....knows what could be lurking in Minnesota tonight with a twelve game winning streak on the line.

How much fun is it being an OKC Thunder fan?

Amazingly fun.

@ThunderChick2010 Not that much on the edge. Nary an F-Bomb to be seen. I'm seriously working on that. I thought Royce's intro and recap as a whole were excellent.

"Kevin Durant. Is good."

I like when a writer takes a chance and does something a little unconventional. It grabs your attention and sets the tone. Nothing wrong with a one word sentence or paragraph either. I just hope Jenni Carlson wasn't watching when KD said, "This is my motherf---ing house."   Know what I mean?

@MaynorVCU Maynor was great at VCU but he's lost some athleticism with the knee injury. Examples of him stinking it up last night: getting chased down and blocked on a breakaway, not being able to stay in front of anybody on defense, and throwing some lazy passes.

There's no grading on the curve. If he's still recovering from surgery maybe he shouldn't be playing. Maybe some rest would help his recovery process?

ThunderWins

@DXL  @MaynorVCU I think the only reason is playing right now is the Thunder feel like they have to give him a chance because of his injury as this is his contract year.   He knows he's not likely to be resigned for much (we have Reggie and Lamb waiting) here.  I think we intend trade him to place where he could flourish (for mutual self interest) but he's not playing well enough to generate enough general interest in the league.

OkcBaby

@ThunderWins  @DXL  @MaynorVCU I think the only reason he is playing is because he is our best back up PG.  *fixed

@MaynorVCU you're obviously a biased fan of his but he has been downright awful this year. To the point where I'd rather see Reggie Jackson out there, and he's horrible.

@OkcBaby  @okcjim  @MaynorVCU Except that Reggie has way more upside, isn't coming off a major knee injury and will probably still be with the team next season after Maynor takes a payday somewhere else. I love Maynor and the dedication and effort he has shown to this team. However, as the Harden situation showed, the NBA is a business and I think the writing is on the wall.

OK, Hollinger rankings are now officially bunk.  Thunder defeat the 10th ranked team on his list on the road.

Spurs don't play, Clips defeat the 25th ranked team at home.   Thunder  DROP in rating and ranking. Spurs go up in both....

i almost forgot that the hawks were 4th in defense in the nba.  And dear god that atlanta DJ was ANNNNNNOOOOYING.   *whomever* FOR THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~  lol

The refs kinda sucked this game, for both ends too.  They just seemed to shrug sometimes like hey what? shit happens?  you got fouled, so what.  Then they would give some bs touch foul on an AND 1  and im like  *FACE DESK*

Overall, tonight showed why KD is a bad bad bad man, and skip bayless has to be rocking back and forth like MY PRECIOUS!!!!!! SEE YOU CAN PUT UP 40 A NIGHT...if it wasnt for that dreaded, WUSSLE RESTBROOK!!!!!!!!!!

Also...wow with the decision to play lamb and thabeet.  Thabeet had a quiet 6 points and that baseline jumper made me question reality. I KNOW he can hit them, but it was just so random and strange, plus LAMB just walked out too so my mind was processing things like LSDLSJ:GOIUETONCNVB*UT$*  WHAT!

Also not gonna lie, whenever i saw lamb walking to the scorers table to  sign in i thought to myself, man that towel boy sure does have some curly lamb like hair *shrug* OH WELL..took me until i saw him ON THE COURT for my brain to HADOKEN that realization into my skull.

Oh and i did some digging around, i know some people whom know some people, and it turns out...*SHOCKER* that Kevin durant  DOES INDEED OWN the hawks arena :P  thus..making it HIS F$#$ING house lololololololol.
