Saturday Morning Cartoons: Behind the 52

by Royce Young on January 26, 2013 at 10:28 am 564 Comments

Happy Saturday. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. Shine on.

It was more than a week ago, but KD’s career-high 52 was pretty special. And via Hip-Hop Nonstop, here’s a fun behind-the-scenes look at it.

Bonus cartoon after the jump:

The OKC Chamber of Commerce put this video out yesterday and as a lifelong Oklahoman, it’s pretty terrific. There’s just something special about this place.

For the poster asking below, I would say the great things about OKC (or surrounding suburbs such as Yukon, Edmond, Mustang, etc.) are low cost of living, easy access to everything as long as you don't mind driving because everything is connected to either I-40, I-44, or I-35, there are a lot of family entertainment options and most of them are cheap (Zoo passes, Omni-plex, Frontier City and White Water), a lot of the parks are nice, especially in Edmond, the state does have TONS of lakes, and the city is always getting more and more arts stuff and great restaurants and businesses every year (like SunFlower Market, Half-priced book, or pretty much everything in Edmond where the players live). The construction is super annoying, but it should end eventually, and you do have to drive everywhere. There are no subway system or El-train like in Chicago and the busses are just so-so. Also, you have to deal with tornados a lot. In case you're politically or religiously liberal many people are uber Republicans or evangelical Christians (though not as much for the younger generation) or at least, the media seems to assume that most people are. Not saying that's good or bad. Just throwing it out there. I lived in OKC most my life (thus I'm NOT kennygee people!) and moved back there after I got my masters while we had our two boys to be close to family (also so my wife could have a VBAC, midwife, and cloth diaper. There's actually a very "granola/earthy" sub-movement going on in OKC). I would still live there now if it wasn't for getting accepted into FSU. Now I live in the retirement capital of the world. Go old people!

I believe i said if there was a muslim prayer i would leave.  I don't believe that was me saying they couldn't have it.  If i don't agree with it i don't have to sit there and sit through it.  But that option is available to everyone now.  And you are right i wasn't looking for any pity.  But please tell me why i should have to give up something i enjoy just because someone else doesn't like it?  I didn't ask them to have the prayer before the game, but why should i hvae some sort of problem with it that they do?

If you have 10 people and 9 of those people want something, why should they have to miss out just because the other one doesn't want it?  That is plain and simple ridiculous.  And to say it isn't is selfish.  To say that i as a white christian man am afforded liberties that "minorities" are not is racist.  I don't get any special treatment because i am white or christian or a man, and it is demeaning to everyone to insinuate that i do.

You said majorities can be wrong, and that is true they can be.  But we aren't talking about some sort of injustice towards people here.  We aren't talking about segregation where just because you were black you were not allowed the same things as white people.  A prayer before a game where the main thing requested is safety for the players isn't an injustice to anyone.  And to say that it is is being close minded.

@SexyWatt  see now, this is where its gets ehhhhh, you've been part of a privileged majority all of your life. it wouldnt make sense for you to think of any minority interest because they arent youre own.that whole as a christian deal isnt gonna get you any pity(not that youre looking for it) from anyone, because everythinggg goes christians way, which is why its being taken up as the issue. you were quick to walk away from muslim prayer, but then have a problem when people dont wanna deal w the christian prayer. loool this is the thinking that get people upset w christians. all this majority talk is more inconsiderate to me than any prayer or national anthem. smh, like majorities cant be wrong.

@SexyWatt  @Lost Ones  @MJOKC  @O O O O O O What are you "giving up" though? So do you complain when you go to any other game in the country and there isn't a public prayer first? Again, is God only available 5 minutes before the Thunder game, and if said prayer is being lead by a local OKC pastor? Seems like if you needed to talk to him just right now, you could just do so yourself and that would be more sincere anyways.

The point is that the owners aren't here to appease you.  They can run the team how they want.  That should be clear by the fact that they don't make all the player decisions that you all want.

As a Christian i find all of what you guys are saying to be pretty offensive.  I haven't set out or said anything to be offensive in this conversation, but i believe that you are going out of you way to belittle my beliefs.  Its really simple.  If you don't want to pray before the game then don't participate in it.  But why should the majority of the people have to give up something they enjoy to placate you?  I mean thats how it is in the world today.  The majority have to give up things they love to make the minority of people happy.  That seems to just be ridiculous to me.

I think their are probably people who don't agree with me on everything that will not be going to hell.  But i honestly believe people who are not Christians will be going to Hell.  That isn't me telling you what to do.  It is your decision.  I am not judging you or your decisions, so i'm not real sure why you think you need to judge what i believe.

As a christian i think its important to stand up for what you believe.  I'm not in here preaching at you all.  But i do find it offensive to be bashing on the religious people because they find prayer to be important.

@Old Man Game  @SexyWatt Yeah I probably shouldn't have brought up the religion thing. ONe of the weirdest prayers I ever heard was when a guy read a passage from Job about "thunder" (either Job 26:14 or 36:33) that had nothing to do with what that passage is about and then turned into a message about how our team with the help of God can defeat theirs. Most of the time, however, the prayers are just for prayer safety.

i think its funny that all these 'other religions' should be appeased but appeasing the Christians is a problem.  It happens all over this country.  The owners have the right to do what they want.  If they want a prayer before the game and the NBA allows it then they can have it.  If you don't like it you don't have to support the team.  It's that simple really.

@Lost Ones  @SexyWatt  @1 Knee 4 Points 5 Rebounds 35 Million Dollars People forget there are other denominations in OKC. I worked at Target in Yukon a few Christmases ago because we needed some extra money, and we had a couple come in looking for Hanukkah stuff. We didn't carry any. Also, my main professor at FSU is from OKC but he is a Reform Jew. In fact, his dad was the rabbi of the Jewish temple by Penn Square mall until he passed away a few years ago. Another example: When I was in HS, the person I set by in band at Western Heights was Muslim, and everyone treated him like he was weird every time Ramadan came around. I confess back in HS I was one of those persons, unfortunately. Needless to say, what Lost Ones says is true, there are in fact many people in OKC who are not evangelical Christians. Nevertheless, I wasn't trying to stir up anything when I said that. I know for many people their religion and/or political views are important to them, so I was throwing that out there in case the guy posing below who is thinking about moving to OKC is such a person
