Thursday Bolts – 1.3.13

by Royce Young on January 3, 2013 at 11:16 am 185 Comments

BoltsLogoNewDarnell Mayberry on how bananas you should be: “I’m not saying go bananas. I’d never say do that. But the Thunder hasn’t exactly played well lately. You can say OKC is 24-7 and yada yada ya. But the fact of the matter is this team has had some extremely disturbing stretches, periods or halves. This team is good enough to win on most nights, and that’s precisely what it’s done for the most part. But believe me, what we’re watching right in no way is the identity this team wants to have. There’s too much inconsistency. Too many breakdowns. This team’s goal this season and beyond is to sustain a level of performance, against good teams and bad, and right now that just isn’t happening.”

Rob Mahoney of SI.com lists Serge Ibaka as one of his most improved: “If Kendrick Perkins is to blame for the Thunder’s overly conventional lineups with two court-clogging big men, Ibaka could rightly be credited for some of the team’s push-back solvency. If nothing else, Perkins’ very presence has forced Ibaka to stretch his game over the past few seasons, and this season we’ve begun to see the considerable payoff from that evolution.”

The Lost Ogle wants your help: “I have a theory that Kendrick Perkins gives the best hugs out of every Thunder player. (Kevin Durant makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches, Nick Collison is the best amateur ballroom dancer, and Serge Ibaka builds the best forts out of couch cushions.) I would like to test this theory. If you work for the Thunder and think that letting the players hug a blogger would be a great PR opportunity for the team, email us at thelostogle@gmail.com.”

If you thought last night’s officiating was bad, it could’ve been worse.

New Year’s resolutions for the Thunder.

The Brooklyn Game on Deron Williams: “Maybe he just needs to play Oklahoma City all the time. Just looked different tonight: he pushed the pace when it suited the offense, hit open jumpers, forced turnovers, distributed as well as he’s done all season, played solid on-ball defense on Russell Westbrook (even though Westbrook hit tough shots)… He didn’t have an undeniably explosive game statistically, but he absolutely looked like a better player than we’ve seen all year.”

Nenad Krstic in an awesomely weird Russian Papa John’s commercial.

Howard Beck of the NYT: “This was not the Nets team that lost 11 of 16 games in December or the one that was humiliated on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. This was a fluid, confident group, powering past the defending Western Conference champions, in a building where the Nets had never won, and just two days after a calamitous defeat in San Antonio.”

Part II of Zach Lowe’s midseason awards.

Tom Ziller of SB Nation: “But here’s the truth: KD is nice. An ejection and a four-letter word wouldn’t be notable otherwise. If the world noticed every time any NBA player — no, athlete — was caught cursing on camera, this website would be called F.U. Nation. (I’m going to keep that pitch in my back pocket.) This moment captured above is so utterly un-KD that it appears more an exception that proves the rule than some deeper truth about Durant’s spirit. All it shows is that KD is human. Humans get frustrated. Frustration is a gateway drug to anger. In pro sports, with the heavy air of pressure, high expectations for perfection and all the human error that is unavoidable, that anger boils over into F-bombs quite frequently. Even angels succumb once in a while.”

@BallSoHard We should sign Kenyon Martin and Delonte West have our own "edge."

okcjim
okcjim 5pts

Some free agents we could target next year at the 4 if we made Ibaka our 5.

Paul Milsap 8.6 this year

Andre Blatche 1.146

JJ Hickson 4.0

David West 10 mil.  He might be to the point where he'd play for less to win a championship.  Who knows.

Centers

Chris Kaman 8

Nikola Pekovic 4.8 this year says 6.0 for next.  I guess he's restricted.

TempBoy Brandon

@okcjim Or maybe we play KD at PF more often. Go Russ/KMart/Thabo/KD/Serge. Maybe Lamb and/or PJIII takes over main scoring duties off the bench.

@okcjim The problem is that we still have to find a way to get rid of Perk. We're not going to amnesty him.

I'd like David West though.

RumbleTime

@OBoy Jones III  @okcjim @justin_mia would be livid if we amnestied Perk now. He would point back to the Harden trade and shake his head in disbelief

 @GervinReincarnated   @OBoy Jones III  @justin_mia

If we ended up with Martin and David West instead of Harden if Perk was amnestied I would have to say that's a good deal for us.  I don't think we'll amnesty him though.

okcjim

 @OBoy Jones III

He's 32. he probably won't get as much on his next contract.  He can definitely still score.  I'm not sure he's ever been a very good defender though.

RumbleTime
RumbleTime 5pts

@okcjim Would you trade for Kaman this year and bring him off the bench to replace Hash? I don't see Dallas trading Mayo because they value him too highly, but Kaman is someone that might not cost us much to obtain

okcjim
okcjim 5pts

@GervinReincarnated We'd have to send Perk and they wouldn't want Perk.

RumbleTime
RumbleTime 5pts

@okcjim He's one of those guys with tons of talent. A few years ago he was on my fantasy team (mostly a bench player), and would have nights where he would gets tons of board and drop 20 + pts in Wash, but most nights he was too inconsistent

okcjim
okcjim 5pts

Blatche is actually kind of intriguing too.  He's looked good the times I've seen him play this year.

RumbleTime

@okcjim dang it. All my dreams are ruined because of Perk and stupid salary matching.

In light of the argument below and so it doesn't get buried, why not trade for Affalo. His annual salary is exactly what we want to pay for Martin. He brings the defense, experience, and shooting we want off the bench, and can play point at times as he does for the Magic. Seems like an excellent decision if we're not going to trade for a center or PF like Ilyasova and don't think anyone in next year's draft will be worth it

OBoy
OBoy 5pts

@GervinReincarnated  Why would Orlando want to do it? What do we do with Thabo if we got Afflalo?

RumbleTime
RumbleTime 5pts

@OBoy Jones III start Thabo still or bring him off the bench and let Afflalo start. Next year you trade Thabo if you can resign Martin or you slide Afflalo into Martin's spot

RumbleTime
RumbleTime 5pts

@OBoy Jones III okay prob not trade Thabo and resign Martin (even though it's my fav option) because Thabo's contract is super affordable and we would have to pay 8-10 mil a year to resign Martin

RumbleTime
RumbleTime 5pts

@Bryson   @OBoy Jones III You'd have to trade the Tor pic. They would do this for the draft pic and to clear up space

Bryson

@OBoy Jones III  @GervinReincarnated  Expiring contract, free up space. I've heard they like Josh Smith.

OBoy

@GervinReincarnated  Ok, but why would Orlando do it?

all these lemonade cleanses and fiber cleanses... damn that. Google Joel Marion's Fastest Fat Loss Week Ever. It isn't some starve yourself or fad diet. It does have intermittent fast days (w/ amino acids) though

Mark my words, we're gonna look back on KD's ejection last night as a major turning point in the season. I know he's pretty damn fabulous already, but I think he's about to go on some next level type tear, and runaway with the MVP. I know we like to poke fun at Nike's KD is not nice campaign, but I think what they mean is you don't want to anger him, or he's gonna drop 50 on you. I think last night may just be the catalyst for that.

Was anyone else hoping for Lamb to get a shot last night? When you are down so much, why not try a spark? He has proven that he can nail 3s cold off the bench. His defense is improving as well. I would like to see Lamb get some minutes soon.
