Tuesday Bolts – 2.5.13

by Royce Young on February 5, 2013 at 9:59 am 326 Comments

BoltsLogoNew11Bradford Doolittle of ESPN Insider: “Martin is not as good as Harden, and it’s not really close. However, he’s filled his role on the Thunder this season almost as well as Harden did for last season’s squad. Close enough, anyway, to avoid offsetting the improvements OKC has made elsewhere. Harden averaged 19.3 points per 36 minutes, and had a .660 true shooting percentage on a .216 usage rate. Martin comes pretty close: 18.2 points per 36, .617 true shooting, .209 usage. The bottom line is that Oklahoma City is outscoring opponents by 11.2 points for every 100 possessions Martin is on the court. That number for Harden last season was 9.9. The question now is whether Martin can maintain that effect in the playoffs.”

Jack Winter of Warriors World in a 5-on-5 on a made-up J.J. Redick deal: “Redick to the Thunder for Jeremy Lamb, Perry Jones III and Eric Maynor. Orlando is in full rebuilding mode but is devoid of young players with star potential. Andrew Nicholson and Moe Harkless will obviously build on solid rookie seasons, but neither has the ceiling of Lamb or Jones III. In a league where superstars reign supreme, a small-market team like the Magic needs to roll the dice when they can. The Thunder aren’t playing either rookie anyway, and Redick would be a lethal floor-spacer for Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.”

Darnell Mayberry: “KD was in obvious pain and discomfort both in the second half of Saturday’s loss at Cleveland and after the game. He looked to be in such bad shape after sustaining a right rib contusion that it didn’t seem possible he’d play tonight. After the team landed late Saturday night, Durant was taken to the hospital to get examined. The results confirmed the contusion. Durant, however, was cleared to play though still suffering through considerable discomfort.”

Kevin Pelton of ESPN Insider on Kevin Garnett’s potential destinations: “The Oklahoma City Thunder are the most intriguing destination. Upgrading from Kendrick Perkins in the middle would make the Thunder the overwhelming favorite to win the title, and Oklahoma City has enough young assets (including rookies Perry Jones III and Jeremy Lamb and the rights to Toronto’s protected first-round pick) to make a deal like this without overhauling its rotation.”

Joe Kaiser of ESPN Insider on how Westbrook can be better in transition: “Westbrook is one of the NBA’s most electrifying players and a big reason behind OKC’s success in recent seasons. Despite his poor shooting numbers this season, his player efficiency rating is still No. 11 in the league. His value to the Thunder can’t be underestimated. That isn’t to say that he’s a finished product, however, and there are several approaches he can take to make strides in the transition game. The easiest, most immediate change he can make this season as the Thunder make another run at an NBA title is to take fewer jumpers and drive to the basket more often. The end result could very well be a foul and a trip to the line. Or better yet, another poster in the making.”

Marc Stein has OKC No. 2: “OKC has always insisted outsiders make a bigger deal about Russell Westbrook’s blowups than his teammates and coaches do. Not quite sure how RW can be mad at anyone but himself given how poorly he’s shot the ball lately, but we’re taking a wait-and-see stance after this last outburst.”

John Schuhmann has OKC No. 2: “What a week for Russell Westbrook. He recovered from his road-trip shooting struggles, but threw an in-game tantrum in Thursday’s win over the Grizzlies and followed it up with a bizarre postgame interview. Then he lost a one-on-one duel to Kyrie Irving on Saturday. The Thunder are 3-4 in their last seven games, allowing a brutal 110 points per 100 possessions in the four losses.”

Jeremy Lamb was selected to the D-League All-Star team.

From Elias: “Kevin Durant scored 19 points in the Thunder’s win against the Mavericks. That ended his streak of 12 straight games with at least 20 points versus Dallas. It was the longest run of 20-point games against Mark Cuban’s club since Zach Randolph had a dozen in a row from 2006 to 2010.”

@MJOKC   I had it a couple of weeks ago.  I NEVER get sick, but it knocked me off work for a couple of days and part of my weekend.  My wife had it and missed a week of work.

He's going to be traded soon or just left to expire, but to his credit Maynor is still handling it well and being a great teammate. I saw him on the bench joking with Russ for a long time between the 3rd about that crossover move, and he seems to still have a great repoire with everyone and isn't pouting

@1 Knee 4 Points 5 Rebounds 35 Million Dollars You think there is anyway Brooks gives him one last shot at running the 2nd unit? I mean dudes got talent we've seen it. Just feel like he maybe didnt get enough time to right the ship for himself. I like Reggie but thinking of him playing the 2 while maynor at 1 seems like something that could work. Also you dont think we take Maynor in the post season for insurance? Not getting jack for him right now on the market id think

@ThunderTheFUp  @1He gave him over a third of the season. He just doesn't have it. Maybe you're right and he needs more time, but Reggie is better right now. What do you want us to do? He'll probably get offered a small contract in the offseason or certainly the chance to come into somebody's training camp or summer league and prove he's healthy enough to contribute. All that best backup in the league, and the Thunder should trade WB, or start Maynor talk obviously is over though

@1 Knee 4 Points 5 Rebounds 35 Million Dollars @1 Oh i agree. Im actually really gald Brooks made the change i think it showed growth in SB coaching skills but i also dont think Maynor is end of the bench material ya know? I do agree RJ is better now and looks more explosive from here on out but just remembering the chemistry Maynor had with them and the way he Use to run the point was great. I'd bet Maynor comes back and has a fairly decent back up career at least i hope so.. .I also hope Reggie has a better one lol

Fred Jones and Udonis Haslem both played in the playoffs with a BROKEN finger on their shooting hand. Rondo tore his ACL and played another quarter and OT and did shootaround the next day. Ben Wallace broke his leg and finished the game, didn't find out til the next day. Dirk got 6 of his fronts knocked out before, ran to the locker room spit them out in a bag, finished the game while swallowing blood.

Dudes in the NBA are tough, everybody just doesn't like to be such drama queens about it.

thats not  an argument, that just sounds like someone hating on a great player....Kobe is one of the best players ever and one of the reasons is his ability to play through pain unlike few others have ever done before

@kennygee90  @f5alcon  @Lost Oneseverybody does. He's just a drama/attention whore. Perkins played with a torn groin and wrist that required surgery after the finals and nobody ever heard a peep.

Kobe cuts his pinky making sausages and it's damn national news and Mike Breen won't shut the hell up about ti during the game.

kennygee90

@1 Knee 4 Points 5 Rebounds 35 Million Dollars  @f5alcon  @Lost Ones ..Kobe has an extremely high pain threshold

f5alcon

Kobe doesn't IMO play through any more pain than anybody else in the league. He is just the biggest drama queen about it. He always makes sure all the media knows he has a booboo on his foot, ankle, finger, etc. that way when he has a good game, he's a hero, if not built in excuse. And when he's listed as day to day, the other team always prepares knowing Kobe is going to pull that act and he's really playing.

AIaska

@Lost Ones Yeah it's easier to shut down the scoring of a dominant center than  it is a dominant wing players. You can basically double in the post so they need to be surrounded wing players they can pass to. They also can't really create their own offense as much

Pretty sure Vic Oladipo is the best sleeper pick/prospect in a loong time,

The guy allowed 4 points from players he was gaurding vs Michigan,

He is clearly gonna be a shut-down defender in the NBA,

He has FREAK athleticism,

Made like 17 of his last 25 3pt attempts,

Will likely be a college champion,

You could argue he should be top 3 pick,

and that he is the best non-big in the draft.

The guy WILL be a big time player in the NBA,

and he can contribute NOW.

I really hope we steal him in this draft,

Victor Oladipo-Best steal of the draft...GAURANTEED!!

(also think Triche from syracuse will be a steal)
