One of the best things about the Thunder is not that they’re really good. It’s that they’re really good and really fun.
Just trying to pick 10 plays with this team is hard, because there are legitimately 25 plays that are worthy of being recognized. Russell Westbrook’s pile drives to the bucket, Kevin Durant’s majestic posters, Serge Ibaka’s volleyball spikes — when you show up at the arena to watch OKC, you know you might be in store for something jaw-dropping.
So before we move on to the Thunder’s second season, here are my top 10 from the 2012-13 regular season:
10. Spin cycle
Holy gorgeous, that was beautiful. The spin KD puts on makes him look like the Black Swan, then the finger-roll is so delicate and perfect. Though Durant’s most incredible play of the night might’ve actually been a missed dunk.
9. Perk’s YOLO follow-through
That right there, is some form. It’s just barely Perk’s best offensive play of the season, beating out him taking Kosta Koufos to school.
8. Nick Collison’s fake and dunk
Just try stopping that. TRY. All it was missing was a cartwheel.
7. Trolling Denver
What’s so great about Russell Westbrook’s move to goaltend Rocky’s halfcourt shot wasn’t just the pure evil it takes to do it. But it’s the fact that Westbrook did it genuinely to fire up his team, and himself. With the whole arena booing him to death, Westbrook hit a game-tying 3 at the end of regulation and while the Thunder ended up falling in overtime, it still cemented Russ as Enemy No. 1 in Denver.
6. KD gets fierce with Sasha
I say this was better than the one on Vince Carter because it resulted in two points. Pavlovic looks like he slipped on two banana peels.
5. Russell Westbrook passes it to his favorite teammate
“What a play! What a play! That’s SICK.”
4. Welcome back, old friend
James Harden’s first trip back to OKC didn’t go so well. He lost by 22, he went just 3-16 and he got his shot blocked like 12 times.
3. The Durant Hammer
My thought process when this dunk happened live: “…………..”
2. Block ‘em and dunk on ‘em
A play worth $25,000. Westbrook starts it with a vicious swat, and Durant finishes with a ridiculous finish. Kind of a perfect sequence to show off how explosive this duo is.
One of the most unreal plays I’ve ever seen. Period. Just incredible. Durant is laying on his back when the ball finally drops through the net. I want this video to play at my funeral. “Oh COME ON!”
