Ending the longest current tenured run in commissionering in sports, David Stern has set a date for his retirement.
Announcer by former Board of Governors chair Glen Taylor Thursday, Stern will step down as the NBA’s commissioner Feb. 1, 2014.
Stern, 70, has sat atop the NBA perch the last 28 years. The Board of Governors has unanimously approved Adam Silver as Stern’s successor. Stern began with the NBA as outside counsel in 1966 and took over for Larry O’Brien as commissioner in 1984.
Silver joined the NBA in 1993 and became deputy commissioner in 2006.

My guess is that the owners will take back a lot of the power Stern took for himself. Silver will mostly agree with them rather than the other way around.
