Exit Interviews: Scott Brooks confirms Perk was hurt

The Thunder officially wrapped the season up with their end of the season exit interviews. Players filed in to speak with reporters about their experience of playing in The Finals, to their future with the organization.

Two players didn’t speak because they were sick — Derek Fisher, and Kendrick Perkins. Perk, of course was said to have played the last three rounds with a torn groin. Something Scott Brooks confirmed Saturday.

“I’m proud of guys that never use excuses,” Brooks said. “And Perk had a partial tear. I give him a lot of credit. Most guys would’ve shut it down, but he didn’t. He fought.

“Perk played through it and we would have not been in the NBA Finals if it wasn’t for his toughness versus the Lakers and his ability to guard pick-and-rolls in the Spurs series.”

Full audio of the exit interviews after the jump.

Brooks on next season:”There’s no guarantee the next natural step is a championship. We all start next season 0-0.”

On LeBron in the Finals: “It wasn’t natural what he was doing on the court. You don’t see that often. He was at a special level that I’ve never seen before.”

On Ibaka improving, most notably his hands: “He’s definitely worked on that part of his game. It’s not like he’s Fred Biletnikoff or anything but he doesn’t have bad hands. He has hands that should and will get better.”

KEVIN DURANT

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

KD: “Russell was great this year at helping everybody out, being more vocal, controlling his emotions a little bit more and just leaving it all out there for the team. You see one of your main guys doing that you don’t have nothing to do but follow it.”

On Harden and Ibaka’s contract negotiations: “They know they’re a big part of what we do here. They know how much we value them as people first and as players. They know how much the city loves them. But we’re just going to let them do what they do. My job is to be a great teammate and a great friend to them. If they ever ask me for any kind of support, it’s always going to be there. If they ever ask me for advice, I’m always going to be there to talk to them. I’m going to let that take care of itself and hopefully it works out for the best.”

On his championship motivations: “I really wanted it for the team and the city, first off. But the thing about me after that [for] all the people that always told me I was too young, too skinny, I would never make it, I’m over-hyped. Because of stuff like that, I wanted to get there and I wanted to win it just to kind of show people I could do it and I could lead a team to a [championship]. Unfortunately, they still can talk about me in that way and throw the rings jokes out there.”

RUSSELL WESTBROOK

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Westbrook on what he takes from losing the Finals: “Just the feeling. I think all the guys know what that felt like to walk off the court and not being champions. I think that’s going to push a lot of guys. I know it’s going to push me to come back better. It’s going to push everybody else to come back better players.”

On Brooks’ contract talks: “That’s how things go. You kind of (see it) get dragged out, dragged out, and then it gets done. It wasn’t never a panic for me. I know it’s just kind of how negotiations work…That’s kind of how the lockout was, just talk, talk, talk, talk, talk until finally we come to an agreement.”

JAMES HARDEN

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Harden on his contract: “I’m just leaving it up to my agent and Sam [Presti]. They’ll do a pretty good job of working it out. I’m focused on several other things right now. But when the time is [right], they’ll figure it out and it’ll be done.”

NICK COLLISON

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Collison on what he wants to work on: “I’ve become a better shooter and I want to look to that more.”

On why he thinks he didn’t play a lot in the Finals: “We played a lot of small lineups with one big on the floor, and those two guys have played great for us this year. They’ve been really vital to what we’ve done, and coach has a lot of faith in them. He has a lot of faith in me. He’s got a lot of faith in all our guys. There’s just not a ton of minutes available to the three of us when we’re playing one at a time. That’s what we went with.”

On how Thunder fans have actually helped, outside of the noise: “The lack of negativity that we have to deal with here from outside that a lot of cities do helps us, too, especially in our growth and with young players, all players, but particularly in the last three or four years. If you’re also dealing with constant negativity from the city or you don’t feel that loyalty that everyone is on board it’s more difficult. It’s not impossible. People deal with it all the time. But I think it is an advantage for us that we’ve kind of have that unwavering support.”

NAZR MOHAMMED

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Mohammed on his future: “Of course I’d love to be back. Hoping to be back.”

Mohammed on Cole Aldrich: “If I was in his position, I’d want to get on the court. I feel that that’s the next progression. You’ve got to give him a chance and see what you’ve got.”

ERIC MAYNOR

On the contract questions with the roster: “If we really want to continue, it feels like we got something special here. I feel like if guys sacrifice to get something done then everybody will be here still.”

On what he’ll tell his agent about an extension: “I want to be here. It’s very important to me. Whatever we got to do to get it done, we need to make it happen. I enjoy being here and I want to be here longer.”

On if he wants to be a starter: “Of course I want to be a starter in this league. But at the same time, wherever I’m at I want to enjoy it while I’m playing basketball. Sometimes it’s not about that. Sometimes it’s, like I said, about that word sacrificing. That’s basically what I’m about. I just like to win and enjoy doing it.”

Now Perk says it hasnt hurting the last 2 series. I can't get it any weight. He played the way he played, period.

I didn't know Crowder had worked out for OKC. Makes me happy.

@Jooseppi as a defender he would be incredibly useful

I wonder if we trade and get Juan Howard for his "Veteran Championship Experience" Then we can roll out a lineup of Fisher / Thabo / KD / Howard / Nazr

@MisterJohnsonOKC I dont want that bum on my roster

@Lost Ones But he has veteran championship experience.  Brooks would give him at least 30 mins a game.

Not Thunder related, but I wonder If Houston is shopping those picks as part of a deal for that center they are perpetually looking for.

Tobi
Tobi 5pts

@Jooseppi They could go after P. Gasol.

Jooseppi

@Tobi I'll believe a Pau trade when it happens (and I mean really happens. Not just kind of happening then not happening).

Martin for Nene?

@Lost Ones Martin is expiring and I doubt he extends with Houston.

A player I like at No. 28 is Doron Lamb. He could replace Cook which saves some salary and could be the 3pt specialist the Thunder still need (shot 47% from college 3 for career). Could also play nicely along Westbrook.

MJOKC
MJOKC 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Tobi And maybe he'd actually be a 3 point specialist. unlike cook.

Tobi
Tobi 5pts

@MisterJohnsonOKC Right, Cook is to streaky and sometimes has a bad shot selection. I could see Lamb in a Fisher role, just as a better defender and shooter.

Tobi
Tobi 5pts

@Lost Ones  @MisterJohnsonOKC  That's probably what Brooks tells him to do.

@Tobi  @MisterJohnsonOKC The reality of the "Fisher role" is going to haunt me for years.

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@Tobi  @MisterJohnsonOKC bad shot selection? cook has terrible shot selection he'll let a 3 go up with a 3 defender in his face just to rush the shot.

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@Tobi I forgot all about lamb, watch out for the bulls though they need a 2guard as well

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@Tobi Hadn't thought of him. Probably a reach at 28 but available in the top of the second, I imagine.

Tobi

@Jooseppi Yes, most boards have him early second, similar to John Jenkins.

call me crazy but if the bobcats gave up a good player with the #2 pick  ill take it and draft beal my god this kid is terrific http://youtu.be/Ww9lXcfEd14

@Lost Ones If it;s true that they are looking at Harrison Barnes, Jordan might as well just move the team to Seattle already.

Lost Ones

@Jooseppi yea him too, but idk if im a fan of Robinson there isn't many lethal 2 guards around.

Jooseppi

@Lost Ones Hard to pass on Robinson there.

Lost Ones

Minnesota has only worked out one player -- White -- who could be considered for the No. 18 pick, according to the Star Tribune, which has lead to speculation that he's the choice. However, David Kahn may also try to trade out of the first round and that's why he has not brought in more first round prospects with under a week to go until the draft."

lets go for there pick moveup!

[censored]
[censored] 5pts

I wouldn't move up in the draft for anyone.  I think the cost might be prohibitive.  If anything we should move down to the beginning of the second round to avoid a guaranteed contract.  I like Royce White a whole lot but I think he goes in the teens somewhere and to get up there we're looking at unloading one of our other guys on rookie scale.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@justin_mia According to ESPN the jazz are trying to move into the first round, but i'd guess higher than the 28th pick. The late first round picks are bad value picks because they're guaranteed and the players aren't always very good.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@Lost Ones Who would you take with the 18th pick?

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

 @areayewhy  @Lost Ones White.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@Jooseppi  @Lost Ones Leonard looks good too. Him and Ibaka in the lane would make it very tough to score inside. I'm ok with OKC drafting almost any big because I think we'll need to amnesty Perkins after the 1012-1013 season.

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@areayewhy  @Lost Ones I haven't looked at Leonard a lot but if he were available at 18 and OKC traded up I think you have to take him.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@Jooseppi  @Lost Ones Moultrie would be a good pick. It'd be nice to have a big that could score.

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@areayewhy  @Lost Ones Melo is a stay away, in my opinion. Too many questions.

White, Moultrie, Harkless, Leonard and Miller... those kinds of players. I'd probably take White or Moultrie.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@Jooseppi I agree. Minnesota is stacked at point guard with Rubio, Ridnour and Barea.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

@Lost Ones  @Jooseppi Who would you take with the 18th pick? I'd take fab melo. He seems to be a taller, more athletic Perkins with better hands.

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@areayewhy He's not much of a tweener, just an undersized PF. I don't think the team would draft him unless they believed he is solid defensively enough to play some stretches as a small ball center. I don't know if he is but that's something Presti is likely looking at.

I think he'd be the best available player at 18 in any case.

As far as trading, Maynor is the most appropriate piece for a trade up of that level and Minny wouldn't be a team interested in him, I'd assume.

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@areayewhy  @Jooseppi  should be , I dont think white is worth drafting at that spot though, we could get better players.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Jooseppi You could be right about White, but I don't like tweeners. It puts so much pressure on you on the defensive end of the court.

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@areayewhy A future first if Minny doesn't like this draft, next year's second from Charlotte, cash, a player/expiring contract.

White is worth the No. 18 pick, in my opinion. During the course of the pre-draft process he's been linked as high as No. 7 to GS and seems to have a promise in the early 20s.

areayewhy
areayewhy 5pts

 @Lost Ones  @Jooseppi would 2012 1st rounder, charlotte's 2013 2nd rounder and cash be enough?

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@areayewhy  @Jooseppi trade picks, cash, probably cook or something

Lost Ones

 @Jooseppi  @areayewhy That's a reach

@Jooseppi  @Lost Ones I don't know why, but White doesn't seem worth the 18th pick. What do you think we'd have to trade to move up 10 spots?

Jooseppi
Jooseppi 5pts

@Lost Ones The speculation has been the No. 18 pick is the best bet if somebody wants to trade up to secure White. I'm not sure what we have that interests Minnesota outside of a bigger overall deal.

So i guess the backup center is all coles he did it.

[censored]

@Lost Ones I would say he is the favorite.  But there are some veterans out there who could fill the role.  I think (hope) that Nazr is done, barely played him in the playoffs.

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@justin_mia I think nazr is done, if anything he's filler status at this point and if we do resign him he's not getting the spot over cole especially in a full season.

@Jooseppi nazr is good as gone and he sounded fine with it, brooks almost has to play cole now he was a top 10-20 pick for a reason

Jooseppi

@Lost Ones I'd be shocked if the big roster situation stayed with the currently signed players. Nazr could get signed again. Free agency. Draft. I think Cole has a good shot at finally getting minutes, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he started the season as the backup center, I just believe there are a lot of potential wrenches that can be thrown into the mix.
