Grant Hill considering Thunder, Heat and Lakers?

Via David Aldridge of NBA.com:

Free agent forward Grant Hill is still considering at least two other teams–the two teams in last month’s Finals, Miami and Oklahoma City–as well as the Lakers as he decides where he’s going to play next season, according to a source with knowledge of the 39-year-old forward’s thinking.

Reports Tuesday indicated that Hill has decided either to play for the Lakers or retire. But the source strongly indicated that Hill has not limited himself to Los Angeles as he makes up his mind. The Lakers emerged as a strong favorite for Hill after they agreed to terms with the Suns last week on a sign-and-trade deal that will send Steve Nash to the Lakers after the end of the July Moratorium on the 11th for four Draft picks and $3 million. But Hill is looking at the Heat and Thunder as well.

The question is, is Hill just considering the Thunder or are the Thunder considering him back? I think that’s probably relevant.

In other words, I read this as, “Hey Lakers, up your offer or else!”

The Thunder aren’t likely to extend anything more than a one-year offer to Hill, and depending on his thinking, he probably will want at least a partially guaranteed second season. And with Oklahoma City at 14 on the roster after drafting Perry Jones III and signing Hasheem Thabeet, offering that final spot to Hill rather than a developmental player seems unlikely.

Also, where does Hill get minutes in the Thunder rotation? Obviously he seems like a natural backup for Kevin Durant, but depending on how minutes shake out, Hill might only see 10-15 a game. If that’s something he’s fine with, then it could be a fit I guess.

Last summer, I was a supporter of the Thunder taking a long look at Hill and not much has changed, except he’s a year older. The problem comes down to money, contract length and role.

And also this: Hill turns 40 in October.

Hill averaged 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 28 minutes a night last season in Phoenix.

As many already know, I love wild speculation and trade rumors. With that in mind, and the recent article about how Love is "losing patience" with the Wolves, I thought it interesting to revisit a Kevin Love trade scenario.   The Trade: James Harden, Serge Ibaka and Lazar Hayward for Kevin Love.   Why I think it works for us: James and Serge together will cost close to 10 million more per year than Love. James and Serge together do more for a team together, but Love does more individually than either. Rebounding is still a weakness, and Love single-handedly fixes that. Love is a quality shooter and scorer as well, which alleviates the pain of losing Harden. This makes us worse defensively (personnel-wise), but not so far that we can't be coached to being better. We essentially save 10 million per year over the course of the players' next contracts, keeping out of the luxury tax. We also have a more formidable Big 3 that is better balanced between the post and perimeter.   Why I think it works for Minny: Love doesn't really want to stay anyway, and Minny has more holes than it wants to let on. Rubio is a great passer and quality defender, but is still a poor scorer - they don't have much of any perimeter scoring at the moment. Harden turns that weakness into a strength, as one of the best scoring SGs in the league, and who can play well off the ball. No one besides Rubio actually defends on that team, while Ibaka loves nothing more than stuffing opponents' shots. Derrick Williams has talent, but he is a classic tweener, with few PF skills, but sub-par SF athleticism. Ibaka is an immediate upgrade. Rubio-Love-Pekovic? isn't particularly intimidating, and not likely to contend for the playoffs in the West. Rubio-Harden-Ibaka-Pekovic is a solid 4-man core that covers each other's weaknesses. Balance and fit is better.   Anyway, got that out of the way, enjoy.

Daequan was absolutely worthless after that stint where he started at 2 for us all the way through the playoffs. we really could of used another viable option at the 3 to give Kevin rest which gives reason for Presti and the organization to look at Hill.   also since we lost Fish and Mohammed we could probably use some Veteran experience and I like thought of PJ3 learning some things from him.   I think he fits almost perfectly.

I called the Grant Hill move a long time ago and got crucified on here!  We NEED a guy who plays D like he has.  And at the kind of money he's going to play for, it's going to be a no risk situation for the Thunder.  And to answer Royce's question about where does he get the minutes?  He gets them in the small ball lineup, i.e. from Fisher.  He'll be a better rebounder and defender than Maynor, Jackson or Fisher could ever dream of being...and now KD doesn't have to guard LeBrick anymore.

koolcrud
2012-07-10 16:54:51
Every other contender is using their mid level exception. If we're not willing to offer a veteran like Hill (not necessarily him, but someone like him, Landry, Jamison, Kaman, Lee, Hickson or Brand) a 1 year deal for the full MLE, there's no two ways about it, we're being cheap while the title window is open. It also probably wouldn't bode well for ownership's willingness to pay a hefty tax bill to compensate our RFAs.
FF_pickups
2012-07-10 16:56:07
@OkcBaby "Why are u comparing Hill to Fisher and Maynors rebounding?" Because, in the small ball lineup, it'll be Hill-RW-JH-KD-Big   instead of   Fisher-RW-JH-KD-Big   i.e. the only difference will be Hill in Fisher's place.  And the biggest weakness of the small ball lineup is bad rebounding and bad D.  The Hill unit is FAR superior to the Fisher or a Maynor Unit.

@OkcBaby "And KD didnt have to guard Lebron.  Sef should have"   We played KD, Sef and Harden on LeBrick in the finals and he posted all 3 up like they were his children.  Grant Hill will be much better in that role than any of those three guys.

@OBoymuzik  @koolcrud I'm not talking about a top vet though like those guys. I never expected us to go out and get a Steve Nash or a Ray Allen. But a Grant Hill or a JJ Hickson as another option off the bench seems more than reasonable. For those wondering about where the minutes would be, this team looked like it could've really used another scorer off the bench or another big body when Ibaka and Perk were getting into foul trouble during the Finals.

@justin_mia The difference in Fisher's salary was marginal. The bigger problem is that OKC doesn't have holes/guaranteed PT that other contenders have. If we sign Hill then we could stunt PJIIIs growth. We have less need than others and that's as much of a factor as anything.

"There's a few rules about summer league the years have taught. The most basic is that playing well in summer league doesn't guarantee anything when the real games start. But playing poorly in summer league is often an indication that a player is going to have a tough time making it." This is from Brian Windhorst's article (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8145752/2012-summer-league-two-players-fell-lottery-rise-up) on espn.com, and is why I am concerned about Cole looking like crap.

@FREE_COLE I expect Cole to be a competent back-up center that could handle starting center duties if needed. I don't see him as being ready for either role. When he doesn't get a moving screen, he screens well, but what else? He's a below average defender and an offensive liability (I never knew his hands were sooo bad!). I'm a little surprised that some of you all seem surprised at how poor Cole has played through two games. He's been like this since he was drafted. I watched some of his games when he played with the 66ers. He would foul out or nearly foul out in like 15 minutes. It all stems from his lack of foot speed and his tendency to reach to make up for it. Whether he can somehow learn to adapt and be effective while playing within his limitations is the question.

@Lost Ones I'd suggest watching Joey Pryz for an example of a guy who can do it.  I also think Cole can mask it some with his technical sound.  I know you think i'm just playing him up, but watch him on box outs tomorrow.  He looks for his guy and gets in to him, which will mask it on rebounds.  Also watch him step in to holes quick and what happens behind him.  Then think about how much the D ramps up when actual systems and players knowing rotations.  Say replace Temple/Almond for sef or harden. We know Sef will fill that hole a lot better than these guys.

I'd consider this, but only if we got a minor upgrade somewhere else too.    Pekovich has some impressive numbers.  How is he defensively?    Could potentially change the deal to Ibaka, Harden and Perk for Love and Pekovich.   Would probably make the cap numbers work more easily as well.

@OkcBaby That's just not typical. That's if he will even be the same. In Maynor's case, his game isn't as reliant on athleticism as much as Westbrook's or Rose, but to think he'll be 100 percent fine on opening day is a bit optimistic. Could happen. Probably won't.

just asking a question so i cango look.   opp FG% Cole's limited minute stats against scrubs are better by a little. Opponent pts per 48 1 point worse. Opp. PER 2pts worse. Opp. team scoring 2 pts worse. It is not a huge difference on  simple raw defensive stats.Cole wins his rebound battle by 1, Perk even.   actually the biggest difference is that cole with the scrubs has horrendous offense, far far worse than  the poor offense with perk.but perk plays with the stars and aldrich with the scrubs or the scrubs so that team stat doesnt mean much.

@Crow  I wonder if they do anything to try and make it fun for them. Like you know when you were in little league and the coach would promise to take everyone out for Pizza after the game?  Bryant could be like, hey guys, hustle out there and drinks are on me tonight.

Cole gives Stephenson a little shot to retaliate. Don't make Cole go Dexter Pitman on you Stephenson.

@ILikePancakes True, but Stephenson tunes up his girlfriend and therefore he has a face that someone should actually punch so hard.

@ILikePancakes Basketball-wise Reggie made Stephenson look like an all-star in this game. Then at the other end he tried to get into a scorer duel with him and completely screwed up any chance we had at flow on offense. The team looked best when the backup PG was in.

I can't believe how decent Lazar looked at times in this game. He finally got a couple shots to fall and all the sudden you start to notice the things he actually does right out there. He does seem to work his but off. Also, a pretty physical specimen at the 3 position. He looks like he could hold his ground against some PFs in the league. They should have tried him on the Mbunga guy that was backing PJ3 down at will.

@Old Man Game  If only the dude wasn't soo bad passing, scoring, or his handles on the perimeter he'd actually be pretty decent. Those though are very big skills, and thats why he's so awful.

@ElMexiThunder They said yesterday he was 2nd all time career scorer in Marquette history. When I watch him play I see a guy who's trying to prove he can score at this level. He needs to give up on that because its clear he can't. Focus on doing the little things, the dirty work type plays that help your team. That's how he'll stick around this league if he's going to.

@Old Man Game  and defense, he's actually not that bad but he could def get quicker. To many times have i seen him not being able to recover if the person he's defending gets a quick step.

@ThunderChick2010 Working on it. Would love to be our next PA Announcer at the games. I'd do that for free. Now I just have to worry about bills. I don't like bills. Maybe I just won't pay them anymore.

Finally--almost 700 comments and finally something I can sink my teeth into so to speak. It is not even close. Tamia is in a stratosphere Trina has yet to touch. I love Tamia's nose. I find her extremely provocative from a visual standpoint.   Let me put it this way. If I were standing in a line with Trina at a 7-11...I wouldn't even reglance, let alone attempt to start a conversation. Tamia would have me staring and trying to start a conversation. For this reason--Grant Hill would be a solid addition for the Thunder next season.   I was in a 7-11 in north Edmond today and this really cute black clerk was flirting with me all over the place. I should have just handed her my cell number. It's odd this Tamia - Trina conversation is on here tonight. Trina was not in this young woman's league--let alone Tamia. I worry about James from time to time in relation to his relationship with Trina. There's nothing wrong with having as much sex as possible--I just don't want to see him get hurt.   Agreed... Tamia > Trina.

@El Prez I would take multiple glances and a discrete cell phone pic/video of Trina's booty. In terms of gracefulness and class as a woman/wife, absolutely Tamia is miles ahead. She and Grant Hill were on 106 a few days ago, had to be the cutest, most genuine looking, couple I have ever seen.

@Lost Ones yeah, i'm bummed that reggie is taking so many shots.  he will barely ever see action with maynor back, and although we don't know for sure that pj3 will play significant mins or not, his odds are much higher and he needs the experience more since reggie has at least tasted it a little bit.  from watching the games, i'd think jackson was the newest edition with something to prove...

@OkcBaby well I mean Reggie dunked from far away on a drive and PJ3 is tall but plays the perimeter. And they all black. I see it

@DennisBerry Don't forget, they both need oxygen and H2O for sustenance, in addition to the fact that they both have hair .  The similarities between the 2 duos are striking.
