Kevin Martin says he wants to stay in OKC long-term

No doubt about it, Kevin Martin has fit in quite well with the Thunder. He’s replaced virtually all the production Oklahoma City lost in trading James Harden and has established himself as a legit Sixth Man of the Year candidate.

His ability to score in rhythm, on limited shots and play alongside Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant has been incredibly impressive. Especially when you consider the Thunder essentially have worked Martin in on the fly. I think that’s an incredible credit to Martin, Westbrook and Durant that they’ve had an extremely open mind to learning how to play together. There have been some rough patches, some nights where Martin’s been uninvolved, but for the most part, it’s been a very successful marriage.

I’ve said it before, but in a lot of ways, Martin appears to fit better with Westbrook and Durant than James Harden ever did. It might be somewhat coincidental, but the Thunder space the floor extremely well now and assist on a lot more baskets. OKC was one of the most isolation heavy teams in the league last season, ranking dead last in assists. This year, they’re top 11th, averaging 22.1 a game, up from 18.5 in 2011-12. (It needs to be noted that it’s not like OKC’s offense was bad last year though. The Thunder still finished third in offensive efficiency. This year, they’re first, up almost three points per 100 possessions.)

Martin’s always been one of the best pure scorers in basketball, but now it seems he getting some of the recognition he’s deserved in the past because he’s doing it on a good team. His unselfishness has impacted the team in a lot of positive ways. Martin is the kind of player that doesn’t really approach the game as you-vs-me, but as us-vs-them. I think that idea of giving up a good shot for a great shot has rubbed off on Westbrook and Durant some. Martin trusts his teammates and I think they’re trusting him back.

Anyway, the point of this post: Martin told HoopsWorld that he wants to stay with the Thunder for longer than just this season. Not really big news, because what else is going to say, but he said it, so here we are.

“Oh yeah,” Martin said when asked if wants to stay in Oklahoma City long-term. “I get that question a lot since it’s a contract year. There are going to be teams interested over the summer, but I’m so happy right now and being with these guys has given me an extra pep in my step. It’s just fun being here. It’s a great organization and great guys. I’m happy right now.”

Like Martin said, his deal is up after this season. He’s 29 and making about $12.5 million a year this season. If he truly wants to stay in OKC past this year, that number’s obviously got to come down some. And I’d expect it would because Martin is absolutely loving his time with the Thunder. A source close to him told me this is as fun as he’s ever had as a professional player. He’s done the whole alpha dog scoring thing. Martin’s mindset is to win now. He’s been in the league eight years and wants to accomplish something before his career is over.

It’s still unknown if the Thunder feel the same way though, at least enough to commit to him financially. Obviously Martin has been an exceptional addition and replacement for Harden. His importance is clear, as evidenced by the struggles OKC’s bench had against the Wolves on Thursday. But the Thunder still have future financial concerns. Per Sham Sports, OKC has about $67 million on the books already for next season, and $66 million for the season after that.

While the Thunder proved in the Harden negotiations they were willing to break into tax territory, the question is if they were just willing to make that exception for Harden. Getting Martin for something in the two-year, $17 million range sounds reasonable to me, but that would put OKC right on the tax fringe.

I think a lot of this will be determined by how Martin performs for OKC in the postseason. And some of it will be determined what happens with that Toronto pick OKC owns, as well as Jeremy Lamb’s development. There’s also the option of letting Martin walk after the season and using that money to target another free agent guard like say, J.J. Redick or O.J. Mayo or Nick Young (just kidding) or even Manu Ginobili.

Point is, there are options for OKC and while the team is thrilled with Martin, it’s no lock. There’s a lot of time and a lot of big games to go. Right now, for both Martin and the Thunder, the focus is on this season and this season only. Because things could be vastly changed in the offseason depending on how things play out. No real reason to get too far ahead of ourselves yet.

Will Martin play vs. Heat?

TaoMaas

@Sigmund   I don't think he was hurt that bad.  Probably just bumped knees and got a deep bruise.  Makes sense to save him for the Heat game.  If I were betting, I'd have bet he would be needed more against the Heat than against a T-Wolves team who were just now getting some of their primary players back.

ok. i dont know if its just me *and i say that cause i cant see past a few comments cause my comp freezes*  but this new DT server or something is terrible.  It has to load EVERY single comment and it takes forever. plus if i dont scroll down fast enough to catch the comments , it says page unresponsive and i have to kill it.  quite frankly  i hate it :(  .    I know its not my comp or a virus or anything.  Mayne its livefyre being super lame. but it just feel..slower..different.

@Legendary_Dork Yes. Every single time you reload the page it takes all the comments back to zero and then reloads them such that the little bubble pops saying "200 new comments" or whatever. I don't remember it ever doing this in the past.

Mine is doing the same thing.  It has happened for me before--during game threads or times when I've thought livefyre to be glitchy.  It seems that comments and likes aren't showing automatically some of the time, but when you refresh or reload the page, you've gotta wait a minute or two for everything to show up.  Everything you'd previously marked as read then shows up as unread again.

Reggie can light it up against D leaguers all he wants....until he does something in an NBA game, he's still just a young scrub. But at this point, Maynor isn't much better.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts

@BlueLightSpecial You watch how he plays in Tulsa. He's the alpha dog on the floor, he attacks the paint more, doesn't worry about running a regimented offense as much. He's a guy that needs freedom to be himself out there.  That's what he has in his appearances in Tulsa, that's what he had at Boston College. To this point, that is not what he has in the NBA. He's either asked to running the offense and pass to other guys or he's asked to go stand in the corner waiting to take a 3 off a kick out. Those aren't things he's good at which is part of the problem here.

@BlueLightSpecial umm......you say this like hes playing every game with russ and kd for like 30 mins.  this is all on brooks to TRUST this young man. same with lamb

im tryna figure out why we cant have perkins setting screens for westbrook while durant is doing his playmaker thing. gotta believe that a simple pass to a cutting westbrook is more effective than trying to thread the needle to kendrick perkins.. is brooks asking durant to improvise instead of running sets for him or what??

Hey here's a question for you, what does E Maynor put up as far as stats if he were to spend a few nights in the D-League?

Stringer Bell

Just watched the Tulsa game. Reggie has it, just needs confidence. Still not convinced he's a distributor, but that kid can score. Not happy with Perry so far, but our future looks good with reggie and Lamb coming off the bench. Future is very bright.

El Prez
El Prez 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Stringer Bell Perry really never learned how to play basketball with Scott Drew at Baylor. This is what we saw from Perry Jones in college. It's like he's almost dyslexic as far as reading plays in the offensive zone. He doesn't seem to have any feel for his own game. Again.. again, another example of a player who really didn't learn his craft at the college level and moving upwards when not really ready. I hope the kid at O State, Nash, doesn't make this same mistake and go pro after his sophomore season. He'd be lost in the NBA game. Marcus Smart won't be lost at the NBA level, but Nash is too small to play the 4 in the pros and doesn't have the skill set to play the 3. Look at the three kids from OU who foolishly decided to go pro early....Willie Warren. TMG and Tiny Gallon. Where are they now? Some of these kids basically need to stay in school and hone their games more before they go pro.

I agree, Reggie will get there, eventually. So will Lamb. But confidence is such a precious commodity with any athlete ay any level. I think they'll both get there with time.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Stringer Bell I'm with you. I think we shouldn't ask him to be Maynor and just distribute and shoot the occasional three or runner. He needs to attack. That's when he looks his worst, when he's trying to set up the play and begins overthinking it.

Couldn't regain control of the movie screening room to ever get Pulp Fiction going on Night 2 of the EPQTFF. Will have to double with Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds tomorrow to get festival back on track. Is there currently a worse actress in Hollywood than Jennifer Lopez? Possibly...Kate Hudson---but I'm going to sleep on it My life has no direction without Thunder games.

I don't know if it's so much dysfunction as just people being real.  You said yourself that Sideways was more of a relationship movie and I think that might be why I preferred it.  Also, I really identified with the Paul Giamatti character--aside from the heavy drinking and depression.  In Bottle Shock, the father/son relationship was probably the most intriguing.  The pretty blonde was kind of just for decoration in this one.

El Prez
El Prez 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ThunderChick2010 I think I'm close to figuring you out. You liked Sideways more because of the rampant human dysfunction. You love movies with massive dysfunction....Little Miss Sunshine, Young Adult, Sideways, Juno, Carnage, Silver Linings Playbook, etc. Clarice...can you hear the lambs?
