LeBron and KD are working out together again

by Royce Young on September 11, 2012 at 1:14 am 61 Comments

Garrett Ellwood/NBAE/Getty Images

For LeBron and KD, their 2012 seasons began and ended together. It started while the league was still locked out as the two teamed up for a one week workout marathon in Akron they dubbed “hell week.”

And of course, it ended with LeBron raising a banner for the Heat and Durant left to hang his head.

So they’re back at it again. Via Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, LeBron and KD are back working out together for a little pre-training camp training.

Now, I know. It’s a little… icky. But it is what it is: LeBron and KD are buds. But they’re also good for each other. They drive one another, they push, they motivate. Last season’s work week helped both guys reach another level. Of course they want to beat each other. But that’s on the basketball court (or flag football field).

If it makes them better, then awesome. Because a better KD and a better LeBron is good for everyone. And iron sharpens iron, so with those two guys working out, their iron is going to be pretty darn sharp.

Plus, I have no problem whatsoever with KD and LeBron being off-the-court pals. Just because they like each other doesn’t mean they can’t still be rivals. Doesn’t mean they don’t want to beat the other’s brains out. No, Larry and Magic wouldn’t have lifted weights together. No, MJ wouldn’t have helped out his competition. But that was a different time, and those were different players. There’s this weird idealistic view that players have to hate one another to want to beat one another. Obviously inaccurate.

It’s more about being as good as you can possibly be. And clearly, both LeBron and Durant feel like they’re good for each other. It’s probably the type of thing where if LeBron does 245 sit-ups, KD’s going to do everything he can to do 246. Competitive motivation is a powerful weapon.

In the end you have to see if your best can beat the other guy’s best and that’s the bottom line. LeBron’s going to be working out somewhere, so why not have a watchful eye on him. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, you know?

It's like Goku and Vegeta training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, continuing to increase their power levels.

LBJ finally went Super Saiyan in the Finals to win his first 'ship. KD is determined to surpass that, and will go SS level 2 before the season's over.

two thunder tweets via @hpbasketball

Reggie Jackson, Thabeet, PJ3, and Hollis Thompson, and PERK (!) are visiting an OKC middle school, will take the kids through drills.

Also PJ3 and Thabeet are taking kids on the Rolling Thunder Book Bus. The kids get to pick out a free book, which is really awesome.

@ou_sas My mother drilled it into me that if I can't find anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

And while I don't make a habit of it, I think just for this once, I should probably listen to her.

I'll preface by saying I desperately want Harden to stay.

However, in the event that we end up trading him for a draft pick, the timing blows. 2013 draft is nothing special, 2014 draft is where it's at in terms of prospects.

@dancassidy35/FreeFezzyFel from GSW!!! I don't really agree with that. There are a few freshmen that are as highly regarded or even moreso than Anthony Davis a year ago, along with a strong class of returning players and what looks to be a much deeper and better international contingent.

Since we are now pairing up KD and Lebron as workout buddies. Now we need to pair up some other Thunder players.

1. KD with Lebron

2. Ibaka with Hakeem Olajuwon

3. Perkins with Dwight Howard.

4 Harden with Lil Wayne.

5. Westbrook with Chuck Norris.

6. N. Collison with ?

ou_sas

@f5alcon  @tydude I have very minimal knowledge of the Sonics organization pre-Bennett, so it was an open question. I was just wondering in general whether or not Bennett was the latest in a long line of fan abuses or if they'd had really good ownership until he showed up. It sounds like it's kind of a mixed bag.

I kind of like the idea of KD working out against/with Lebron from this angle: There's only one person in the league who you're worried about, and now you're getting important data on him. Moreover, you're now practicing against him (and if you mean to tell me they don't play pick-up against one another, you're deluding yourself). You want KD to get used to guarding Lebron? The best way is for him to spend a week here actually guarding Lebron every possession and figuring some of his tricks out. KD absorbs things from the games of people who beat him on the big stage. (e.g., Dirk's one legged fadeaway)... let's see what he takes from Lebron.

Kevin Durant's biggest mistake was making best friends with Prince James, the most mentally weak super star, maybe, of all time.  It allowed the artist formerly known as the Ringless King to play in a comfort zone.  And I will grant you that LeBron did average 28 and 10 in the NBA finals, but may I remind you that during the first 9 minutes of the fourth quarter of game 1 of the NBA finals, he was 1-6 from the field.  The demons...had come home...to roost.  But at the end of the day, Kevin Durant, who is my favorite player in the NBA even though he said that I was the guy who didn't know a thing about basketball, cost himself by playing sleepover with his new bff, LeBron James.

I have no problem with KD and Lebron working out together.  All I want is for them to take turns coming to the other's home turf.  I'd like Lebron to get a better feel for what the Thunder have here in OKC.  Let him see more of the city...play video games with the rest of the gang...just hang out.  Money is money wherever you go...but just as OKC can't match the glitz and glamor of bigger cities, those bigger cities can't offer the sense of family that the Thunder have here.  With enough money, you can party wherever and however you like, but where do you fly to if you want to find "home"?  Eh...I keep getting a feeling that Lebron might consider joining the Thunder when his contract is up in Miami...and it won't have anything to do with money.
