Multiple people shot after Game 5

by Royce Young on May 22, 2012 at 1:58 am 13 Comments

Following Game 5 there was a shooting in Bricktown near the Harkins Theater. Here are the details via The Oklahoman:

Multiple people were shot downtown shortly after the Thunder game let out Monday night, police said. About 11:35 p.m., shots were reportedly fired on Reno Avenue between Mickey Mantle Drive and Joe Carter Avenue.

Two suspected shooters are in custody at the Bricktown Harkins Theater, Oklahoma City police Capt. Lisa Camacho said.

News 9 has this:

Thousands of fans were leaving the game walking to their cars when witnesses say six shots rang out and two people were shot. One man and one woman were hit, but their conditions are not known at this time.

There were an estimated 10,000 people outside the arena Monday watching the game in Thunder Alley. It’s a question now as to if Thunder Alley will continue after this incident.

More details when available.

i actually heard someone say at work that "this has never happened after an OU football game"... wow. no, someone just blew himself up. point is... it's just the world we live in. shitty stuff happens and will happen regardless of what's going

@kec_okc To be fair, someone tried blowing himself up AT an OU football game, and when they wouldn't let him in the stadium to do so, he blew himself up DURING the game on the South Oval (when nobody else was around, thank goodness).  At any rate, it had even less to do with post-game celebrations than last night's shootings did (though it had the potential to have quite disastrously involved the game itself).

“It’s unfortunate that it happened on a great night for Oklahoma City and the Thunder, but in our society those things happen,” Oklahoma City Thunder spokesman Dan Mahoney said.

“It did not happen at the arena, at the game, at Thunder Alley,” Mahoney said.

“We’ll continue to work with law enforcement to provide a safe environment,” he said.

I don't understand people sometimes. It just doesn't make any sense.

 @Old Man Game

There was just a tremendous, emotional crowd and it's sad that the actions of a couple of people (among 30K) could detract from the team's and city's moment in the spotlight.  On the bright side, however, didn't Darnell claim a few months ago that OKC wasn't "hood enough" to ever host an All-Star weekend?  (tongue in cheek . . . I know there's no bright side to people getting hurt.)

@ThunderChick2010  I surprised Darnell didn't catch a lot of flack for that article.  Or maybe he did and I never heard about it.  But, it was a good article.

He caught a little heat on dt.  Lots of sarcastic comments about how our fair hamlet wouldn't know what to do with "smoke", wild women, dancing, etc.

Maybe now people will see OKC as a big city.

Truth is, $#)t happens everywhere. Tonight, it happened to be in OKC. It happened close to the stadium. But this could have happened in any city. Happens all...the....time....

Sad. Truth.
