@FREE_COLE Yeah OK buddy, what ever makes you sleep better at night. So I guess KD barely grazing Lebron / Wade were fouls, but when Lebron tackled KD and held his leg down that wasn't a foul? The fact of the matter is the refs allowed one team to play as rough as they wanted and penalized the other team for doing so. Once again, if it makes you feel better to say "oh, the refs couldn't have possibly been wrong" that's fine.

2012-07-06 21:46:40
@MisterJohnsonOKC They didn't win because of the refs, take off your tinfoil hat. And outside of that, what did they do that was cheating? So does that mean if we were to go out and trade for Dwight that to would be considered cheating? Since we're adding an all-star to a team which already has two all-stars...
Lost Ones
2012-07-06 21:46:21

@Daniel OBoymuzik  @FREE_COLE its harder for our guys to execute going against a top 5 defense that's why you need additional players like vets.
MisterJohnsonOKC
2012-07-06 21:45:02
@dollarbillrussell Not sure how stating facts is "less intelligent". The fact is that three all stars joined together on the same team, won a championship last season with help from the refs. And now have recruited the best 3 point shooter in the NBA.

@FREE_COLE  @Lost Ones harden has to improve his off the ball defense...but i'm talking about his scoring...do you expect him to score more if we get to the finals this year?    why should we panic and sign a bunch of vets if our guys just need to execute better

@MisterJohnsonOKC While I dislike the Heat team as much as anyone, suggesting that they are cheaters and pussies (whatever that even means in this context) isn't real intelligent. As FREE_COLE said, the Heat beat us because their star players played better and Brooks was out coached.

@FREE_COLE  @Daniel OBoymuzik  has more to do with his defensive intensity and lack of focus, i have no faith in harden on defense. he has way to many mental lapses alot of 3s we get scored on from is from his lack of focus.

FREE_COLE
2012-07-06 21:34:57
@Lost Ones  @Daniel OBoymuzik Ray is gonna shoot beyond what he showed last year, despite coming off a surgery? At some point, people either start decreasing or stay at their average, which would still be below what Battier shot. He'll also get less shots because he'll be playing less minutes because his defense isn't as good as Battier.

2012-07-06 21:33:35
Undoubtedly the heat were the better team. I don't think anyone expected the celtics to give them such a run, but I guess my point was, the celtics are still a good team, and I would think ray allen would have had more faith in that team. It's not like he was on the knicks. Should all the teams in the east just crown the heat as the de facto champions?    At the end of the day, I don't know ray allen and I don't know the whole story. Maybe he just felt he no longer had a big enough role with the celtics. It's just cruel that it had to be the heat. Simply as a fan of the game, I don't think it's crossing the line to express disappointment to his decision, but I understand your point that it may all be very unwarranted. We project onto these athletes an expectation of things like loyalty, like they owe something to us, when in reality they owe us nothing. These players can be traded like cattle, so when they do have the power to choose, why should they have to face our judgment?     There may be a double standard in the media, but the nash signing drew the same reaction from me. Teams like the lakers and the heat, they just want to take everything and people seem more than willing to give it to them. Maybe the distinction between building a team organically vs. buying a team is a false one. Maybe it's all just one giant business and the winner takes all. With this crazy free agency so far, the outlier that is this  "thunder model" is going to be put to the test.
Daniel OBoymuzik
2012-07-06 21:32:52
@Lost Ones  @FREE_COLE if we're in the finals next year do you think James Harden plays better?
FREE_COLE
2012-07-06 21:33:31
@MisterJohnsonOKC How did they cheat? The refs? No, blaming refs is a foolish excuse.  We played worse.  Lebron almost averaged a triple double.  They beat us plain and simple.    And you know what is ultimately worse for his legacy? Staying on the celtics, constantly losing to the heat.  This way he at least is giving himself a chance to win a ring.  Players with two rings are definitely considered on a higher tier than 1 ring
FREE_COLE
2012-07-06 21:32:18

@supreme35  @Daniel OBoymuzik  @candycanelane Yes I have, with my college.  Have you been a part of a professional team? This isn't a school team, or a local group of friends.  This is a team where your continued play is determined by people above you.  Ray Allen was almost traded to Memphis at the deadline.  He didn't enjoy playing around Rondo anymore.  It would be downright stupid to continue playing for the celtics in a situation that wasn't making him happy.  Loyalty is awesome.  But it's unfair of us to expect it from them, and villifying them for doing what is best for them is the height of hypocrisy in sports.

Q: Who has the best point guard in L.A. right now? The Clippers or Lakers?“I love Chris Paul. I think he’s, if not the best, top two point guards in the game. Now with Russell and Derrick Rose, they’re like super guards. I’m not sure you can categorize them as point guards. There was a time when I could have made an argument for myself as the best point guard in the game, but I can leave that to some of the other guys now. I still know I can do it at an extremely high level, and I’m still extremely competitive. Let’s hope the Lakers are the best team in L.A., and I won’t worry about who is the best point guard in L.A.”     this guy steve nash

@neo12 neither, id like to see him more in the mold of lamarcus aldridge. More athletic, better ball handling LMA. but depending on who's on the court with him, something fluid between the 3 and 4. he's a decent passer, and good passer in transition, so what i'd really like to see is a LMA X lamar odom hybrid. @Bryson That's what I'm saying. KG didn't choose to not retire just to play some regular season ball.. he has every intention of getting a Championship. Allen choosing a rival where his going to get a lot less just so he has another easier chance to get a ring is a slap in the face to the two guys he chose to join forces and won a ring with and also the organization who gave him the chance. I'd understand if it was a player who didn't have that opportunity before but he has. If Lebron continued to try to join forces with different players after his decision to be a big 3 in Miami people would be questioning his legacy but Allen gets a pass.

Hey, since it's a slow day, and there's not likely to be any contract news coming out in the next little bit, let me pose this question to you, since I never heard it talked about. What do you guys think of this scheduling idea: Instead of the current scheduling format (home-and-home v. non-conference, 3-4 games v. all conference foes), what if we played something like this: home-and-home v. non-conference, 3 games v. non-division conference foes (alternating who has homecourt advantage by year), and 5-6 games v. division foes. Would make for tighter rivalries in the division. The breakdown on number of games would be 30 non-conference, 30 non-division, and 22 division games.   Thoughts?

@ou_sas i think there's already enough of a problem with the eastern conference being weaker than the west..wouldn't this just give good teams in bad divisions a big advantage?   kind of like the NFL i know their are a few weak divisions where teams get into the playoffs with 500 records

It's a slap in the face to the celtics on two fronts: (1) he's leaving the team that gave him a ring for their arch-enemy and (2) he doesn't think the celtics have what it takes, when they were 1 game away from making the finals, with half their players injured. With the celts reloaded and a chance at a healthy roster, he'd rather turn down the better deal to lie in bed with the enemies.    This isn't even a business decision; this is your good ole knife in the back.

@MisterJohnsonOKC I did watch. Your biased analysis isn't proof.  We had 2 games where he had more FTs.  They had 2, and game 4 doesn't count because of an inflated foul count at the end of games.  I'm not saying they weren't wrong on calls.  But saying we weren't favored so long as Perk plays is the dumbest thing a person can say.  Perkins and Nick foul on every screen.  It's subtle but they are fouls.  Continue thinking the team got screwed if you want but there is literally zero impartial evidence
dollarbillrussell
2012-07-06 21:51:40
@MisterJohnsonOKC And while I will admit there were some questionable calls in the finals, that's how the finals always are. However, EVEN IF somehow you could say they won because of the refs, it's not as if Pat Riley contacted David Stern and got together and instructed hum on this glorious scheme of how the refs were going to control the finals in the Heat's favor. If there ever was any type of conspiracy going on, it wouldn't be controlled by a single team, but by Stern himself. Therefore if you're gonna be mad at anyone with your conspiracy theories, then get mad at Stern. Which also brings up the question why you are even watching basketball in the first place if you believe that stuff is going on.

@thunderatom   @FREE_COLE Exactly, it's not the foul count. It's the type of fouls that were constantly called against OKC. One thing I notices is that the refs would call a BS foul against KD or someone else to give Lebron FTs, then quickly turn around and call some off the ball foul on Battier. They made sure to keep the count close. I also agree that refs aren't the reason we lost, if we actually made our FTs we would have at least made a game 6 or won in 6.

@FREE_COLE  @MisterJohnsonOKC and i could remember five instances where they werent touched or hardly touched and they ended up at the line. they got shooting fouls called in their favor while we got the off ball / on the ground stuff. its then our fault for not taking advantage of the bonus, but they werent giving us much going to the hoop anyway. we all know the numbers from russells game. 10/14 at the basket and only 3 free throw? and when it come to russ why isnt that only he get the high impact fouls called and lebron gets touch fouls? that to me is the disparity.

@Lost Ones Okay, so who should the Thunder be pursuing.  Should they be offering MLE type money to Ray Allen?  Why would he come here for the same money as he would get in Miami?  Hint: he wouldn't.  The fact of the matter is that OKC would have to overpay to acquire these types of players, and overpaying in free agency seems counter intuitive when you have three RFA's to deal with.   Who do you want the Thunder to sign?  What are your plans for our restricted free agents?

@justin_mia Yeah--I pretty much agree. They don't need to sign a vet oe free agent for this season because we have  a very good team in place. If something pops with Steven Jackson at the trade deadline...maybe. We could use some snarl and nasty--trust me on that one. My plans for our rfas would be this...sign Harden and Maynor and if need be realize Segre is nowhere near a max level player when you seriously study his entire skill set as a basketball player. I love Serge, but he would not get more than $9 million with me signing the papers. WE CANNOT AFFORD FOUR MAX LEVEL PLAYERS. Make the move when it has to be made and get as much value in return. That is what I would do.

@justin_mia  @Lost Ones justin is all over that like a cheap suit...the reality is that, despite the team's contender status, no worthwhile free agents (no, Fish doesn't count) are going to OkC for a few important reasons: 1) they know Presti won't overpay, 2) there's a perceived lack of NBA-caliber lifestyle, and 3) not a lot of minutes available in that lineup.

@MisterJohnsonOKC  @Lost Ones  @Legendary_dork actually I kind of think the opposite. The obvious narrative from the NBA last season was about Lebron finally winning his ring, Durant rising to the top as the obvious 2nd choice, and the Thunder's youth being "almost ready". If anything, I kind of wonder whether we'll actually get more whistles this year than last as the NBA's team of destiny...   .... That is of course, if we make it by the Lakers, who I'm sure the NBA will favor heavily to push for a Heat-Lakers star studded final.

@FREE_COLE  @courtsense  @justin_mia  1st. cook is useless on our team, we overpaid for him 2nd.  @Lost Ones  @FREE_COLE  @justin_mia I agree across the board. Cook is expendable, Thabo is cheap but his minutes will continue to decline, Jackson will take Maynor's position in time for Maynor to be moved before he gets an extension, and Ibaka is more likely to be traded than Harden...unless he gives Sam a huge hometown discount.

2012-07-06 22:58:21
@Lost Ones  @FREE_COLE  @courtsense  @justin_mia 1) true, but how do we get rid of him and replace him? I'm sure Steve Novak is the first option that comes to mind but the Knicks have said they'll match anything for him. 2) Kind of. Thabo's a very elite perimeter defender on a cheap contract. Would be a good trade chip, but is just as good as a member of the team. 3) Maynor's only what, 2 years older than RJ? Stunting RJ's development sucks, but we can also be developing Maynor for quite a while as well. Not that his ceiling is as high, but it's not like this is Andre Miller or Steve Nash blocking RJ. 4) I don't see Ibaka's value dropping at all. Since he's become a starter, he's been the consensus best shot blocker in the league. That's not changing. But that said, if a good trade presents itself, whether it's at the deadline, now, or next year in free agency, then I wouldn't be opposed to taking it.   The point is... basically none of these have much to do with the gripe that we aren't making a splash in free agency.

I was discussing some basketball with a guy and he had tried to compare the Thunder to the Jazz of the 90's. Two superstars, possibly the best at what they do, on a small market WC team who plays in a great home environment, but never won a chip due to going against a more dominant eastern conference team. While I can see the similarities, the deal is Stockton and Malone did have a great supporting cast, but they themselves were past their primes by the time they got to the Finals. They played for what - 16-17 years before they broke through and got to the Finals? Look how young KD and Russ are, 23 years old, 4th and 5th years in the league. At some point in time, this team WILL have all right ingredients to win the title, and barring major injuries or bizarre trades, it's going to happen in the near future. Could be next year for all we know. Unlike Portland or Denver or New Orleans, we're not going anywhere.

@Daniel OBoymuzik  @K-Dagger Daniel Plainview Noah would be interesting on our team. He runs the floor. Defends well. Has that Presti length. Comes from great cultures at Florida and the Bulls...and has a little snarl to him. Plus--his game does not require touches per se. Noah would interest me bundled with a first round pick. Let's not complicate this with Perk and Gibson for the time being.

@El Prez  @K-Dagger Daniel Plainview in that situation we would have to trade perk..Noah gets paid like 12 a year...but if we traded perk that would only be paying 4 mill more and then we can keep a cheap PF...we're going to be playing small more and more and Nick and hopefully PJIII are servicable PF's

Reasons for optimism this coming season: 1. We still have KD, who flipped a switch during the playoffs, and could be the best player in the league this season. 2. Harden will be better (especially if he gets to play with Kobe in the olympics). 3. Ibaka will still be the best shot-blocker in the league, and has a chance to expand on the flashes of a post game he showed in the playoffs. 4. Perk's groin won't be torn. 5. No more long fisher 2s. 6. Russell Westbrook is a BEAST, and seems to have realized his role on this team. 7. PJ3 could be the best player from this draft class. 8. Eric Maynor will be leading our second unit. 9. The two teams that look like our biggest competition for the title are getting older, and aren't very deep to begin with.

@Daniel OBoymuzik  @K-Dagger Daniel Plainview  If we unloaded Perk's salary this could work. We would have Joakim and Cole at center. Nick and PJIII at PF and fully knowing KD would be absorbing PF minutes when we go small ball. I googled Noah's contract he will be in Year 3 of this $60 million deal this season. You're right--we'd need to hedge our position by acquiring a journeyman PF in the event PJIII isn't ready for this level of ball. Noah for Ibaka and you unload Perk's $8-9 million to make Noah affordable. I wonder if Presti has run this through the grinder?

My worldview is skewed toward basketball but I can't escape the conclusion that the NBA is absolutely blowing up. It is a great time to be a fan of the NBA.
Old Man Game

@courtsense  L.A. is getting better but to the extent they are relying on and building their team this season around aging stars you would assume they are increasing the risk of a collapse if one of those guys were to develop injury issues as older players are prone to do. If you take Nash out of that lineup for a 3 week span for instance, where are they at the end of that?
Old Man Game
2012-07-07 00:34:52
@Daniel OBoymuzik We've seen this before, aging stars that want to join a winner and get a ring. It seems to seldom work out as well as people assume it will. In addition to nearly always being past their prime, oftentimes the aging star is accustomed to starting and or being a major piece or even focal point of the offense. When forced to adapt to a reduced role/coming off the bench many of them have difficulty making the transition.

justin_mia
2012-07-07 00:58:28
@DSYIII The biggest reason to be optimistic is that this is a Finals team that had a relative waltz to the Finals, they'll be at last season's strength or better, and a full training camp to (hopefully) sort out defensive issues.

If you classify PJ3 at his natural position at small forward, then the Thunder is 3-deep at every position except for PF:   Center: Perk, Cole, Thabeet SF: KD, Lazar, PJ3 SG: Thabo, Harden, Cook PG: Westbrook, Maynor, Jackson PF: Ibaka, Collison   Latavious Williams and Ryan Reid, who are both on the summer league roster, should battle it out for the third PF spot.
