Report: Maloofs near deal to sell Kings to Seattle group

You may want to pretend like this has nothing to do with the Thunder, but it does. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Maloofs are nearing a deal to sell the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle group led by Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer. Which of course means the Kings are moving to Seattle, most likely to begin next season.

The Seattle group led by Hansen has jumped all necessary hurdles, the biggest one getting an arena deal approved. That isn’t set to be finished for a few years so reportedly the plan would be for the team to play in Key Arena for a couple seasons, which was deemed unfit to house an NBA team by the league five years ago.

I know what you’re asking: What does this mean for the Thunder?

Here’s what the settlement between Clay Bennett and the city of Seattle looked like:

  • The Thunder have a “shared” history with Seattle. Records and championships are used by the Thunder, but can also be used by Seattle once a new team goes there. So how that actually plays out will be pretty interesting. The Thunder own the 1979 title, but if I understand the settlement right, the new Sonics could claim it as well.
  • All the physical trophies, banners and retired jerseys stayed in Seattle and were stored in a museum/Key Arena. The Thunder were said to be allowed to “borrow” them to put on display periodically though and make copies.
  • Bennett owns the SuperSonics logo and name, but obviously didn’t use them when the team moved to OKC. But under the agreement, if a new team moved back to Seattle, Bennett would turn the logo and name over to the new owner, under no contest and under approval by the league.
  • The settlement included a stipulation that Bennett would pay $30 million to Seattle if the state approved funding for an new arena by Seattle doesn’t get a new franchise within five years. That approval for a new arena had to be done by 2009 though. And it didn’t happen, so that expired.
  • One thing the city of Seattle does not retain the rights to per the settlement is Kevin Durant, and for that, I am very thankful.
  • Lots asked if the Thunder would be moved divisions: That’s up to the league. Division realignment makes sense, but it’s not like an automatic thing.
  • My personal opinion of what happens for OKC: I would think the Thunder would move to try and distance themselves even more from Seattle, and would likely start treating the organization as more of an expansion than anything else. At least that’s what I’d do.
  • Also: I’d advise avoiding any gloating or finger-pointing at Seattle people. Yes, things definitely have a hypocritical tint to them right now, but these wheels were very obviously set in motion by Bennett and his group relocating the team to OKC. Seattle needed a new team because theirs moved to Oklahoma City.
  • Also that said: As has been my position all along, teams relocate. It happens. If the Sonics didn’t move to OKC, they probably were going to move somewhere else. Same goes for the Kings, who were within an eyelash of moving to Anaheim last season. It’s part of the professional sports business.
  • I’d also resist using the word “steal” when talking about all of this. That’s always bugged me. You can’t steal something that you own. Bennett owned the Sonics. It was his business and he could do with it as he pleased, under all legal boundaries. Which he did. And if the Hansen-Ballmer group finishes this off, they own the Kings and can do what they want.
  • What do all you converted Sonic-to-Thunder fans do? I don’t know, but we’d sure love to have you onboard still.
  • Personally, I’m extremely happy for the city of Seattle. That’s a great NBA city and one that absolutely deserves a franchise. I always hated the circumstances that they lost the Sonics, but selfishly, I’m super happy it happened. But great for them and I look forward to a future bloodbath Sonics-Thunder rivalry.

I'm happy for Seattle, I love the city, almost lived there (might still), and really have grown ill of the whining. This can hopefully be great for all of us in OKC too. Like no death threats to T Shirt makers and stuff.    Any holy moly how awesome will this rivalry be?!?!?!

If the new Seattle Kings get Seattle's history, do they also keep Sacramento's? That seems like a weird way to do things. It makes sense for OKC to consider itself like an expansion team and only use it's own history. But, that leaves two histories with a different team. Actual Seattle residents will want Supersonics history, but there may be a notable number of Sacramento fans that want to transfer the history they know to the new team.   Has something like that happened before, where a new team essentially had two different histories at the same time?

@ILikePancakes  @RRRWHATEVER  @justin_mia The Kings have been in Sacramento for over 25 years. They have a history stretching back over 80 years. All that is supposed to just disappear? 25 years is a lifetime in fan terms.   I'm not saying they have a championship-rich history, but they were around for important things. The ref-scandal in the WCF against the Lakers for example.

There was nothing wrong with key arena in the first place. Bennet just wanted to move the team. He won. Serious, they just upgraded it like 10 years ago, and they're saying something like it didn't have enough rich people's suites. What a joke to cater to the non-real fans, that happen to be rich, and strike deals while somewhat watching an nba game.

@D-MC  @happytymes  @eallen7 Note that all the real rivals are teams we've faced in the playoffs. Memphis gave us a tough series. LA beat us and then legitimized us in their defeat. San Antonio was a symbolic passing of the torch.   I don't think we could make a real argument for any team that's only been a regular season rival. The Nuggets have never really been that good, and there's not much animosity when you beat a team 4-1. Our true rivals probably won't be known for another 5 years, when we've met the same team multiple times in the playoffs, and not just as first round fodder.

There are lots of ways to do that, but it doesn't change the fact that Key Arena simply doesn't have the features of modern arenas nor a viable long term financial structure.   If you love a team enough, you'll go anywhere (Joe Louis Arena for the Red Wings sucks actually, but I love the team). But, you don't generate the big bucks by selling cheap seats.

@DangerRuss4ROY Oh come on man, welcome to business 101. In todays world, being 10 years old in ANYTHING is ancient. We had to make the same renovations to our arena. There is no business in America that you can get away with "this was state of the art 10 years ago!"   I'll accept the premise that Bennett and crew knew what they were doing from day 1, but please stop acting like Seattle was fine the way it was and that Schultz just innocently sold the team without knowing what was going on.

Jared Jeffries was once thought of as one of the top defenders in the league.  Here's an blurb from a couple years ago in an article about the leagues best defenders that talks about him...   Most Versatile Defender: Jared Jeffries How many other players in the NBA do you know who could defend a star point guard or a star center in the same game? Jared Jeffries is a one-of-a-kind defender, who can truly do it all. At 6'10", Jared Jeffries has been an incredibly tough matchup for some of the game's top point guards in the NBA this year. In addition, Jeffries size and quickness has generally allowed him to guard the best player on any opposing team, making him a valuable weapon for the Knicks. However, because his offense has yet to catch up to his defense, few NBA fans know about Jeffries...   He's making a little over a million dollars per year with the Trailblazers riding the pine.  We could probably get him for next to nothing.  He would be another guy that could guard anyone.  At 6'11 240 he might be a better Lebron defender than Thabo.  Shawn Marion is 6'7, 228lbs  and 34 years old FYI.

@justin_mia KD is a generational player. A player who will forever leave a legacy imprint on the game...just like Magic, Larry Bird and MJ. KD just needs a coach to monitor Perk's minutes so as to put a championship or two on the legacy resume. I can't imagine not being a fan of KD and America's Team...regardless of the geography.

Why does Royce resist from the word "steal"? Clay bought the Sonics on the premise of keeping the Sonics in Seattle, instead he traded away Ray Allen and packed his bags for OKC. And don't say Seattle is doing the same thing to the Kings, Hansen-Ballmer group's intentions are known and being agreed upon solely buying the team to relocate to Seattle.   Sonics fans don't hate OKC (the city or team), they hate Clay Bennett, the man who lied to get what he wanted. Kings fans shouldn't hate Seattle, but instead the people lying to get what they want, in this case the Maloofs getting their money. It hurts to lose your team, but being lied to about it is worse.

Durant with by far his best winshares per 48 this season of his career. I'd guess he has a very good shot to win MVP if the Thunder have one of 2 best records at the end. If they are 4th or worse, he is less likely to get it.   Collison with his best winshares per 48 by far. Westbrook up slightly. Perkins now has 3 years with Thunder in his bottom 4 of his career.

Keith00

@studmuffn4 That's a nice sentiment in the second paragraph, but the loudest voices tend to disagree with you. Most every person who came out to disagree with the move to OKC has something disparaging to say about the city and its fans. Maybe you don't feel that way, but don't pretend it doesn't exist.   Also, how is it any better for the owner to come out and say, "Yeah, we're selling the team and they are moving, suck it, Sacramento!" Does the fact that Bennet had to be judicious about his soundbites really change anything? At least Sonic fans were given the illusion of control over their teams destiny (they voted down public funding), Sacramento fans were just slapped in the face halfway through the season.

Collison is to the Thunder what Raymond Bourque was to the Bruins. A throwback. A guy who did everything for the team and city. "If the Sonics didn’t move to OKC, they probably were going to move somewhere else."  Simply not true.  The previous ownership group understood the value that 41 years of history meant to the city of Seattle and would not sell to an owner with the intention of relocating (this was despite the arena situation).  Bennett put up a front pretending to want to keep the team in Seattle and we eventually figured what his real intentions were (thanks Aubrey for that). The relocation of the Sonics to OKC was covered in lies and deceit and that's why there was (and still is) so much bitterness.  Chris Hansen doesn't need to lie to anyone.  Everyone knows what his intentions are.

@BallSoHard  @dmason_24  @justin_mia  @FF_pickups No one is saying that Sacramento is not getting hosed.  The 2 situations are not apples to apples.  They are completely different.   The Maloofs own the Kings and are jerking Sacramento around because they want to relocate to somewhere more favorable or get a sweet heart of a deal (the $391 deal would have them contributing too much of their own money than they would have liked).   In Seattle, Bennett bought the team, held a press conference that his one and only intention is to keep the team in Seattle but that was never the case.

For a while that city treated the Kings kinda like OKC treats the Thunder today.  So I'm less interested in the Seattle hypocrisy angle than I am in the this-could-be-us-in-twenty-five-years angle.  Let's hope that OKC and the ownership make sure that it isn't!

@thomasglassman  @Aren't When did Westbrook play or even practice in Seattle?  Most there forget that it was Bennett-Presti that drafted KD.  By the same token, Chris Paul won ROY in OKC, then the franchise moved.  It happens.

@qrex  @thomasglassman  @Aren't  sorry didn't realize you had erased KD from the original message,  no Westbrook never played in Seattle.  He did come here after the draft for a photo shoot and meet and greet with fans...(grrr).  No one in Seattle forgets that it was Presti who drafted KD, why would we forget that?  The New Orleans "franchise" was never in OKC permanently  and was always going back to New Orleans no matter what.  To compare that with 41 years of history where a franchise was created and then stolen is slightly different.    Also, drafting someone high in the draft and then losing them to another city is indeed, losing them.

@thomasglassman  @Aren't So, it matters where it occurred, which franchise it occurred for, or what??    You seem inconsistent.

I'm not sure how else to say it..    If you have players on your team you want, and they leave, you are dissapointed.    If you say something that isn't factual, you are wrong.    That is all that has happened here.  We lost a franchise that became good, we are getting a franchise that is currently bad.    get it yet?
