Rob Hennigan named new Magic GM

by Royce Young on June 20, 2012 at 4:27 pm 11 Comments

UPDATE: This is now official.

—

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Orlando Magic are closing in on Otis Smith’s replacement and they’re going to the Presti farm for it.

Thunder assistant general manager Rob Hennigan is in “advanced talks” to become the Magic’s next GM.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports Hennigan has been offered the position and the two sides are sorting out a contract.

Hennigan, 30, has spent four seasons in Oklahoma City. His first two were spent as the team’s Director of College and International Player Personnel before he was promoted to an assistant GM when former assistant GM Rich Cho was hired as GM of the Blazers in 2010.

Like Sam Presti, Hennigan worked for the Spurs for five years before joining the Thunder, beginning as an intern before climbing up the organization. Again like Presti, he is a graduate of Emerson College.

Not hard to see what the Magic are trying to do here.

Will Hennigan bid or bid big on Scott Brooks? I doubt it.

might go for Budenholzer with the Spurs and maybe this time he takes it

@Crow Will he take many staff with him? Probably a few.

Wonder what he tries to sell Howard on or sell Howard for.

I assume he will offer big for Harden and Ibaka but Presti can match.

I assume he will try to dump Turkoglu. Wonder who will be interested. How much does he spend to keep Anderson. Does he keep or dump Davis. Lots of decisions that could affect other teams and perhaps next season's contenders.

General Manager of an NBA team at 30? I'm 30 and I can barely manage my own day-to-day operations.

@jkb83 personal connections played a big part in getting thru the door (same college as Presti). he played and probably is quite talented but personal connections allowed him the chance to get evaluated.

@jkb83 almost everyone who gets in the door is a friend of a friend or has some other edge that is not directly about basketball analytic talent

@Crow That's why the GMs  make such questionable decisions.

The Magic can take Rob, provided they also sign off on a deal that sends Howard to OKC for Cole, Nazr, Lazar, Reggie and any residual rights OKC has to Byron Mullens and Robert Swift. Kind of an NBA version of the Hershel Walker deal. Kind of not.

Maybe he'll trade us Dwight for James and Serge.
