Thunder sign undrafted rookie Hollis Thompson

With two days to go in Summer League and players battling for an open 15th roster spot, the Thunder have already found their last man. Oklahoma City has signed undrafted rookie Hollis Thompson from Georgetown to a three-year deal, the team officially announced Wednesday.

Thompson isn’t playing for anyone in Summer League as he’s been dealing with some recent injuries. He’s a rangy 6-8 small forward that as a junior averaged 12.8 points, and 5.5 rebounds per game while hitting 43.0 percent from 3. He’s a shooter by trade, knocking down perimeter shots at a high clip.

Thompson will have a minor procedure on his left groin and will be available to return to activities in 3-4 weeks, the team says.

His likely role will be sitting in a suit and focusing on development, but he’s certainly an intriguing prospect just because of his shooting ability. Here’s what Draft Express says about him:

As an NBA prospect, Thompson’s calling card is his perimeter shooting, where he’s proven to be outstanding, knocking down a career-high 48% from 3-point range this season, despite an increase in attempts. He has textbook form, deep range, and a quick release, which along with his size at 6’8”, allow him to get off his shot without needing much space. Thompson ranks as one of the best shooters in college basketball, which in and of itself is enough to put him firmly on the NBA radar.

Thompson does most of his damage spotting up with his feet set, but he’s also shown that he’s capable of being run off screens, where he squares himself up nicely for his jumper. In addition to his catch-and-shoot abilities, Thompson is also very effective shooting off of a dribble or two on close-outs, connecting on an excellent 42% of his pull-up jumpers this season.

The Thunder like to use their 15th spot on players like this, providing flexibility while also having the chance to develop talent. Thompson will be extremely cheap (around $490,000 per year) and while his first season is a guaranteed deal, after that he could be waived. Or he could turn out to be good and a future replacement for someone.

What this means: The Thunder won’t be signing Grant Hill, Nazr Mohammed won’t be returning, Derek Fisher won’t be returning and Royal Ivey won’t be returning. By signing Hasheem Thabeet, drafting Perry Jones III and now reportedly signing Thompson, the Thunder have their full 15-man roster.

No, he’s not Ray Allen, but some Thunder fans don’t seem to understand why OKC’s not targeting big name veterans. This Thunder team has a very complicated future roster situation ahead and if you want them having a shot at retaining James Harden, Serge Ibaka and maybe even Eric Maynor, committing to anything long-term with big dollars attached makes zero sense. The Thunder are being extremely prudent and mindful to their financial predicament. Which is what you’d expect from this front office.

Oklahoma City’s roster has been virtually complete for the last two years. There isn’t really a piece to be added. Like the Thabeet signing, this is a low risk maneuver with the future in mind. And pretty much that’s all.

Today was actually a decent day at the office. I now only hate 93.4% of the people I work with. Met a couple new employees that don't seem to suck. Maybe this is what a solid player on the Bobcats feels like. Just collect a check and buy time till a new team comes along. On another note-Since our roster is now at the maximum 15 players, it appears we are not going to participate in this year's FA. (unless u count Thabeet and Thompson, which I don't). To participate we would have to trade one of the players not named PJ3, Thompson, or Thabeet. They can't be traded before december and I don't see Presti getting rid of any of the other 12. I think he believes we can win it all with our current club. I disagree completely. Our role players were not able to fill their roles in the finals. They just vanished. Or was it Brooks' adjustments that vanished?

don't know if this has been posted but here's a short interview with PJIII...think it was recorded yesterday    http://www.hoopsworld.com/orlando-summer-league-perry-jones-iii   i like that he's not pouting about falling in the draft, excited for when he gets with the rest of the team and the guys giving him advice will be KD, Nick, Perk, Serge and the coaching staff instead of Reggie.    The one thing i do worry about is that maybe he feels like he's not good enough to get minutes on this team

Seriously though-Can we beat Miami (or the rest of the West) with only our guys having another year under their belt and PJ3? I'm a little nervous about next year. We start a defense heavy line up and our 2nd team is decent and unproven at best. It's almost as if we are preparing to play Cole, Cook, and Lazar some decent minutes.

Titanic was a nice movie, but it didn't make my Top 50. I don't even think it was one of Leonardo's two best movies. The Departed and Blood Diamond were far superior to Titanic. Nice movie--got to see Kate Winslet almost naked, but  let's be for real on here. I don't have time for this right now---I'm trying to crunch these Noah for Serge and Perk numbers for my presentation to Presti.

Thunder roster is set. The only thing I would change is the notion that Aldrich will be playing more minutes. I would like to see the Thunder focus more on playing small, by putting the best ballers on the court. The center position is not as important as it once was, not in today's NBA.

Lot of negativity regarding our 2013 roster vs Miami but I ain't feeling it, as if being the 2nd best team in the NBA is some kind of disgrace. Just get to the finals again & we'll see what happens. Forgetting the 4-1 final tally, if we get some respect from the refs & a couple things break differently, we've got a different conversation. Ray Allen at his age & Lewis ain't difference makers.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct  @Lost Ones For those who don't want to bother with the link, koolcrud made a great comment earlier regarding Hollis Thompson   Alright, I'm a Georgetown alum and massive Hoya fan, so let me give you all my scouting report on Hollis Thompson, as someone who's seen every game of his college career.   If you leave Hollis open, he will absolutely make you pay with his jump shot. That's the most important thing about his game, the kid is an absolutely dead eye shooter and he's made that three for buzzer beater wins. He has an issue with passivity on the court, but that won't be a problem given the role he's been asked to handle. Oddly, he's not a good FT shooter, Hoya fans were never sure why that was. I assume its mechanical and will be corrected by the coaching staff. His handle is very suspect for the next level; this is something he'll need to work on. He has the length and athleticism to be a good defender, but was never tasked with shutting down an opponent's best option as a Hoya (that was always senior guard Jason Clark). He is a solid rebounder for his position, moreso on the defensive end than the offensive one. He's a strong passer, as is everyone who comes out of JT3's princeton-style system. (JT3, the coach of Georgetown, used to coach Princeton and Pete Carrill, the inventor of the passing-centric princeton offense is one of his biggest mentors.)   Hollis Thompson is a very smart kid, he was rumored to have the highest grades and SATs of a Georgetown scholarship player since Princeton Transfer Jon Wallace. He should be able to pick up our basic offensive sets and defensive rotations quickly. If he is able to improve his handle, he has a chance to give us basically what Daquan Cook does with the upside potential of less streakiness.

Did no one read the article? We don't need to sign a bunch of star players because we already have them. What we don't have are guys sitting on the bench to develop. And our players are young, their min and max will only go up. We have to keep room below to cap to make way for resigning Harden and Ibaka.

I am unreasonably sad about losing a never used bench player in Royal. But I love the guy. Sounds crazy, but probably the saddest I've been about losing a player since Uncle Jeff.   That said, I completely understand it. We are getting cheaper, younger and potentially better. Definitely saving some money to pay Serge, Beard and Maynor. It's smart. It's the right move. I support it. But I'm bummed to lose Smoke.

What does this mean for Daequan? Thompson, from what i gather, is a younger, cheaper, more athletic, and a more consistent shooter. So does this mean Daequan getting traded or amnestied? That seems to be the only way this makes sense. Why would we need another backup 3/ 3 point specialist unless we're getting rid of Daequan

It seems to me that anyone griping about our lack of moves just doesn't fully understand what the front office of this team is about. Once again, they are doing everything with building for the long term in mind. That's how it's been since the team came to OKC and that's how it's going to continue to be. It's the same reason we didn't go after David Lee despite so many on here bitching for it to happen. This is Presti's extension of the Spurs' model. Get used to it.

I said this a couple weeks ago jokingly, but it seems like it might really be the case. It really seems like Presti might be trying to Brooks-proof our roster. It first started by moving Jeff Green and in turn opening up additional minutes for Harden and Ibaka. And now with the most recent moves, he's also taken Nazr and Brooks' obsession with playing Fisher way too many minutes out of the equation. It's like he's saying "we trust you to motivate the guys and to continue to develop them, but we don't trust your ridiculous lineups so were going to take care of that for you."

@DavidMN  @DXL Sorry. my previous post wasn't very clear. i think that, if you shoot Better than 33% that makes you a good shooter. better then 40% makes you a specialist. 45% makes you an elite specialist.    When you look at a players 3pt% you have to take into consideration the type of shots that they are taking. Where are they on the floor? Are they open. by nature the specialist will take more "good" looks from three then a regular player, and more open looks. now if a player shoots on average 12% better when left open and a 3pt specialist shoots up to 50% of their shots as open shots then they should be expected to hit 40%   This is just a really convoluted way of me saying that i think cook is a good shooter but a bad specialist.

justin_mia
2012-07-11 17:28:12
@Lost Ones Yet, he was the best shooter in the NBA by far last season.  It doesn't matter what his other qualities are, teams legitimately game plan for him because he is elite at what he does.  There are many players who earn NBA pay checks being singularly elite at some aspect of the game.  Reggie Evans has made a career out of being an elite rebounder, and pretty awful at everything else.  Yet he has been a key role player for a bunch of good teams.  If you can take away a player's best skill offensively, unless that player is a star they will probably be severely compromised.  Novak is not being paid like a star, he is being paid like a valuable role player, which he most definitely is.

@candycanelane  @Lost Ones That's true for most elite spot up shooters.  Receiving that kind of defensive attention is important, and 98 minutes of playoff basketball shouldn't give any lasting impressions on a player's ability.  This would be the same as evaluating James Harden solely on his performance in the Finals.  It's silly.

@justin_mia  @Lost Ones I agree with you that that's the case for spot up shooters. I'm not saying he has no value, but on a team like the knicks, with their terribly uncreative stagnant offense, it's not difficult to gameplan against him. Harden has a different skill set and isn't limited to shooting spot-up 3s, Novak is.

@Lost Ones  @candycanelane That isn't the point and you know it.  The point is that making a sweeping generalization about a player based on such a small sample is ridiculous.  "James Harden cannot create his own offense on the floor against good defenses".  Is that fair to say?  Some people here did after the Finals but that's the kind of sweeping generalization that flies in the face of a lot of James' success otherwise.  "Steve Novak can be taken out of the game by defending him".  Is that fair to say, since the only evidence for this is one playoff series, sub-100 minutes?  I don't think so.

This Presti guy is pretty amazing. I was imagining how Almond or Temple would look with the Thunder - both have good length and good long range shooters and debating what guy would be the best fit(picked Temple so far) and then Presti comes up with a guy that is younger, longer and a better shooter, and probably cheaper. I'm a Georgetown fan. Some thoughts on Hollis:   His shot really is a thing of beauty. Very high, very quick release. In college his threes were mostly set shots off passes and dribble hand-offs. He has some slashing ability but his handle and finishing isn't quite NBA-ready yet. But it's unlikely he'll ever be tasked with creating offense. The issue that would keep him off the court is defense. He's not bad, he's serviceable. But it's definitely possible he'll struggle a little bit with quicker, stronger twos.  He is never going to be an elite ball-hawk. Physically he has nice size for his position (which in the NBA is shooting guard, even though we played him in the front court) but other than that there is nothing special and his lateral quickness is not good. If he works hard he should be an adequate defender. He makes good decisions and his a really smart kid (I don't just mean basketball smart). He's very cocky (His nickname was Hollywood) but not selfish or a gunner and can definitely fill a role.   I think he's a nice pick up for the Thunder. For the money there's a really good chance he ends up contributing in the next few years. I won't be surprised if he sees the court this year if the coaching staff feels he is up to the task defensively. In fact, I sort of wonder if he wasn't part of OKC's original draft-day plan before Perry Jones III dropped.

So this means no Fisher right? Nothing cold make me happier then getting rid of that albotross around our neck. Though technically its Brooks fault for not only playing him so many minutes, but playing him so many minutes at sg which totally killed our defense and rebounding.   Very smart move by Presti keeping Fisher off the roster so Brooks cannt sabotage the team again with Fisher.

@Lost Ones  @ThunderChick2010 Not necessarily.  You just have to understand the flaws.  Take Rondo and Kyrie for example.  PER favors Kyrie because he is a shooter.  Wins Produced favors Rondo.  But when you understand those flaws, you can both use them as part of evaluation but be apprehensive.  They aren't useless, nor are they end all be all answers.     And Morey has actually drafted decently he just doesn't hold them long enough.  Drafted Batum but traded him. Marcus Morris over Kawhi was probably a mistake in hindsight but at the time they were looking to trade Scola, so not sure how to evaluate it.  Mirotic we haven't seen, and Chandler Parsons was a positive.  I really like Royce White and think that'll be a good draft too. Lamb and Henson I'm not sure on.  So he's at least average at drafting

@persiansooner13 He was part of that group of college players that would go in the second round if those picks weren't always used to stash away Euros. I wasn't going to be surprised if someone used a pick on him (If the Pacers were willing to take Mile Plumlee in the first round...). During the year I definitely thought he'd make an NBA team, just based on size and shooting. Best college shooter I've seen since Stephen Curry (though Hollis didn't shoot at anywhere close to the same volume).

I got interrupted earlier by household stuff so I didn't get to follow up on my original post. Basically I was really hoping to see Williams on the roster because I think he can be a dirty work/glass eater type akin to a Kenneth Faried. I know we seem fairly set as far as bigs go but I just think every team could use a guy like Faried, the Thunder included. That sort of energy is contagious and is always a good thing.

@jdstorm 6'8 is probably right in shoes. He's technically a swing-man and could probably guard 2nd-3rd string small forwards. But to feel comfortable at the 3 I'd expect him to have to put on 10-15 lbs of muscle and I don't know if that would slow him down. Both his game and his frame feel like those of a shooting guard to me-- in the way that Jeff Green really should be a small forward, or TMac was a shooting guard. He's also got a post-game he could use against smaller two-guards.

Love the move. Hope people are prepared for these types of moves because it probably means that we are looking to break the bank and re-sign Harden and Ibaka. Our young guys are now our veterans. KD, Russ, Harden, and Ibaka have now played together in 8 playoff series and are now battle-tested. We should no longer need the steady hand of a veteran in tight situations. These guys should know what to do. So how do we fill in the gaps when we'll possibly have 5 players making over $8.5 million? We get cheap young players with potential. Same thing the Spurs have done with Gary Neal and Danny Green.

Martin, a bad contract for a guy who sucks at defense and doesn't make this teammates better on offense. Scola given big money at the age where players of that type start to decline. Invested in Brooks then Dragic and have nothing for it. Lowry was his best contract and he throws him away because he got upset at his coach who should be gone within 2 years. Budinger was one of his better draft picks and he moves him as well. No idea what their frontline will be.Hyped Courtney lee and he never got better and now is gone. On and on.  @duhsweetness  @DennisBerry I'll always think of Green as sort of the beginning of the end of Oklahoma State's men's basketball program. He was committed to OSU which was coming off a Final Four run a few years before, things were all firmly positive. One of the top recruits in the country was committed in Green. Then Green went NBA instead, the rest of his recruiting class didn't live up to expectations and the the next thing you know fast forward a few years and Gallagher-Iba Arena is 70-80% empty most home games. Something that would have been unthinkable at the beginning of the 2000s.

Then he fell off and caught just some unlucky circumstances, rumors got around he was a headcase, but the real reason he got cut from Houston for example was that right after they signed him, Yao got injured, so Houston (where he's from btw) had to cut him to sign a big guy and they signed Michael Harris

@Jameswade99 C) Both A and B? Brooks was putrid in the finals, which didn't help our situation at all. Our role players didn't play up to their potential either though. I think we can definitely win as currently constructed, but we need maturation from a couple guys in particular (Ibaka and Harden) on the big stage, and Brooks needs to do some really really serious self evaluation this summer. If those two things happen, we still have 4 players who can give you around 120 points on a good night and play good defense. That's enough to win a chip if they come through, with or without a great performance from the rest of the squad.

During the finals it was a surprise because of who it was coming from, this year it wont be a surprise.   THERE IS NO ONE ON MIAMI THAT OKC CANT GUAURD 1 on 1. Lebron will get his 25 -30.  @Jameswade99 Chris Bosh is most important to the Heat, without him, they are vary beatable.  He made it very difficult for Serge and Perk to stay infront of.  Which made it easy for Battier to move around unnoticed.  The Thunder are going to get better.  Lebron has reached his peak.  He is not going to average 30 points, 10 assist 10 rebounds ever.  KD hasn't even gotten started.  RW can only become more efficent shooting a jumper and 3.  Harden needs to get more muscle.  He needs to be our defensive muscle (Ron, Shawn Marion, Deshawn Stevenson all are big dudes.  Durant can't do that but Harden can)

@Tricia_status  @MisterJohnsonOKC But we lack the focus to guard him, or anyone who can make an open 3.   And let's not act like Chalmers didn't score the "nail in the coffin" basket in game 5 on Westbrook.  @MisterJohnsonOKC  @DennisBerry  @Tricia_status  Okay you guys are too much. Like Tricia said doubling Lebron really did not help OKC for preventing the crazy 3 point shooting. KD did fine on Lebron. Lebron and KD are going to theirs. Yes even against eachother. Yeah KD got in foul trouble so it was somewhat understandable that Brooks tried to hide him but really a lot of the calls were from Dwade because apparently him and the refs have a secret love affair. But really the heart of the problem of their inconsistent defense is discipline. This falls on the defensive coach. I don't know if it didn't get addressed or just was a habit they couldn't break in time but there was a lottt of over helping . Coach K got on KD about over helping in practice today so hopefully he soaks up this knowledge and passes it to the team. These things can be fixed. Will it? Who knows but lets not act like those Heat players can beat OKC players one on one.

this is fantastic (via timbontemps)    I broke the news to MarShon that the Nets had signed Jerry Stackhouse today, leading to this excellent response:   Brooks: "I want to talk to Jerry. When I was young I went to a Hawks game and he didn’t sign my autograph. He told me no. I remember that."

@supreme35  @MisterJohnsonOKC  @Tricia_status I don't get how the 2nd best team in the L, and these players 3 of which are like top 20 continued to make the same elementary mistake time and again and not adjust. Literally even multiple possessions in a row, KD (or whoever, not just him) would help, their man would get a kickout 3. Next possession, overhelp, their man would hit a 3.   Not only would Brooks not call a timeout and address it, the players themselves would never reconcile in their mind, "Every time I help and leave my man open, he hits the open 3. I'm not helping this time, I'm going to stay home."   You learn "stay home on shooters" in like 4th grade ball

@DennisBerry  @supreme35  @MisterJohnsonOKC honestly, while I was watching the game, it dawned on me that -- maybe its a non-traditional defensive strategy not to double a star. Like the mentality is -- Oh My God is Lebron double team him quick. It shouldve been " Look here Thabo/KD. Lebron James is not Allen Iverson. He's not going to cross the heck out of you.  @Old Man Game  @OBoymuzik i know he's played.  I meant, as opposed to some of these other guys in the summer league, he seems ready to contribute now.  he looked fearless, played decent d, shot the ball pretty well and attacked the rim.  i'd rather have a third string 2 (or possibly 3) like that, than one that plays good d, but is completely non existent on offense, or another that ONLY shoots 3s.  plus, i see our window being RIGHT NOW.  investing in rookies to stash for years down the road doesn't seem like the plan we should be taking after losing in the finals.  i just dont see cook, hayward, or thompson contributing very much this year, not that temple would, but he's impressed me more than hayward.  sure, hayward's scoring, but he seems like he doesn't even think about passing every time he touches it unless he absolutely has to.  temple just seems to make the right plays.

After reading everyone's comments (mine included) about our non-changing roster, I've come to the same conclusion as OBoyzOldMan. We are going to like our roster once the season starts. KD-RW-JH will be another year wiser. Serge is going to learn a few tricks from "The Dream". PJ3 will allow us to play small ball longer stretches of the game. MAYNOR is BACK to facilitate the 2nd team. (major addition) That's just 4 reasons why we are going to bs a better and deeper team in 2012-13!!! I'm very encouraged by this signing. This team desperately needed more 3-point shooting and the fact that Thompson is 6-8 makes him the ideal backup to KD at the 3. We've needed another shooter with size ever since Jeff Green left. This could be a steal for Presti.

After it became clear it was going to be Miami, tickets in my same section went for about $1600.   I usually use stubhub and ticketexchange, "secret" is to wait until mere hours before gametime as the deadline on those sites approaches and people who are asking for too much have to "settle" and start lowering their prices closer to face value or risk not selling at all.   I got great seats in the San Antonio and Lakers series that way, in 114 about 10 rows up from the bench. It's a $285 face, I paid 300 both times

Quick question, do you guys think Lebron has reached his peak?  Statistically, this was his best year ever.  Do you guys think he is capable of producing much better stats and all around performance?  I seriously think he gave his all this year in his road to the championship.  What do you guys think?  How long can he keep being considered a great player in the league?
thelaughingwiseman
2012-07-12 01:47:06
@courtsense L, Hayward.  I don't think we're getting Hill.  I haven't really heard of Thompson and DCook doesn't have defense or other offensive skills other than shooting the 3.  I think L Hayward brings more to the table, defense, youth and seems capable of shooting in the mid-range
DavidMN
2012-07-12 01:49:10
@thelaughingwiseman His peak, yes.  His statistical peak, no.  As Wade ages, he will deteriorate at a much faster rate than either Bron or Bosh.  With his improved post game and slow development in to a 4, as well as wade's limited role, I can see Bron putting up equal or better numbers for the next 5 seasons before age starts to show much.  Even at that point he will still be a great player, but possibly not top 1 by the margin he's at now

@thelaughingwiseman He'll get better He just spent some time working on his post game and look how deadly he was. He will continue to get better, and I think he will also improve his shot sometime in the future cause he can't barrel into the lane forever without some wear and tear on his body

@thelaughingwiseman There's always room to improve. He's just hit his prime. There's probably another 3 years of him at least making minor improvements, as well as changing how he is used.  He'll go to his post game more often and he could always be a better shooter, though that ship may have sailed. Through February he was at a pretty unreal level. He petered out a bit toward the end (in comparison to his own impressive standard. He's only 27, but he's also played more than 32k minutes in his career so far. 3k or more a season plus ~800 or so a playoffs and he's getting up there at a pretty young age.

@thunderatom   @thelaughingwiseman I guess what I meant to say is we will see a similar line from lebron (26-7-7) for a few years.  As he and Wade slow, I can see those numbers shifting more towards 23-9-9.  Deciding which of those is more worthy of statistical peak wasn't a conclusion I wanted to make

2012-07-12 02:06:42
@DavidMN  @thelaughingwiseman That's the thing, even when great players are losing it, they are still great. KG was managed well when he went to Boston. He was playing close to 40 minutes in Minny and went to close to 30 when he went to the Celtics (age 30-31). Makes a big difference. If he's still averaging 38 or 39 minutes a game when he's 31 or 32, the coaching staff isn't doing him any favors.
DavidMN
2012-07-12 02:17:17
@Jooseppi  @thelaughingwiseman Maybe this is just me but I don't see lebron's career ending in Miami.  As the team is structured I can't see how it possibly could.  When they come off contract in '16, Wade will be 34, bron will be 31, bosh 32.  At that point, they'll either pick 1 or 2, have them finish careers there, which I'd guarentee Wade is part of.  Bron will still be highly capable of adding to a contender, so I see him moving elsewhere.

This is mainly due from Dwighmare fatigue:  Ship Ibaka, Perkins, Cook to Orlando, SIgn Dwight and Brand

@K-Dagger Plainview If Ibaka/Maynor/Perk gets him then you do that in a heartbeat, regardless of whether it's a rental or not. A Westbrook/Harden/KD/Collison/Dwight lineup would be beyond unstoppable.

Just to put it out there, In my own personal opinion, I don't think there is any way of us getting D12 if the deal isn't at least Harden/Ibaka/Perkins+pick, If anything Perkins might actually be a negative, and we may just be better cutting him. More likely the deal would cost Westbrook, which i know Dwight is a better overall talent, at this point i think its obvious(Get ready i'm about to pull a Chris Brousard) that this franchise will not be trading him.

@Bryson  it's not even close Hasheem has been a bigger bust, here's some comparisions   Games Started- Darko 208 Thabeet-16 MPG- Darko 18 Thabeet 10   even if darko has been in the league like 5 years more than thabeet i don't think thabeet is going to catch up

@ElMexiThunder I thought it would take Harden/Ibaka/Perkins for that trade to happen as well but even with the Ibaka/Perkins/Maynor trade Orlando would more quality players than most teams could provide. I mean they went through all that trouble and almost agreed to take the terrible Nets deal just to get something for him. I feel like the only teams who could legitimately offer something up to par would be Lakers, Bulls, and Thunder and the Lakers would be out because Bynum wouldn't sign there.
