Russell Westbrook signs with Adidas?

by Royce Young on September 19, 2012 at 12:55 pm 282 Comments

Via Kix and the City:

While there had been rumors of Russell Westbrook leaving Nike this Summer for another brand, adidas Philippines (an official adidas account) may have just put those rumors to bed as they uploaded this picture to their Instagram account with the caption BOOM! #russellwestbrook. As a background, Westbrook has been what is considered a “sneaker free agent” and has been on the radar of several sneaker brands. If this is in fact a definitive confirmation of Westbrook joining the Three Stripes family, he joins a stellar group of Summer signings for adidas which already included Ricky Rubio, Austin Rivers, Harrison Barnes, Quincy Acy, Dre Drummond, PJ3, Dame Lillard, Ty Taylor, and Josh Selby. More to come so stay tuned.

Westbrook has a signature Nike shoe as sort of the lead guy for the Hyperfuse line, but he became a sneaker free agent this summer. And Adidas is looking to really make a stamp on the NBA world with Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard, so Westbrook was a natural fit as he’s an exploding superstar.

There’s a good chance too that Westbrook will be one of their featured players, getting his own line and own spots and such. Which will be cool.

Westbrook would join Perry Jones III, Kendrick Perkins, Daequan Cook, Cole Aldrich and Serge Ibaka as Adidas wearers on the Thunder.

Continuing with the theme of "who are the thunder players like," I unveil my "if thunder players were NFL players, list"

Russ- Michael Vick. Sensationally Talented 2 Guard! (just kidding- skip bayless). But basically sensational athlete with explosive talent but you have to live with questionable decision making at times.

Kevin Durant- Calvin Johnson. Basically unguardable on on one, and their personalities are similar- humble superstars with other wordly talent.

James Harden- Frank Gore. For those who know Gore: versatile, crafty, and just an overall solid player. Excels in the game due to IQ, consistency, and has an "old school" game.

Serge Ibaka- Julius Peppers. Has an Elite Skill that distinguishes him from the rest. Unbelievable talent.

Perkins- Justin Smith, 49ers. Tough. Doesnt like you, your mom, your family. Workhorse. Does the Dirty Work. Mauler.

Thabo Sefolosha-  Revis. not perfect, but close. Defensive technician. Physical, quick, can play different styles.

Maynor- Tony Gonzalez. Reliable, safety blanket, not explosive (anymore for gonzalez) but will make the right play.

Collison- Vonta Leach. Smart, tough, gets other people open - through screens or passes. Very good cog in an efficient machine.

Feel free to disagree- these were all just the first people that popped into my head, even if the analogies are  a bit tenuous.

Not bad. Can see Vick-Westbrook. Definitely see KD-Calvin Johnson.Ibaka-Peppers check. With Harden I'd go Demarco Murray in place of Gore. Thabo-Revis check. Perk-Smith check. Maynor...I'd maybe go with Tavaris Jackson. Collison is my favorite Thunder player and while I'd admire Vonta Leach's TSN as a space creater...I think Nick is more than that. Urlacher popped into my head for Nick. Fun list. I'm going to do my Ten Favorite Southern Vegetables List tomorrow...so you can return the favor.

the food discussion below made me wonder (and hungry) , what food group would each of the thunder players be?

durant- protein. no downside

westbrook- carbs. good, necessary, but too much of it can be a bad thing.

sefolosha- vegetables. necessary evil.

ibaka - dessert. enticing, but can be bad for u if not harnessed.

perkins-dairy. just because of the milk commercial.

harden- fruit. pretty good for you. necessary.

@Thunder S Cole is cauliflower. Because hes white and terrible, no matter how much some snooty individuals try to convince you otherwise. Lazar Hayward is vegetables, because you always buy it when you go to the store thinking you need some, but don't make a salad or anything with it before it totally goes bad and you have to throw it away.

@DennisBerry Cmon, man, cauliflower is not that bad. if you spice it and dice it the right way, it can be camouflaged with the protein/carbs. Also, it does that cool leg kick thing.

@OBoymuzik I just want to see the part where they designed the Nets lameass jerseys Anybody seent them? They look like intramural jerseys, and could have been so much more with the classic black and white. Plus I want to see a meeting where Jay Z "no I'm not a Jonas, brutha I'm an owner" and his fraction of a percent ass tries to say something and gets shut down by Prokohrov.

Let's push these basketball comments to the side for the moment. I went ahead and googled macaroni and cheese in relation to...is it a vegetable? There's a very provocative piece in a Memphis cuisine magazine on this very subject. In the South..which Oklahoma is certainly a member of as far as politics and cooking go...macaroni and cheese is considered a vegetable.

@DennisBerry  @El Prez I'm not saying it's a realistic world view. I just think it explains what you're getting at as to lower middle class and working poor class people who at times vote for things that don't necessarily favor them directly. So they vote for a guy who wants to cut the capital gains rate on one hand but on the other also cut stuff like pell grants and other forms of financial aid by which they might be able to move up the ladder.

@Old Man Game  @El Prez But Sally Mae in Bumblefuck, SomeGOPState doesn't have a robust stock portfolio and multiple offshore accounts nor the education to even understand these tax loopholes. And obviously I won't argue with you W was a terrible president, but at the least he was kind of down to Earth, followed baseball, drunk beer, and again come off as a real person; just not a smart one fit to run a country. Mitt, has no redeeming qualities whatsoever unless you are a 1% (actually 4% since 250k is where he set the cutoff for middle class). I mean dude literally told a college student at a campaign event when asked about the riding cost of higher education, "just borrow it from your parents."

Dennis brought up the redneck beer...I couldn't just leave it laying there. BTW...I was a member of the GOP from 1976-2000. When I witnessed W trying to answer a question in a 2000 GOP primary debate...I changed my registration to Independent. I have a rule/axiom...if you will. I expect a sitting U.S. president to be smarter than me. That wasn't the case from 2000-08.

@DennisBerry  @El Prez In this country everyone believes they can be rich. The land of opportunity and such. So even if someone is dirt poor they still tend to favor policies like low taxes on capital gains because they believe someday their ship might still come in.

@El Prez plus the overwhelming majority of states with the most people who "can't be convinced to take responsibility and care for their lives," are Southern states who vote GOP.... and his own dad was on welfare for a while... and Paul Ryan is a compulsive liar (still insists he ran a 3hr 26 mile marathon). As you said, people who make 22k a yr at the local Piggy Wiggly and shucking wood on the weekends are somehow really convinced that they share the same interests with a billionaire and their lives are how they are, because of the minorities, gays, Muslims, and Jews.

Here's what cracks me up about the GOP and places like Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and other states in the New Confederacy...white guys with no college who make less $30,000 a year would rather vote for the canidate you just described rather than vote for a black liberal who might actually be more sensitive to their overall general plight. It would be interesting to canvass white males in Oklahoma under the age of 35 and see how many of them actually know what GOP stands for. I would guess maybe 10% would answer Grand Old Party.

Adidas produces a better product in nearly every way imaginable. I ran mid distance track for 12 years and there isn't a shoe out there that lasted me an entire season outside of Adidas. I refuse to wear anything Nike. They often broke down after a few weeks of heavy use.
