Serge Ibaka named to NBA first team All-Defense

by Royce Young on May 23, 2012 at 12:51 pm 14 Comments

After leading the league in blocks and finishing runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, Serge Ibaka was named to the NBA’s first team All-Defense.

Ibaka joins LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Tony Allen.

The league’s Defensive Player of the Year, Tyson Chandler, was named to the second team, somehow.

On the second team is Kobe Bryant, Chandler, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Luol Deng.

Russell Westbrook received two first team All-Defense votes and Thabo Sefolosha one.

I don't care if he leads the league in steals... Chris Paul being named first team all defense just seems to be rewarding flopping.

Somebody needs to tell Brooks that defense wins championships  He cann't get away with crap like playing Ibaka only 19 minutes against the Spurs. Ibaka has to play BIG minutes against the Spurs or they will cut us to pieces. They are so precise, and will get many layup attempts we have to have Ibaka on the floor to erase as many as those as possible.

This series will be decided by how many minutes Brooks plays Ibaka. Ibaka is going to have to play a lot of minutes for us to win. Its a simple as that. Unfornantly I don't have much faith in Brooks he just loves his small lineup with Fisher too much.

@MostJadedGamer The Spurs are just the kind of team that can exploit Serge's proclivity for roaming on defense and going for the block. I can see them repeatedly goading him into the air to pass past him for an open perimeter shot. He's shown some good discipline in the postseason against Dirk and Pau. He'll need to be even more so against the Spurs.

Thabo didn't play enough this year to earn it. Still talented enough

Thabo Sefalosha is soooo underrated as a defender it's not even funny!!!

@JBrandonMartin  I was very dissapointed in Thabo's defense on Kobe. I couldn't believe how many times Thabo just allowed Kobe to drive all the way to the basket. This series was the poorest defense I have saw him play.

congrats to serge.  blocks capture attention, is he really a better defender than garnett?  or chandler?  probably not.  here's hoping he continues.

Thabo deserves to be on the second team over Kobe.

Also, wtf is up with Chandler on the 2nd team?

Does that mean that Ibaka should've been DPOY?

@BrockSuede voted on by coaches, dpoy is done by media

@f5alcon  Yeah, coaches have to game-plan around Serge and Dwight.  So if the coaches are voting, they know who is intimidating them on the defensive end.

Serge had a great game and destroyed the Kings earlier this year.  When they matched up again, there were almost no Kings players driving into the lane.  It was also laughable how they tried to force extra passes when the ball was near the paint to keep Serge honest.

Chandler is just a big dude in the middle where he helps the overall team defense.  But his presence doesn't give coaches pause about how they execute their offense.
