The officially official ‘Thunderstruck’ trailer

If you’re like me, you had two movies on your cant-wait list for the summer — “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Thunderstruck.” (OK fine, and “Magic Mike” too.) There’s already been a few short trailers out (that were called “official” but whatever), but now here’s the “official” two-minute look at Kevin Durant’s movie.

Oh boy.

It opens Aug. 24.

I had three movies on my summer must-see list: The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers and Thunderstruck. Loved the first two and can't wait for some big screen KD action. I kid you not, I'll be there for a midnight showing. Can't wait! Sure, it's a goofy kids' movie, but it is basically just one huge love letter to the Thunder via celluloid!  @BrockSuede True statement. The first two Nolan Batman films were very good. But this one made me shake my head over and over and over again. These movies are supposed to be grounded in realism. That's what's supposed to make them the cream of the crop of the comic book superhero movie world. But time and again, this movie made no sense and crapped in the face of believability. Just as a few examples...   * How does Batman have his back nearly broken and have a vertebrae sticking out, but some old dude punches him in the back and he's climbing, jumping and fighting a couple months later?   * How does a little girl make that jump when no grown man can?   * How does Batman, a human, dodge machine gun bullets at close range?   * So Bruce Wayne has been living in isolation for 8 years... okay. But why hasn't he seen a doctor about that leg? Why hasn't he checked up on his business, which is running into the ground? What the heck has he been doing for 8 years?   * How come Bruce Wayne gets his power cut off the same night he loses his money? Was he already a month behind on his electric bill at this point?   *I thought the bomb killed anything within a 6 mile radius? The city probably wasn’t six miles away when it exploded. And Batman, even if he put the thing on autopilot, most certainly wasn't 6 miles away.   These are just off the top of my head. My list is much longer.  Listen, if this were a comic book movie that embraced its comic book roots, I'd forgive a lot of that stuff. But these are supposed to be realistic. So I have to judge them like I would a Martin Scorsese or Michael Mann picture. And it fails. Miserably.

@TempBoy Brandon You're confusing "an element of realism" with actual "reality". A Batman movie is not actual reality. If you didn't like it, that's fine. Movie taste is all relative. To each his own, blah blah blah. The gripes you have are nothing that would kill the movie for me or that can't be easily explained away because these aren't big issues and again, it isn't actual reality. If you want a movie of Batman eating every meal, stopping to pee and exposition for every situation and scene shown, then I can tell you this will never happen. This is based on a comic book character, situations and people. This character and story will never be fully grounded in reality.
BrockSuede
2012-08-03 15:42:21
@TempBoy Brandon You can't just write off the flaws for the first two movies, then use them as your reason to not like this one. That doesn't make any sense. Both those movies had plenty of scenes that you could pick apart and question reality. BUT WHY NOT DO THAT THERE, THEN TURN RIGHT AROUND AND DO THAT TO THIS MOVIE?

@ou_sas  @ThunderChick2010  @BrockSuede My non-nerd reasons for not loving the new batman movie.   1. Too long 2. Too much Bruce Wayne, not enough Batman 3. Not enough Catwoman 4. Bain's voice is not believable in the least. Dudes who look like that, DO NOT talk like that. I don't buy it. 5. Either make the plot line believable, or give us an excuse to ignore it. This movie hit the awkward middle. Do I need to pay attention to this whole hostage city for 3 months thing with silly details about bombs and triggermen and radiation life cycles and blah blah blah? Or can I just treat it the same way I treat the plot line that Bain somehow has a bazzillion dollars to pump explosives into concrete for years on end and coordinate massive amounts of man power effort to strategically place all that crap around the city by carefully coordinating with city officials and construction companies and blah blah blah? Which is to say that I chalk all that detail up to the whole "Hey, he's the bad guy - he does bad guy stuff and I don't need to know all that crap". The movie got the Bain plotline right. You just tell me what he did and I'll accept it and move on. The movie got the bomb thing wrong by giving me all this bullcrap detail and I really don't need, landing it in the aforementioned awkward stage.   6. Why are you gonna make Alfred cry and go away? Screw you pal, now I don't like you or the movie you wrote/directed/produced/whatever.    7. Useless cameo by whathisname the judge. He was a bad guy just two movies ago, and now he's a bit part. Boo! Hiss!   The End.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct  @ThunderChick2010  @BrockSuede Re: point 2:   To me, the entire trilogy has been less about Batman and more about Bruce Wayne anyway (bear in mind I haven't seen TDKR yet). It's a series of psychological thrillers posing as superhero movies. They put in defining Batman characteristics, sure, but it seems to revolve more around Wayne and his struggles morally with what he's doing and what he needs to do.

BrockSuede
2012-08-03 16:47:10
@Jax Raging Bile Duct  Again, movies are all relative and to each his own, but someday Jax, when you re-watch the movie, you'll see it actually explains why Bain has money and help and can do the things he does. Just like @ou_sas said, the movies are more about Bruce Wayne than Batman so it makes sense to have more of him and less Dark Knight. I agree about more Ann Hathaway latex awesomeness. The inspiration for Bane's voice comes from a gypsy bare-knuckle fighter called Bartley Gorman. He actually did look and sound like the dude in the film. I love Alfred, but for Bruce/Bats to complete his journey in the film, he had to go. Last thing, Cillian Murphy is fantastic and needed to be in this because, logically, he's still alive in the last movie. Why not make him the judge?

@BrockSuede  And I realize where the dough came from, but my point is that it isn't important. Remember that scene in "Thank You for Smoking" where Rob Lowe was talking about a commercial where a guy was smoking in outer space? Here, let me quote it for you.   Jeff Megall: Sony has a futuristic sci-fi movie they're looking to make.  Nick Naylor: Cigarettes in space?  Jeff Megall: It's the final frontier, Nick.  Nick Naylor: But wouldn't they blow up in an all oxygen environment?  Jeff Megall: Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. 'Thank God we invented the... you know, whatever device.'    What I'm saying is that the movie basically summed up the Bain logistics by using one line of dialogue - their 'whatever device', and I was cool with it. No need for details. But the bomb stuff carried on and on and on and a million years later we're still talking about bomb and hostage stuff and then finally the end.   I didn't hate the movie. I'm not trying to say that it was artistically inferior or whatever. I'm just saying I was underwhelmed.

@ou_sas  @OBoymuzik True DC only really has 7 good heroes, then the rest are just sequels and repeats

@ThunderChick2010  @TempBoy Brandon  @BrockSuede  @ou_sas  @Jax Raging Bile Duct Ha! I think that's awesome. Yep, I always put a rating at the end, and my friends and I always grade on a scale of 1 to 10 as well! Movie nerd high five!!

@jdstorm  @OBoymuzik Yeah, at least if you stick with their mainline heroes. I suppose if you go with Teen Titans or something (tone down the epic-ness of their main JLA crew), you might have a better selection. But Marvel's milieu is much more varied.

@TempBoy Brandon  @ThunderChick2010  @BrockSuede  @ou_sas  @Jax Raging Bile Duct Why is it that if you rate something out of 10 to one decimal place, you get a different rating than if you did it out of 100%? Me and my best friend are always puzzled by this

@jdstorm  @ThunderChick2010  @BrockSuede  @ou_sas  @Jax Raging Bile Duct Awesome! I just read and approved the comment. Thank you much for reading and for the comment. I'm at a friend's right now, but when I get home later tonight, I am gonna write out a reply on my blog. Would love to continue the convo going on there.

@ou_sas  @OBoymuzik The problem i have is that there are only so many character Archetypes. With marvel most of the characters feel unique enough, and they generally reside in different circles. With DC because most new heroes are some old heroes protégée it feels tired.

@jdstorm  @OBoymuzik I think a lot of the problem comes with the fact that most DC characters are from the Golden age, whereas the Marvel superheroes almost all are from the Silver age. As such, there's a slightly more evolved sense of balance between all of the different groups, especially since it's the same writer-penciler duo working on all of the different marvel series, rather than a whole group of different people responsible for the core DC heroes.

@BrockSuede True Story: I thought Batman Begins was not that good and TDKR was the best of the three. I am the only person in ever who thinks this way though

Sorry to bring it back to batman again for a sec-- I agree with Jax about Bain's voice, though it's not so much that his voice was unbelievable, it was more that the actual audio was insane. Why does his voice have to be in SURROUND SOUND? Nobody else's voice was. I understand that the filmmakers were trying to make him into the baddest of all, and they did a good job of that for the most part (except his puppy dog relation to Miranda Tate-- though she's very puppy dog-able), but it sounded ludicrous.   Back on topic though: I wish I was like Kevin Durant too!

Apparently the scene in the practice gym took over 100 takes, the director kept stressing for KD to miss a couple shots but he made close to 300 3pointers in a row.

@cleandoe  @TempBoy Brandon  @BrockSuede  @ou_sas  @Jax Raging Bile Duct Okay, Son, not really sure what you're asking . . . It's just our silly way of fine tuning.  For example, not all 6.5s are created equally.  One might be more of a 6.52 while another is a 6.59.  (If you want to talk strictly percentages, a 6.5 would translate to a 65%.)  Are you sorry you asked yet?   :)

@FREE_COLE  It's starting to overtake TDK as the best for me too. Also this article: http://theerstwhilephilistine.com/2012/08/01/tis-a-far-far-batter-thing-the-sneaky-influence-of-a-tale-of-two-cities-on-the-dark-knight-rises/ made me like it even more so. Check it out

Ou_sas, you're pretty good at directing traffic between threads--and it seems we have a split going on tonight.  It probably makes more sense to stay here if we're talking movies, but guess it doesn't really matter.  You should call it!
