Thoughts KD on the Howard deal? ‘I really don’t care’

by Royce Young on August 10, 2012 at 6:20 pm 387 Comments

The first person people wanted to talk to after Team USA smoked Argentina was Kobe Bryant. The second? Probably Kevin Durant.

Not because he was the leading scorer yet again, but because the blockbuster Dwight Howard trade appears to have a significant impact on his team. What appeared to be a wide open road back to the NBA Finals now how a pretty big roadblock in the way in the form of Howard’s shoulders.

What are KD’s feelings after the deal? How does he think the Thunder match up? What’s he thinking?

So he was asked if he had any thoughts on the trade and Durant answered the question exactly as you’d expect.

“Nah,” he said. “I really don’t care.”

You might think that’s just Durant trying to dust off the big deal and ignore the ramifications of it on the Western Conference. But nah, that’s just KD being KD. He’s confident in his group and the Thunder mentality is to just handle their business, play their game and that should be enough no matter what other teams put together.

The Thunder have a challenger, a formidable foe that’s going to make the West much more interesting this season. But Durant and the Thunder don’t care. Unless Howard was traded to his team, it’s just a ripple in the water to him.

Last time I checked Nash was 38 years old. I read a great article about Nash and the trade when it happened and to summarize; Nash is what he is because he looks to score first, pass second and he has the ball in his hands 95% of the time. Not sure that works on the Lakers. Didn't work for Stoudemire or Johnson either. Oh and did i mention he is 38?

AlexanderWest24
AlexanderWest24 5pts

@Treviedo dude how can you say nash looks to score first. That makes me believe you dont watch basketball. Oh and that 38 year old avergaed 12 points and 11 assists last year. He'll probably average 15 assists this year when the lakers are running dust circles around the thunder and the rest of the league.

i haven't read the commentating section all of the off-season because im taking the assumption that 95% will be irrelevant when the season starts, but am i the only one who thinks Spurs are going to be just as much of a challenge as the Lakers this upcoming season?

TaoMaas
TaoMaas 5pts

@MrRaysian   No, I don't think you're the only one who is worried about the Spurs...and  you're right to do so.   Heck, I haven't forgotten the Clippers or the Grizzlies, either...not to mention the T-Wolves, who are also improving...and Iggy going to the Nuggets makes them stronger, as well.  Yeah, it's going to be an interesting season.  I think this coming year, more than previous years, will really put Presti's genius to the test.  He's gambled on Jones, Thabeet, Orton, and (earlier) Aldrich...not to mention Lat Williams and Pleiss.  If he 'hits' on a couple of those gambles, we're good.  While watching yesterday's Olympic game, I couldn't help but wonder if Tyson Chandler might still be on Presti's back burner.  He could be the antidote to the Lakers getting Howard.  Regardless, the pressure really isn't on the Thunder to make a move until we know whether we can sign Harden, Ibaka, or both.

@TaoMaas  @MrRaysian Don't forgot a halfway decent coach. Nice to see somebody else thinks Iggy to the Nuggets is something to be worried about. How the hell did Orlando agree to this steaming pile and still get left holding that terrible Turkeyglue contract.

I'm kind of glad we get to fly under the radar again and just take care of business. Obviously Dwight Howard and the Lakers are not to be overlooked, they'll be good. But I am perfectly fine with the media attention and pressure to perform going elsewhere while we just do what we do; play Thunder basketball and win games.

"If anything the pure raw talent of this team is being wasted"

That's really what it all comes down to.  Harden has to start, there really isn't any argument against it at this point.  Also I fear Brook's complete inability to correctly use utility type players like Perkins, Thabo and Fischer will always be an anchor on this team.

TaoMaas
TaoMaas 5pts

@Hoplophobia    Of course we remember Hack-A-Splitter.  The question is, do you think the Lakers remember it?  Because now, Hack-A-Howard might become a legitimate way to nullify the Lakers biggest off-season acquisition at the end of close games.

Old Man Game

@Hoplophobia I think @SeanzieCrews was just looking for a silver lining, not actually indicating its good as far as on court to have to deal with Howard and Gasol with Nash feeding them and Kobe to boot.

Hoplophobia
Hoplophobia 5pts

@Old Man Game The original poster was saying how it was good that the pressure was off the Thunder because the Lakers got better.

That's ridiculous on it's face. The Thunder went to the NBA Finals. They may not be able to keep this group together much longer outside of KD and Westbrook. There is plenty of pressure on this team to win. Any team that says "We'll just keeping playing Thunder/Pacer/Whatever basketball" is basically saying "Because we got to the NBA Finals we'll just keep doing what we did." Is in my mind  a recipe for disaster.  Just being faster and more athletic and slashing to the basket does not work so well when there is a credible defender in the middle.

O O O O O O
O O O O O O 5pts

@Hoplophobia  thunder basketball to me is an apositional brand of fast efficient basketball that doesnt necessarily need to score from the post because of the ability of three top tier scorers to get points at the rim and free throw line. thunder basketball is its own early stages of development. We havent inserted harden into the starting lineup and only in the post season, experienced him as a player that could close out games and be a part of a crunch time offense. When that happens, in our way, we'll have another 48 minutes of hell on hands. This could all be improved with some more movement off the ball, and the realisation that westbrook durant and harden can all work for each other to get baskets. I'm almost sure they could figure this out for themselves, and hope that scott brooks realises it before they do, so we can get an actual halfcourt offense installed, as it stands though, we still have one of the best offenses in basketball. Thunderball is dangerous from all areas on the court, players have to be long and athletic on both offense and defense, and should cause as many turnovers as possible for fast break opportunities. Thunderball is having 3 playmakers on the court the entire time, players that create for themselves and others giving defenses a fit cos of the amount of options they have to defend. We have the personnel to beat any team in the league, and even though they didn't come in a flashy trade, we have the talent to beat any team in the league. lol idk if we have the coach though, the defense needs to shore up, and the lineups have to be managed better, but thats what being positive gets you, you can hopeee brooks improves.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Hoplophobia  Well yeah if you want to get into talking about inept Thunder coaching you'll have plenty of agreement here. But to your original point I don't think bringing up the Pacers is really that apt of an analogy. The Thunder are legit title contenders having made the conference finals and now the NBA finals in consecutive years. The Pacers are and were at most a dark horse type of pick to even make the Eastern Conference finals let alone win it all.

Hoplophobia
Hoplophobia 5pts

@mb22 I guess being realistic is now being 'Negative Nancy'. What exactly is "Thunder Basketball?" A near complete inability to score in the post, running the same bad halfcourt set that inevitably break down and ends up with a contested bailout shot from K.D. or Westbrook that somehow manage to go in more than they should which makes everybody look like a genius.

Am I the only person that remembers Hack-A-Splitter in game 2 against the Spurs? If anything the pure raw talent of this team is being wasted. It pains me to watch it every time they come down the floor with the ball. Russel gets blamed when things break down and he has to make something happen. It's all on him to do everything and make everything happen. Sometimes it feels like the guy that only bothers to set a proper screen is Collison. I could go one and on and on but that would make me even more negative.

It's amusing to watch all the people that flamed me for questioning the Thunder's offseason moves and daring to question the draft pick suddenly scared of Dwight Howard and the Lakers. Welcome to the big leagues, where the best teams can make mistake after mistake, but then pick up A+ free agents and the Thunder have to fight for scraps and struggle to keep their own players who other teams are already courting. The Thunder can not afford to have an "okay" offseason and overpay a mediocre coach, they will start falling behind.

To face facts, last year was probably the Thunder's best chance of winning a Title. Harden or Ibaka will leave unless Durant and Westbrook agree to take less going forward. The Heat were not as good as they could of been last year because of a lackluster supporting cast. The Lakers will take some time to gel, but in the end will be a major obstacle, perhaps even better than the Thunder. The Heat are a better team than the Thunder. and got better with Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis.

To Recap:

1)The team that beat the Thunder got much better.

2)A major competitor got as good as or better.

3)The Thunder signed Hasheem Thabeet and overpaid a coach.

@Hoplophobia I agree. Fans are on the Kool aid too much. We have to get over this whole only signing choir boys and being scared to go over the tax bullshit if we want to win. In fact, it is essential. If we don't have a title by 2016, KD leaves, I guarantee it, and probably to LA

@DennisBerry  let's just imagine that durant was in okc all by himself with eleven other x players and in a few seasons we traded some of those x players for russell westbrook, who has maintained the same level of production in his actual career, we'd be super excited. Then let's take some a few of the other x players and turn them into james harden, who let's say was on someone else's bench and won 6th man last year as well, we'd say wow we have our own legitimate big three, this is really exciting. but of course we cant have x playing at power forward, so lets trade x for the leading shot blocker in the league all nba defense and second leading vote getter in dpoy. now we've bought ourselves a championship. espn is lauding the haul of the century, players who are performing at exceedingly high levels at incredibly young ages have all been traded to oklahoma city. does presti stop there? no. he has a bench to fill. he trades x for one of the better back up pgs in the league, another x for one of these bench players in the league in nick collison, another x for an elite wing defender, he fucks up and trades an x for kendrick perkins but that's okay. and then on top of all that a top five talent x in perry jones falls into our laps, who plays just the style and position to unlock all of our most devastating lineups. this okc team has made all the right trades and has all the hype of the trade machine to have the entire league in a frenzy, who can ever beat this team????     that's what we have, im good.  lol. i posted this on another post, but i think its still relevant.

ThunderUppppppp

@DennisBerry those "also rans" happened to be cap-friendly contracts to allow us to be able to hang on to some combination of Harden, Ibaka, and Maynor next season. In a tight-money offseason we were able to haul in Jones III, who was once a top 5 talent and presented the biggest steal of the draft at #28 other than Sullinger to Boston. We brought in Thabeet, who was once a #2 overall pick, so somebody must have seen something in him, Scott Brooks and Maurice Cheeks are great coaches to get the most out of him, he didn't really cost anything if he doesn't pan out for us, and I'm sorry but was any player really going to thrive in Houston last year? Hollis Thompson and Reggie Jackson looked great in the summer league, and best of all, we get a healthy Maynor back, who many consider to be one of the best backup PGs in the league.

we may not have signed any big name "actual contributors" but we didn't really need to. where exactly would this year's big name free agents have fit on this team? D-Will or Nash? We've got Westbrook. Eric Gordon? We've got Harden. Sure, Hibbert or Brook Lopez would be a great upgrade over Perkins, but we don't have the salary cap space. A Howard trade would have been great, but just like Miami did a few years ago when LeBron, Wade, and Bosh all came together on big contracts, taking on a Howard long-term contract would mean dumping our whole current bench (arguably one of the best in the league) and signing a bunch of cheap players in order to afford him, let alone having to trade away Harden/Ibaka, Jones III, Maynor, and picks just in the trade alone.

Sorry, but I think you're forgetting that we have some pretty great "actual contributors" on the roster already.

Sustainable Parameters
Sustainable Parameters 5pts

@mb22 Yea our big 3 are great. no argument from me there. I lovr what Collison brings and Thabo although he has to stop passing up open shots. Beyond them, lots of trash and wasted space. We have like 5 guys on our roster who are barely, if at all, proven NBA caliber players. Cole sucks so bad we would rather play a cripple Kendrick Perkins than have him see minutes. I still don't get what Hayward was bought in for. So I got an idea, let's sign 2 more terrible centers and a duplicate rookie talent to another guy on our roster, who himself is somewhat of a disappointment

TaoMaas
TaoMaas 5pts

@DennisBerry    You're forgetting the main reason the Lakers re-tooled their lineup and the Thunder didn't..  The Lakers HAD to go find contributors or else they were never going to catch the Thunder.    Until the Howard trade, the Lakers hadn't done anything to cause any worry for the Thunder.

@DennisBerry OKC didn't/doesn't have the money to go get as you say "actual contributors." This is a helluva a good team, and only getting better. You're thinking in the mind frame that last season every player peaked, while in actuality most of the team is still ascending to their peek.
