Thunder enter preseason at 9/2 odds to win the title

by Royce Young on October 9, 2012 at 12:12 pm 74 Comments

Via Bovada, the Thunder have been installed as a 9/2 favorite to win the NBA title this season, behind the Heat (11/5) and the Lakers (5/2).

Here’s what manager of the Bovada sportsbook Kevin Bradley says: “Looking at our NBA championship odds, one thing really stands out and that is that only three teams are under 10-1 to win it all and is pretty much a three horse race with the Heat favored to repeat at 11/5, the Lakers at 5/2, and the Thunder at 9/2. Even at these short odds these three teams have taken the most money along with the Boston Celtics who we opened at 25-1 who I have now dropped down to 18-1.”

The Thunder are at 9/5 to win the West, again behind the Lakers at 13/10. Oklahoma City’s over/under win total is set at 59.5, tied with the Lakers and behind the Heat (61).

After the jump, all the odds:

I think we do win title just like Miami did.  Losing the year before and winning it the next.  Without  any injuries of course

Sure, i'm biased, but I honestly feel this is the year we win the west, KD wins MVP, and we take the title. KD and russ are the best, most competitive, tandem in the league and ever since the conference finals it has been clear that nobody in the world can stop Kevin when wants to score. Durant may not have shown it too much this summer, but that guy is dying for another title shot. Lebron is the best player in the game, but I'll take a motivated KD over a relaxed LBJ any day of the week.

1. Was Presti surprised by the Heat and Lakers improvements?

2. Doesn't seem like he adjusted his strategy or action at all to date. Vegas thinks the Thunder chances have slipped considerably based on moves to date.

3. Will he later? What would it take? Does he wait til trade deadline or next summer?

4. If he changes, what should he change or at least try to?

@Crow I must be the only one on this thread that believe Presti knocked out the park?

You realize OKC has 7 options at the 4/5 position.  Let the Hack-a-Dwight BEGIN!

@We_Talkin_Bout_Practice? i hope at least one of the bench centers (besides collison) play well enough to be able to play meaningful playoff time if needed.

still have to see who is on the roster in november and late feb.

 @Crow

Presit didnt have a choice. All our efforts had to go into resigning Ibaka, and Harden PERIOD

Crow

yes those are priorities but there is still room for other attempts with other assets on a cost neutral or favorable basis with regard to salary cap.

1) No

2) didnt want to change his plan, Vegas only reacts to changes

3) I think he will. Thats why he hired an advances statistics guy. (Bball money ball?) not this year.

4) Trade for and exploit a mid level tallented veteran  on a rebuilding team such a LMA and dump Perk, cook, maynor, and picks to appease them ( not jackson or PJ3)

I  would only look for those deals that are based on the need of the other team and not ours. we are set but can be better.

@Crow Mayberry seems to think we will trade Harden at the deadline if no deal is done by the 31st.  That would be very interesting if we are on a roll, and top the standings.  How will we all react?

Crow
Crow 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@dream catcher an immediate deal of Harden would almost have to include Perkins to get decent immediate value as opposed to mainly draft picks.

@OBoymuzik  @ou_sas  @Crow Bynum's already hurt. But they probably don't have much reason to take him on with Spencer Hawes capable of playing C. Chicago would do this though.

@Crow Gasol is really interesting, too bad Memphis guards are weak. I would do Perk+ Harden for Gasol and maybe a draft pick and then see if we need to deal maynor for a better backup 2

@ou_sas  @Crow  @dream catcher Hayes was recovering from a major medical condition last year. He probably will improve.

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ATH  @Crow  @dream catcher Hayes is a step backwards from Perkins. Last year posted a 109 defensive rating (vs. 103 for Perk), averaged fewer points and rebounds per 36, and shot a lower ts%. And Thornton would inevitably be a step back from Harden. As a cost saving measure, makes sense, but our team would probably be downgrading both positions.

ATH
ATH 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Crow I think Ibaka could play center next to Taj Gibson. That would be awesome.

@ou_sas  @dream catcher Probably would want to try for taj gibson, amir johnson, udoh or marc gasol in the deal with other stuff, based on RAPM impact.

@ou_sas  @Crow  @dream catcher Harden/Perk for Chuck Hayes and Marcus Thornton?

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts

@Crow  @dream catcher Do you have any thoughts as far as teams that would be willing to give us a defensive center as part of a Harden-Perkins deal? Because otherwise you're looking at a defense anchored by Serge, Collison, or Aldrich at Center.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@dream catcher i really can't see an immediate trade but i hadn't even thought about it til now.

Crow

easiest thing to change is the starting lineup and / or amount of minutes given to it vs the top 1-3 alternatives.

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Crow Possible thought (this year only) might be for Thabo to play less frequently and play an EM-RJ 2nd unit back court more frequently with Harden starting.

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts

@f5alcon  @Crow Hopefully Brooks will have confidence in Maynor, Reggie and PJ to actually try things. It seems like the reason he stuck with his rotations on Fisher is an unwillingness to rely on his other guard options.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@Crow  @ou_sas Brooks needs to be more flexible with the situation, instead of same rotations all of the time, he has shown times where he will do that, but it needs to be more consistent. If we are having problems scoring put an offensive lineup in, if we cant stop them, go more defensive, incorporate some zone maybe to break the opponents flow. We have more options this year, PJIII, maynor, reggie, cook.

Crow
Crow 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@ou_sas about +19 per 100 possessions. 5th most used last season but barely over 100 minutes for the season. did well in playoffs but hardly used.

just for special occasions? wrong strategy i think. should be used lots lots more to test its real strength.

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts

@Crow Agreed. Do you have +/- numbers on a Westbrook-Harden-KD-Collison-Ibaka lineup? (Or do they prefer Ibaka-Collison?)

Crow
Crow 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ou_sas more collison and more collison-harden and more collison-harden with the other starters would seem to help. it is needed in the playoffs but maybe it is needed in the regular season more to convice Brooks.

So for the playoff they have the seeds as

LA L@kers

OKC( Best team in the  world) Thunder

Spurs

Clippers

Dallas

Memphis

Denver

Houston

Do we like this bracket ?   Denver> Memphis/Clippers > Spurs/ L@kers  > Heat

Is this as hard as last years route?

JustPlainNASTY
JustPlainNASTY 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Bsooreal  @kers I'd say it might be a little harder due to the fact that the Lakers got better and the Clippers(Who always seem to beat us somehow) gained experience last year. Hopefully the Spurs aren't as much of a threat this year though. Denver might be a little improved too

MostJadedGamer

No way Houston makes the playoffs, and Minnsota will obviously make the playoffs if they stay healthy.

@Bsooreal  @kers Denver I am not overly concerned about until I see how they have played come early March. Clippers seem to give us fits, but I am hoping that changes this year. Spurs/Lakers... they'll be tough but I'm confident.
