Free agency is underway in the NBA, and the Thunder are expected to be somewhat active, at least in the sense they’ll make the necessary calls to canvas the market.
First, according to the Los Angeles Times, the Thunder will have a meeting with Pau Gasol. Exciting, but pump those brakes just a bit. Gasol is a pretty prime free agent that could command somewhere in the $8-12 million range, meaning unless he’s offering the Thunder a severe discount, he’s probably out of their reach. There’s a feeling that really, it’s mostly a leverage move to try and increase interest from other contenders. Also reportedly interested: Warriors, Bulls and possibly the Lakers.
The other: According to Tim McMahan of ESPN Dallas, the Thunder have interest in Vince Carter. No big surprise as Carter is a decent veteran free agent looking to latch on to a contender in his twilight years. He’s 37, but is coming off back-to-back seasons where he missed only a combined two games. The Thunder are looking for insurance at 2-guard, someone to rely upon if Jeremy Lamb and Andre Roberson aren’t quite ready. Carter averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 24.4 minutes per game last season. Also reportedly interested: Heat, Trail Blazers and Raptors.
