OKC the ‘most likely’ landing spot for Hasheem Thabeet?

Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty Images

According to Sam Amick of SI.com:

First the Perry Jones “gamble,” now Hasheem Thabeet? Source says Oklahoma City is the most likely landing spot for the 7-3 center who was taken No. 2 by Memphis in 2009 and will be playing for his fourth team (assuming he doesn’t sign with Portland, Houston or the Griz).

Thabeet is an unrestricted free agent and likely wouldn’t command much of a deal. The Thunder have always been interested in taking a flyer on Thabeet, even coming close to working a deal for him a couple years ago while he was still in Memphis. The Thunder feel strongly that put in their program, Thabeet still has the tools to develop into something worthwhile.

There’s something to be said for a 7-3 guy that was taken second overall, especially when you’re talking a minimum level kind of contract for him likely to just practice and work. And in the Thunder culture based around development and growth, maybe Thabeet could finally realize a little of that talent he has. People are the league have told me that Thabeet isn’t a knucklehead. He just hasn’t had the kind of work ethic necessary to make it in the NBA.

It’s a very low risk, high reward kind of move. Thabeet wouldn’t cost much, and with veteran Nazr Mohammed a free agent, OKC either needs to re-sign him or will be in the market for a new backup, or third string big, assuming Cole Aldrich steps into the rotation.

Consider this too: A veteran minimum salary for Nazr Mohammed would be about $1.4M and he might not even take a minimum. OKC can likely sign Thabeet for less than that. A minimum salary for Thabeet would be about $1 million a year.

Obviously with every penny spent, everyone wonders how this might impact the future of the roster, but you have to fill out a team. You have to make sure you have the right players to put on the floor. And again, the major salary concerns don’t necessarily hit until next season.

If Aldrich is truly ready to become OKC’s backup center — and I think he is — then the Thunder need a third big. It could be Mohammed, who likely would be fine remaining in OKC, but Thabeet is opportunity to take a shot at developing something for the future. Plus, probably cheaper.

@supreme35  Too much stock is put into "Thunder type" imo.   Howard is awesome. He's the best center of this generation, and he'll keep being the best center in the league for many years to come. He's an inside scoring presence. He's a great rebounder.   Furthermore, I think that the most important part of the Thunder-culture is KD; he's the one who leads that stuff.

Seriously? Here is what really happened. When the Magic were in San Antonio for their final game before the trade deadline, officials from the organization had the necessary waiver paperwork in hand. Howard addressed his teammates at the team hotel the morning of the game, told them he was "all in," and wanted to sign the papers. Team officials wanted him to focus on the game and deal with the issue when they returned to Orlando. On the flight home, sources said, Howard still wanted to sign the waiver. Team officials didn't feel comfortable with Howard signing the paperwork that would end the trade saga without Howard's agent, Dan Fegan, or some other legal representative present. When the team landed in Orlando in the middle of the night, Smith drove to the airport to greet the flight. Howard again indicated he wanted to sign the waiver, but Smith -- with whom Howard had grown close -- told him he didn't want such an important and meaningful decision about his future to be made on some tarmac at 3 a.m. They agreed that Howard should go home and sleep on it. He showed up at the Magic practice facility the next day -- hours before the trade deadline -- and signed the waiver. Does that sound like blackmail to you? Does that sound like coercion?

If they want to practice making layups over a 7-3 guy, ok.   Presti might be a little fascinated with draft numbers. The best thing Hayward had going for him was that he was a 1st rounder. The best thing Thabeet has going for him is that he was a former #2 pick.   If this at all makes it easier to trade Perkins, go for it.

I personally feel that any move this team makes in the near future should be looked at in terms of whether or not it could help us in a finals rematch against miami. Although Thabeet would likely play next to zero minutes, having someone REALLY tall to put on the court for 5 minutes to pick up fouls and/or challenge lebron at the rim doesn't seem like a bad thing. If things go really well he allows us to amnesty perk to make resigning guys easier. If he's cheap I say go for it

So say you sign Thabeet, you'll sign him to something really cheap and short term like what maybe 1-2 years. Then he goes in your program and low and behold whataya know despite all prior evidence, he starts showing signs of life. By the time he's showing said signs of life wouldn't he his deal be over or close to over and then he's a 7'3" guy with some ability, can you even afford to resign him then? Basically, why develop him on your dime? And you can't sign him to anything long term because most likely he won't amount to anything and then you've got a boat anchor on your bench.

@Old Man Game The argument would be you get him in, develop him, and hopefully he can replace Perkins in two years and save you some money.  We probably need a 3rd center, so why not take someone with some upside?   That said, I don't buy into the, "get him in the system and he'll change" argument anyways.  People don't change for the most part.  And I'll always remember these two tweets from two years ago coming within 10 minutes of each other...   3:50 p.m.: Hasheem Thabeet says: "Late LUNCH before i go for a NAP!!! Mhmmmm Yummy." 4:00 p.m.: Kevin Durant says: "Good workout..worked on ballhandling, finishing thru contact, pull up jumpers, pick n rolls, and making tough shots with a man on me!!...!"   Guys who don't want to work, don't want to work.  They're more likely to resent others that work hard than they are to see others working hard and want to join in.  But it really doesn't matter much.  It'll probably be for so little money that it won't matter.  It's just the 3rd center spot.  Nazr, Thabeet, whatever.

@diddoff I don't know.  The Blazers very reluctantly gave him the $8 million qualifying offer last year, and they had so much more invested in the guy than anyone else.  Not to mention I believe they scaled that number back eventually after another injury.  If he could get over $5 million, then the Thunder couldn't sign him anyways.

If you're criticizing people for criticizing the Thabeet move, but you're also on the trade Harden and/or Harden is a fraud... just look at the Finals bandwagon, please go away.  For good.   And I would assume people who don't like the Thabeet move don't like it because of his attitude and how he would fit in with the culture moreso than what he's going to cost (nothing), his upside (meh), or the role he's going to have on the team (3rd string).  I am somewhere in the completely ambivalent to mildly intrigued range with regard to the Thabeet signing.

From Hollinger's article on 2012 value free agents:   "Hasheem Thabeet, Portland: OK, let me end this with the most far-out suggestion of all: I still think Thabeet can be a productive NBA big man, and he'll probably be available on a minimum contract this summer. Clearly, picking him second overall three years ago was a bit overenthusiastic, and whatever team gets him will have to nurture some shaken confidence. But he has an overwhelming NBA skill with a career average of 3.3 blocks per 40 minutes, he finishes shots around the basket, and he can make a 10-footer.    When you tick off those skills it doesn't sound too dissimilar from Brandan Wright, actually -- another long, slender big man who was pounded by big centers but found a niche playing in zones. Thabeet's value will be in those alignments as well, and at 7-3 he'll be an imposing figure if he can stay close to the basket."   Minimum contract with upside potential at the hardest position to find contributors. What's not to like?   Get over the past. Memphis spent a #2 pick overall and wasted $15 million on Thabeet. That's their failure. OKC is not spending any assets to acquire him, and he's only costing the minimum.

Overall it's ambivalence if he's signing for the min for a year or with a team option for a second year (or unguaranteed second year). I'd rather fill the spot with a better player or maintain flexibility, but it's whatever. He'll sit on the bench, come up with some handshakes and play less than 200 minutes the whole season. Meh.

Just watched every minute of the three Big 12 tournament games that Baylor played this year against Kansas State, Kansas and Missouri. PJ3 observations:   1) He's definitely a hard worker. Ran back hard in defensive transition every time. Rotated correctly on defense. Set numerous screens for the dribbler.   2) He's versatile. Agile enough to hedge hard on the screen and switch onto the ball-handler without creating a mis-match (how Thunder played Tony Parker) and also big enough to play center in Baylor's defense (bothering Thomas Robinson into a poor performance).   3) Best offensive plays: a) catching alley-oops, would have gotten more with better point guard play; b) excellent finishing in transition; c) quick post-ups against smaller players, the guy's basically a 7-footer with a soft touch.   4) Weak jump shot off the dribble. Shouldn't be forced to create offense by himself.   5) Big but lacking in strength. Boxed out correctly but was often manhandled by stronger players for offensive rebounds. Must get stronger.   Summary: PJ3 is considered a disappointment because he didn't turn out to be the next Tracy McGrady. He can't create his own shot under pressure (very few NBA players can consistently). But I see many positives. PJ3 should become an elite finisher in transition, a solid rebounder, an opportunistic scorer off of cuts to the basket, and a very good defender.

@FREE_COLE  @DXL KD can be a dominant rebounder at times, so guys with his body type CAN do it. I guess I just don't see why PJ3 will become a good rebounder when he hasn't really shown that yet. I mean, other than having the competitive will power and determination that KD has, but I'm not giving that to the kid just yet. He's going to have to earn that.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct  @DXL Well an underrated thing was the way baylor made him play.  In the Kansas game he was guarding Thomas Robinson. He won't be guarding Robinson's in the NBA.   I also think it should be noted that KD has steadily improved as he has put on more weight.  Coming in he averaged only 4.5 rebounds his first year, now KD is at 7.5. I don't expect the same from PJ3 given different minutes, but I do think we can reasonably expect 4 rebounds per game.

@Jokazc I'm not sure, PJ3 is really unique. He's plays like Paul George or Tayshaun Prince, but he's got a full-size PF body (Ibaka size).   He's going to kill in transition offense, that I'm sure of. Doesn't really block that many shots, which is surprising.

@FREE_COLE  But I wouldn't call 4 rebounds a game 'good'. And he could be guarding Robinson in the league since both of them will play as much time at the 4 as they'll play at any position. PJ3 at the 3 is a nice thought, but I just don't think that's realistic for more than a minute or two here and there. Today's 3 need to be able to create their own shot or at least initiate some offense. PJ3 has a nice handle for his size, and can pass the ball a little bit, but he can't create or initiate anything. Or I shouldn't say can't... I just don't expect him to be able to.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct  @FREE_COLE I'm not sure he'll be asked to create his own shot when playing the 3. It's going to be a a lot of Russ, KD and Harden ball domination. I think any time at the 3, he'd just be asked to cut and set screens, at least to start.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct PJ3 will likely be a bench guy with us playing limited minutes.  3-4 rebounds is around my estimate for him this year if he plays which I think he should. He'll be going against bench 4s who aren't going to be as athletic as he is outside some rare cases

@thunderatom   @Lost Ones  @Jax Raging Bile Duct He's definitely going to be good rebounder in the NBA. College rebounding statistics translate well. If he plays 35 minutes a game in the NBA he'll get close to 7 rebounds. He's got all the tools.   Part of the PJ3 perception of passivity: he doesn't give hard fouls. He tries to defend without fouling and by using his length (sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't).
Jooseppi
2012-07-01 16:41:46
@Lost Ones If his job is teaching our point guards "point guard things" or perimeter defense he hasn't succeeded. This isn't a "Russ isn't a point guard post!" or anything but if that has been what Cheeks has been trying to do, it hasn't work.

@FREE_COLE Understood on the bench minutes, but those come in all varieties. I'm saying I'd be ecstatic if he gets 7 boards per 36. I realize that he'll be lucky to play half that, so I suppose that would be about 4. So we're agreed. If PJ3 grabs 4 boards in 16-18 minutes a game, he'll be above average at rebounding.   I still wanna see him do it though.

Give him 6 fouls and tell him its okay to put his body on someone, and i think he'll be alright.

justin_mia
2012-07-01 17:39:17
@jdstorm I think Durant and Thabo did fine on LeBron in game one and two.  Game one was a good defensive game.  Game two was only poor defensively because our starters got thwacked when Spoelstra put Bosh in for Haslem.  In game two, Miami scored 35 points in the 14 minutes that their starters played to begin each half. 2.5 points per minute. They scored 1.9 points per minute the rest of the game.  Our defense was fine on the Heat the first two games aside from when Miami had their small lineup against our starters.   After Game 2 and KD's foul trouble, Brooks completely changed the defense and we struggled a lot after.
jdstorm
2012-07-01 17:41:05

jdstorm
2012-07-01 18:28:23
@areayewhy A combination of both. Its not a scientific stats based system. I Also get that some of my theories seem unconventional, though a less kind person might call them stupid. I'm usually right more than i am wrong.    I Still think standing height is important, because obscuring a players view with your body/head is important and longer wingspans generally also mean reduced strength.

@Jooseppi  @jdstorm isnt that near to how the later soccer positions were created tho? the styles became so defined that they had to be named? im sure there wasnt a center attacking midfielder until there was a midfielder that attacked the center so often that it became a style, and then others followed suit, eventually creating a position.

2012-07-01 18:37:27
@thunderatom   @jdstorm It was more team tactics. and changes in the rules that formed most positions in soccer. Teams played two defenders a century. As rules changed and players got better you couldn't get away with that, so players moved back. And soccer has the same issue: you could describe 30 different "positions" if you wanted. Even just for forwards who play in the middle of the field, you have false nines, center forwards, second strikers, poachers, deep-lying forwards, target men etc.

@FREE_COLE Fair enough. However OKC's most effective Lineup against miami was Russ, Beard, Thabo, KD and a Big.    Defensively this left Russ v Wade, because harden is a bad defender. Thabo v lebron and KD v either haslem or bosh.    An extra SF would allow you to rotate that lineup Swapping out Thabo for another player whenever he got into foul trouble. Thabo with more rest and less foul worries could defend much harder, as there would be no relative disadvantage when he left the court.

@Jooseppi  @thunderatom  I prefer a theory that a players offensive role relative to their specific skills don't really matter.  @thunderatom  I think the NBA is fine as far as rules with the athletes. The biggest thing is officiating them. As players get baster and stronger and more clever officiating gets harder and harder. See the players that sneak an extra half step when they stop their dribble by bringing the ball up high. Basketball caught on early when players like Mikan and Kurland could just stand there and keep shots out of the rim. Athleticism has increased and made the game more up and down but it's still mostly the same game they were playing.

@Jooseppi i think the nba is fine with its rules too, but i thinks thats why there might be positions just under their noses. Soccer had those huge impact rule changes that clearly defined new positions while the nba doesn't, so we see somebody like russell with a world of responsibility that he can shoulder because of his athleticism and skill. he has the scoring responsibility of a shooting guard and the playmaking responsibility of a point guard, and a style all his own, but all this gets summed up as either shoot first point guard or combo guard, and i guess combo guard is fair, but i think that dismisses his responsibilities a bit,, for my money, i think he has the hardest point guard job in the nba. idkk mannn. interesting conversation tho.

Nothing that has happened in FA so far changes anything that we already knew.  Unless you were living under a rock, you knew Serge Ibaka would probably rate in the range of $10-$12M a season, and that James Harden would be max or near-max.  DeAndre Jordan set the market for Serge last offseason as an RFA, Asik solidifies it.  Both of them defense oriented role players, and Ibaka will be more desirable than both because of his own abilities and the fact that he's a starter on a Finals team.   I think Harden gets extended this offseason to a max or near-max extension and Ibaka waits for RFA, and the Thunder play wait and see.  Still the most likely scenario, IMO.

There's really two kinds of Centers in this league, offensively unskilled guys who play position defense and block some shots, and the more offensively skilled guys who can roll and pop and have something less to offer on D. There are a few who possess attributes of both types, those are rare and make a whole lot of money and are hard to find. We have two of the former in Cole and Perk. We have one who is old who possesses some traits of both to a diminishing degree in Nazr, and we used to have two of the latter in Mullens and Nenad.   If we were to sign Thabeet, we would have three of the defensive minded, offensively limited types. That to me is putting all the eggs in one basket and would result in teams playing off our center defensively like we saw in the finals, where MIami would not guard Perk. We didn't make them pay, they won the series. That they didn't have to guard Perk made us less efficient on offense and them much more efficient on D.   If we are going to sign a third Center, I would much rather us sign a D leaguer or an undrafted project who posesses some of the offensive traits so AT LEAST IN PRACTICE we can learn to defend a pick and pop Center, and possibly he could help us for a few spot minutes stretching the defense from the five position. Those guys are out there.

The only real hope there is of keeping Serge and James is that they both take less than their estimated worth. This doesn't seem all that likely. How often do you see players taking less to form a dynasty? It's rare, and its not like Serge and James are getting huge endorsement deals in a smaller market like OKC.   I expect what Justin mentioned to be the likely turn of events. Harden is the better player and prospect at this stage and more of a sure thing. Ibaka has all the potential in the world, but I don't think he ever reaches the level of a player like Harden. So whilst OKC will attempt to keep both, I think by trade deadline next year we will either have traded Ibaka or we'll be waiting on Perk to be amnestied to make some room.   I'm hoping for the amnesty option.

Its unrealistic to think that Harden and Ibaka can make up the money they're giving up.   Also, Florida's tax is much friendlier.   Furthermore, that was not the first contract they signed after their rookie deal. The Hibbert portland contract makes theoretical sense. If your going to have to overpay for bigs, you might as well overpay for Good bigs. You then pair them with a lightning quick PG  who can get past any wing/Shell based defense with his speed, and hit the bigs with dump off passes for high percentage post looks.    I don't think it will work in the West, because Hibbert, LMA and illard aren't better then Bynum, Pau and Kobe and they couldn't get past this thunder team

@D@nny I agree if the Thunder had Dwight our big 3 > the Heats and it's not even close. Then image if Jones panned out as well.. though Orlando might want Harden Ibaka and Jones.   KD hasn't had a big star with a big personality like Dwight. The players on the Thunder have grown together which is why they have the culture that they do. Dwight isn't really a player you can lead or that will conform.   It's not necessary a bad thing that he wouldn't. Just don't think it's something Presti would do. The only hesitation I see would be the chemistry on the court. Some players just don't work together.   But like Jooseppi said it's not happening. Though it's fun to think about.

@jdstorm  @MostJadedGamer picking him at #2 doesnt get talked about nearly enough as one of the worst picks in NBA history. Here are some of the people picked after him: Harden evens RUBIOOO steph curry jennings jrue holiday ty lawson jeff teague MAYNOR D collison Taj Gibson Blair Jodie Meeks   09 was definitely an "elite" draft class and you picked thabeet second.  @Daniel Plainview I think MKG is going to be Amazing. However If we traded serge for a draft pick, because we couldn't afford to pay him, then the same would be true of the traded for player when their rookie contract is over.    MKG would be leaving the thunder as a 23 yr old RFA. At least with Barnes he is Already  "Super Daequan Cook" and you get him till he's 25 aka the beginning of his prime

Thabeet will most likely not play a whole lot. I think they wanna try and develop him. I think Sam see something he likes in him. It was said in the article above that Sam was trying to get him over here a couple of yrs ago. Let's just give this a chance and let's see what happens in a couple of yrs. He's cheap and if we can go as far as we did with nazr, then we can do it with thabeet sitting the bench. He won't get in the way of what we are trying to do.

@MostJadedGamer  @D@nny  @nny Yeah, Howard hasn't expressed any interest in us.  But, just wondering aloud, could that be because no one ever really saw Thunder as a realistic candidate?  Everyone knows we want to build around our core, but if someone said "Listen, Dwight, you have the potential of being on a championship team (moreso than they are now), paired with at least KD and Westbrook, would you sign long term?"   It is true, he wants money in a big market, but I don't know if the Nets can guarantee the kind of success and legacy a trio of KD, Russ, and Howard would achieve.

I wonder what the monetary value is if we can trim like $1,000 and I allow him access to her. Sounds archaic, but trust me it happens more than anyone wants to admit. That said, seems easy and I'm not sure if her value is much more than those girls who be on 42nd and Robinson and hanging out in Draper Park. I'll get him some high class ones off backpage

Anybody notice Utah has 0$ committed next season? Their whole team is on the last yr of their deal. They have 4 team options for a combined 16.5mil, but they can literally build their team from 0 by not taking them. I figure they'll keep Hayward, Kantner, and Favors though (14.1 total)

@OBoymuzik they could just steal our guys, keep their 3, and that probably adds up to what, 41mils? I'm giving James and Serge 11 each and 5 for manor, then the 14.1 committed to Favors, Kantner, and Hayward (Gordon). That's a good foundation already, then maybe add a few amnesty victims, might be able to squeak into the 8 spot.

I just read that Andrei Kirilenko and Nnd Krstc are both seeking to make returns to the NBA. AK47, gives us a legit back 3 who can also give you some minutes at the 4. Obviously with AK47 he instantly has the coolest nickname. His wife gives him 1 cheat a yr, so we have to sell him on us having a worthwhile woman in the metropolis, but other than that I don't see why not if he really wants back into the NBA. I'd assume Prokhorov would be the one to bring him back, but if not, throw a few mil at him.   Nads was baby's bottom soft and floor bound a few yrs ago when we had him, can only imagine how much worse that has gotten in his advanced age. He can probably be like Big Z and just knock down pick and pop jumpers tho

@DennisBerry He was linked with the Nets most of the season but I'm not sure where he stands now. The Kings were interested at one point. Both can offer more than the $5 mill the Thunder can and both can be more flexible with the number of years. I think he goes to start somewhere. We've been linked with the other two CSKA players that aren't returning to Russia, Vorontsevich and Shved.

If we can get someone of Hasheem's size and potential for "about $1 million a year", I don't see what's their to lose. He'll spend time travelling from Thunder to 66ers and back through the year and won't play a single minute in the post season, but the potential is there and for a third string centre he'll be fine. If the Thunder developmental staff can't make him reach his potential, nobody can

@kgbrolic Chandler in 2009 is not the same version like in 2011. He was often injured and played poorly in Charlotte. When he came to the Mavs the fans were mad because they thought he would be as bad as Haywood. Carlisle and their winner mentality were the reasons he could reach his potential. If you want to think that a poor team like the 09 Thunder and an unexperienced coach like Brooks would have developed him the same way, then fine: be mad

@diddoff OKC's coaches know how to turn raw talent into gold. Case in point - Serge Ibaka, 2009.    I would like for you to examine Chandler's role in NY.  Their coaching staff might be laughable at best.  Look...He is Defensive Player of the Year.  Imagine the Defensive Player of the Year in Tyson, and runner-up in Serge on the floor at the same time?!?    Furthermore, Tyson can run the floor and he is more dynamic than Perk.  I believe Perk has been battling injury since we acquired him...so the comment about Tyson's injury is somewhat null and void.  I still like Perk though :/

@ThunderBelize   I kinda expect Orlando to trade Howard to wherever they can get the best deal, regardless of whether it's somewhere Dwight wants to go.  He doesn't care about the Magic, so why should the Magic care about him?  I think it'll end up with some scenario like Dwight being a Charlotte Bobcat and the Magic ending up with Bradley Beal + picks.  This is not going to turn out the way Dwight thinks it will.

@f5alcon   True, but unless he has a "no trade" clause in his contract, the Magic can trade him to wherever they want before that time...which is what I think they'll do.  Dwight's only recourse will be to pout and refuse to play (which will make him the most hated player in the NBA) or to accept his role for the duration of the year and make the best of it.
