Thunder unveil alternate, to wear it Friday against Detroit

by Royce Young on November 8, 2012 at 10:45 am 273 Comments

Via @okcthunder

You’ve already kind of seen it, but the Thunder’s alternate uniform is officially here. And the best part about it is that the name is spelled right.

The first time you get to see it in action if this Friday in Oklahoma City against the Detroit Pistons. That’s right, the Thunder aren’t going to be one of Those Teams, wearing a dark alternate at home. OKC will also wearing it New Year’s Eve against the Suns. Per NBA rules, teams can only wear a dark colored alternate twice at home and 10 times on the road.

The Thunder are scheduled to wear the alternates for the these road games this season: Brooklyn (Dec. 4); Minnesota (Dec. 20); Washington (Jan. 7); Dallas (Jan. 18); Lakers (Jan. 27); Utah (Feb. 12); Denver (March 1); San Antonio (March 11); Indiana (April 5); and Golden State (April 11).

OK, so about the actual jerseys:

Like I said before, I’m a big fan of the idea. They have a real throwback look to them (a la the Cincinnati Royals), but the color scheme is just weird. Navy and white is cool, if that looked anything at all like the Thunder’s regular… anything.

All these uniforms needed was a hit of yellow/orange/Oklahoma blue somewhere in them. What if on the vertical lines where “Thunder” is, those were three lines each yellow, orange and sky blue? Or just make the number a different color. (I’m picturing the Trail Blazers’ uniform.)

Overall, they aren’t completely horrible. They’re just a missed opportunity. Why not go with “OKC”? Why only the two colors? Why navy and white? A lot of teams kind of begin a slow transition into new team colors and branding by doing it through an alternate, so I wonder if that’s what the Thunder are doing. Somewhere down the line in a few years maybe they want to move to a two color scheme.

Like I said, the vertical look is classic, which is pretty cool. This is the closest the Thunder can come to ever wearing throwbacks because there’s no way they’re rocking Sonics jerseys out there. So instead, they just create their own throwbacks new.

I think the appropriate response to the new alternates is, “Meh.” Although, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook tend to make any uniform they’re wearing look pretty cool.

This can't be right. It's supposed to say "Thudner", 2K said so.

I'm calling fake on this one.

@BlueLightSpecial I too was excited for the "Thudner!" lol

On a serious note.  This alternate jersey could be better.  But I do like these.

Here's my idea for an alternate road jersey...

The NBA is trying to slowly sneak in these new jerseys because they plan on putting ads on them.  So step by step they are hoping they get accepted so in a year or two they will start throwing ads on them and uglifying them.  Personally I will just keep my old personalized jersey, they switch to ads I'm done buying any new ones.

@grizburton i think they scrapped the ads on jersey thing atleast of now

"Meh" definitely sums up the new alts.  Mostly forgettable, like the rest of our identity.  Another miss.  I was really hoping for something cool.

@justin_mia  @PerkPunt Cavs have to decide if they want to try to be good in 2 years or 4. If they want to be good in 2 years they'll keep AV. If they target in 4 yrs they might trade him.

@PerkPunt  @Crow Jones and Jackson were both low 1st round picks that haven't done anything, okay as filler but not as the backbone of a trade for a good player like AV.

I know all these guys are professionals, but cant help but wonder if Maynors production is in part diminished due to Prestis comments. He basically said we cant resign him, and so the writing is on the wall. Hard to play motivated and be productive when you're a stop gap measure.

OBoy

@Thunder S not having a contract is not the reason maynors slower than he was before the knee injury.

Stringer Bell
Stringer Bell 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Thunder S No, if anything he would be playing harder for a contract.

I think its more to do with coming back from an injury. It can mess with  your psyche a little and Maynor has been playing the same since.

Jonas Valanciunas had five fouls in 10 minutes last night, and I was wondering if that was the worst fouling performance of the season so far. He's bested by Ryan Hollins (who had five in 8 minutes against Memphis and fouled out in 12 minutes against the Lakers).

Crow

Ryan Hollins has games of 6 fouls in 12 minutes and 5 fouls in 8 minutes.

Harden's per game stats are impressive but per minute his main improvements are usage, passing, steals and offensive rebounding. His eFG% and TS% are slightly below his career averages. His offensive rating is the lowest since his rookie year. His winshares per 48 minutes is just barely above last season though very good.

Cavs probably continue to refuse to trade Varejao but if they'd listen I'd try to make them a very good offer (giving them young players and draft picks and filler). 15 pts, 14 reb per game with a very high overall ranking. If they asked for Ibaka (and they are likely to), I'd pretend to offended but continue to talk.

BallSoHard
BallSoHard 5pts

@Crow I kind of like the idea really...but what exactly would the most likely trade scenario look like?

Crow
Crow 5pts

@BallSoHard  @Crow I'll think about it.  I just read Varejao is questionable for tomorrow night with a bruised knee so this talk might all evaporate.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@BallSoHard  @Crow Yeah, they'd ask for more. Probably decline unless they get better but I was looking for the least they might take.

BallSoHard

@Crow I think we could get him and dump Perkins simultaneously if they are willing to let go of some of the Harden haul from Houston and one of Maynor / Jackson.

Crow

@justin_mia Yeah it would probably be a big trade in terms of players / assets moved. But I'd look at hard.

Cavs about $1.5 below minimum team salary right now. If they don't increase it by end of season they will have to pay the difference to the league office.

@justin_mia  I think we are prepared to get rid of Maynor.  Probably more disappointed about his poor play for trade reasons than production reasons.

okcjim

 @cemitten  @justin_mia

I'd still rather get rid of Jackson.  Maynor will continue to get back to how he was before the injury.  The main reason I like Maynor is because he is a better distributor.  I woulnd't trade Ibaka for him but I'd give up Perk and either picks or prospects.

Noah / Boozer is the best big pairing the Thunder have faced so far. Boozer has had a slow start to the season and is carrying career lows in many stats, but he's still tricky to defend most nights. Noah has been playing 39 minutes a game and getting to the line a lot more (2.2 more FTAs per 36 than last season). He's been great. Gibson has been playing well. Nazr has been terrible in his limited minutes.
