Per the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team has waived Mitch McGary, Ronnie Price, Kaleb Tarczewski, and Chris Wright. The release of Tarczewski and Wright comes as no surprise as both were training camp invites that were destined for the Oklahoma City Blue once the preseason ended. The McGary waiving also comes as no surprise as the troubled third-year forward was facing a 15-game suspension heading into this season and had yet to play in the preseason. But the waiving of Price comes as a complete surprise, as Price signed a 2 year, $5 million contract this offseason that was fully guaranteed.
The Thunder have never been known to eat contractual money, but this offseason they have eaten two contracts. The reason for cutting Price was to keep rookie point guard Semaj Christon. The team was impressed by Christon’s play throughout the preseason and knew that if they waived him, another team would likely sign him. The casualty of keeping Christon was releasing Price from his contract.
