Wednesday Bolts – 5.9.12

by Royce Young on May 9, 2012 at 10:22 am 196 Comments

A quick recap of events: The Nuggets forced a Game 6, meaning that the Thunder likely won’t play this weekend. It means Kendrick Perkins gets a little more rest to heal, and also means that Metta World Peace will play in Game 1 should the Lakers advance.

Championship experience matters, writes Benjamin Morris of Skeptical Sports: “Of course, thinking back, it seems like picking the winner is sometimes easy, as the league often has an obvious “best team” that is extremely unlikely to ever lose a 7 game series. So perhaps the better question to ask is: How much do you gain by including the championship test in step 1? The answer is: a lot. Over the same period, the team with the league’s best record has won only 10/28 championships, or ~35%. So the 5-by-5 model almost doubles your hit rate. And in case you’re wondering, using Margin of Victory, SRS, or any other advanced stat instead of W-L record doesn’t help: other methods vary from doing slightly worse to slightly better.” (via) Keep Reading…

JAMES HARDEN

It is such a hot topic and point of concern for Thunder fans head coach Scott Brooks didn’t even wait to be asked about how his big man is doing.

“Perk’s still day-to-day,” he said before anyone could ask the question. The coach didn’t provide much more insight when a follow-up was asked.

“He’s still just getting treatments and working with our medical staff, in a couple of days we’ll see where he is and go from there, but he’s still just day-to-day.”

As we pointed out in this space yesterday day-to-day can mean a couple of days, like with James Harden and his concussion or it can mean almost a couple of months as it did with Thabo Sefolosha and his sore right foot. Keep Reading…

Rob Mahoney of Bleacher Report on James Harden: “A defender’s only chance of stopping Harden outright is to get an early peg on his unusual rhythm; there’s no metronomic certainty, but there are still lilts to be measured as Harden swings his way from dribble to dribble, shuffling briskly on his path to the rim. If Harden is set to create from the perimeter on his own, there’s ample time to pin down that cadence and at least make an attempt to wall off his path or peg his eventual shot attempt. Yet the screen — while also bumping Harden’s defender off of his immediate path — also provides a timing reset; in the scramble to recover defensive positioning, Harden’s man is forced to surrender their count, and overextend as a means of preventing the easiest basket possible.”

Jared Dubin of HP in a 5-on-5 on his biggest playoff surprise: “James Harden’s fourth-quarter takeover (15 points, 3 assists) against the Mavericks in the Thunder’s series-clinching Game 4 win was marvelous. Neglected in crunch time for much of the season, Harden put on a show Saturday night and left no doubt that he’s ascended to the level of stardom along with teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.” Keep Reading…

Thunder Player Power Rankings: First Round Edition

In four games against the Mavericks, we got a little taste of everything we’d seen over 66 games from the Thunder. Kevin Durant was amazing/incredible/outstanding/terrific. Russell Westbrook piped up and carried the team on his back at times. James Harden exploded as the best player on the floor for a while. Serge Ibaka was dominant on both ends. Kendrick Perkins showcased his toughness and defensive grit.

All in all, it amounted to a sweep that was as difficult as a sweep can be. The Thunder made some breaks, were gifted others by the grace of a friendly rim and outplayed the defending champs to advance on. After the disappointing finish to the season where OKC dropped seven straight games to playoff bound opponents, it was a lovely bounce back effort to show that maybe they were playing a bit coy down the stretch. Some confidence has been restored and the team is playing with that look in their eye again. The only question is Perk’s health, which luckily, he’s got some time to recover.

Also, who the Thunder play next.

Anyway, let’s rank the roster in that opening round: Keep Reading…

SCOTT BROOKS

We didn’t really expect to hear anything any more definitive about the playing status of Thunder center Kendrick Perkins than what we heard from head coach Scott Brooks at high noon.

When asked if Perkins was still day-to-day with his strained hip Brooks answered, “yes,” and then he admitted, “I haven’t seen him yet today but he’s with our medical staff getting worked on and I’m assuming in the next couple days we’ll have a better understanding.”

An MRI conducted Sunday revealed no tears in the muscle, just a strain. Trouble is those can take a while to heal and remember Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha was listed day-to-day for about a month and a half with his sore foot. Keep Reading…

Ben Golliver of CBSSports.com on OKC’s sweep: “Harden also proved he could be the solution to arguably the Thunder’s biggest weakness: an offense that is often overreliant on jumpers, especially late in games. Success on the perimeter is never going to draw comparisons to a “buzzsaw.” That only happens when the damage is inflicted right down the middle, piercing drives that make a team’s defense collapse, scramble and flail repeatedly. Harden — not Durant or Westbrook — brings that offensive element when he’s at his best, and that’s why the Thunder left Dallas on Saturday appearing to Carlisle as if a trophy could be in their near future.”

Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game: “You know what they say: If you’re going to lose a winnable series in four games, at least go out in an exhibition for one of the game’s most fantastically understated players, supplying the wood for his buzzsaw in what one can ultimately assume will be a daunting display of razor-focused finesse and craftsmanship. James Harden (29 points, 11-16 FG, 3-4 3FG, five rebounds, five assists) gets a raw deal because the public’s attention span can only extend to two star teammates at a time, but he’s far too good to be relegated as some distant third, and far too lethal to be ignored, even for a second. Dallas tried a number of coverages from a variety of directions in the fourth quarter, but none of it mattered — Harden attacked from the same point on the floor at the same angle, repeatedly bludgeoning the Mavericks with his own unique grace. And, as an important extension: credit upon credit to Scott Brooks, who afforded Harden the opportunities he needed without the slightest interference.” Keep Reading…

Kendrick Perkins injury update

by Royce Young on May 6, 2012 at 7:27 pm 197 Comments

The Thunder announced Sunday that Kendrick Perkins had an MRI that confirmed he suffered a right hip muscle strain in Game 4 against the Mavericks. He’s listed as day to day and his return to play will be based on his progress and recovery in the coming days.

Perk appeared to just tweak his hip early in the first quarter and did not return to the game.

With the Thunder sweeping the Mavs they will await the winner of the Nuggets-Lakers series. The Thunder will have about a week off guaranteed, with potentially nine days of rest, which could be big in getting Perk healthy for the second round.

Thunder sweep the Mavs behind Harden’s career night, 103-97

BOX SCORE

Next, please.

The Thunder accomplished the task, sweeping the defending champions. That’s the hard news. But holy beard, what an incredible win.

If you wanted something to make you feel like this team is actually championship worthy, save that fourth quarter on your DVR and set it to erase never. I’ve never watched this team and felt that kind of pride. They’ve played some wonderful games, had some impressive wins, piled up a lot of outstanding efforts, but the mental toughness it took to overcome a 13-point fourth quarter deficit in a closeout game on the road — wow.

It started and finished with James Harden, who showed the world what all of us in Oklahoma City have seen all season. On any given night, he can be the best player on the floor. And that’s one that he shares with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. He scored 15 of his playoff career-high 29 in the fourth quarter, doing it in typical Harden style. He got into the pick-and-roll, isolated, attacked and finished. It was similar to what we saw Harden do in that Houston game, except this time, Scott Brooks wasn’t afraid to just let Harden seal the deal. Keep Reading…
