Thunder even up with the Spurs, 100-88

by Royce Young on April 5, 2013 at 12:48 am 189 Comments

BOX SCORE

To the Thunder, Thursday’s win over the Spurs didn’t do anything but add another game to the win column. To everyone else, it did a whole lot more.

First, the obvious part: The Thunder now control their own destiny for the top seed in the West. Now the other part: The Thunder beat a top four team for the first time in almost two months. Seems like a nice little shot of confidence, right?

“We never lost confidence, that’s one thing,” said Kevin Durant. “We lost a few buzzer-beaters to some of these teams. I know we lost to Denver, we lost to San Antonio at their place, but we never lose confidence man. It’s the regular season. We just want to continue to get better and I think that’s what we’re doing.” Keep Reading…

View from the enemy: 48 Minutes of Hell

So, big game here.

What’s on the line is potentially the top seed in the West, with the Spurs and Thunder separated by a game in the loss column. A win for San Antonio gives them the season series tiebreaker, along with another game up in the loss column, and will make it extremely challenging for the Thunder to make up ground for No. 1. Thursday Bolts – 4.4.13

by Royce Young on April 4, 2013 at 8:36 am 339 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Rob Mahoney of SI.com on the clutch: “Miami may make for the best clutch collective and James the best all-around endgame performer, but there are three others who rate a clear cut above the rest of the field when it comes to late-game scoring proficiency: Kyrie Irving, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant. None should come as much of a surprise; all three of these players have forged reputations as steely fourth-quarter scorers, and that esteem is validated by daunting per-minute scoring numbers in clutch situations. Irving ranks tops in the league with 41.3 clutch points per 36 minutes, but Durant (38.6) and Bryant (38.2) aren’t far behind. Still, that threeish-point margin doesn’t fairly indicate the discrepancy between Irving and the rest of the field. Although all three players have comparably ridiculous usage rates in clutch situations, Irving does his damage while shooting 47.8 percent overall, while neither Durant nor Bryant make more than 42 percent of their shots in the clutch. That, ladies and gentlemen, is bonkers.”

Henry Abbott of TrueHoop on superstar calls: “Kobe Bryant draws a foul on an opponent every 6:36 he plays, and he plays a lot. Referees have called whoever is guarding Bryant for 30 fouls already this season just against the Thunder. Makes you wonder how the Thunder could ever win a game against the Lakers, until you realize Durant gets even more calls than Bryant — one for every 5:50 he plays. Over just four Thunder vs. Lakers games this year Bryant and Durant have combined to draw 60 fouls and shoot a mighty 87 free throws. The dead ball eternity of those walks to the line has done little to endear fans to the game.” Keep Reading…

THTV: Joyless in Oklahoma City?

by Royce Young on April 3, 2013 at 1:56 pm 837 Comments

“When you watch them play, the joy is not there. That’s pretty clear to me.”

That’s what David Thorpe said on TrueHoop TV today. And with that lack of joy, has manifested some causes for concern.

Things like the downturn in ball movement and in team play, and the rise of selfish stat-padding and too much individual awareness.

Thorpe said Russell Westbrook has remained Russell Westbrook — “he’s marvelous and a pain in the butt at the same time” — but has noticed a changed in both Serge Ibaka and Kevin Durant. He notes Durant’s penchant for flailing his arms in the air when he’s open, and Ibaka seeming to take more notice of his box score than his actual on court impact. Keep Reading…

Wednesday Bolts – 4.3.13

by Royce Young on April 3, 2013 at 9:03 am 256 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Darnell Mayberry on Nick Collison: “Collison’s contributions have been a boost to a bench unit that, for much of the season, has struggled to consistently keep up with its counterparts in the wake of almost wholesale changes that included the loss of reigning Sixth Man of the Year James Harden. The Thunder’s bench went from outscoring opposing benches by 5.1 points on average to getting outscored by a tenth of a point. But thanks in large part to Martin’s renowned efficiency, as well as Collison’s emergence as a scorer and passer, the Thunder’s bench is quietly more efficient than ever. Last year, the bench shot 45.5 percent. This year, in fewer minutes and shot attempts, OKC’s bench is shooting 46.5 percent.”

Rob Mahoney of SI.com on shooters: “Durant gets to the rim a ton — as evidenced by the solid glob around the basket in the middle of this Rorschach test of a shot chart — but it’s the rest of the court that interests us. The mid-range is littered with makes and attempts that come in all manner of plays, as Durant’s versatility affords the Thunder the opportunity to use him as an isolation scorer, a curl shooter, a pick-and-roll player or a spot-up option. His shot is quick and deadly regardless of cutting route or style, and in that alone Durant is a unique specimen. Even the shooters with the most idyllic shooting form don’t often see their success translate so perfectly across the field, but Durant’s combination of size, speed and handle allow him to manufacture points in just about any fashion.” Keep Reading…

The Thunder are currently just a game back in the loss column of the Spurs, and with a showdown coming Thursday against them, the Thunder realistically control their own destiny for the West’s top seed.

And while Scott Brooks and the players won’t say they care about a seeding — “It’s important to keep playing good basketball,” Brooks said when asked about how important the top seed is today — there is an acknowledgment that they do want to win every game left on the schedule. Whether or not that’s just a roundabout way to say they do want homecourt or if it’s just trying to stick to the organizational philosophy of development, what it means is the Thunder won’t be joining in with teams like the Spurs and Heat and sitting players. If you can play, you’ll play. Keep Reading…

A peek at the Thunder’s (likely) lottery pick

Four days off, so let’s talk draft for a second.

With the Toronto Raptors officially being eliminated from the playoffs last night and them tied for having the seventh worst record in the league, the Thunder are closer to being assured of their lottery pick, acquired in the James Harden trade.

But it’s no guarantee.

The pick is top three protected, as well as 15-30 protected. Since the Raptors are out of the playoffs, you can forget the 15-30 part. And with the Raptors currently being tied for seventh worst (with the Kings), it means they have a 4.3 percent chance of landing the top pick. If they drop to eighth worst, then it’s just a 2.8 percent chance and ninth worst is 1.7 percent. Keep Reading…
