Tuesday Bolts – 4.2.13

by Royce Young on April 2, 2013 at 11:10 am 144 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Matt Moore of CBSSports.com on Russell Westbrook: “Kevin Durant gets the accolades. Westbrook gets the criticism. Westbrook has been phenomenal this year, as he was last year, and were he on his own team, we’d be talking about him as a fringe MVP candidate the same way we talk about James Harden. Instead, he is mocked for his fashion sense and told to give the ball to Durant more. Westbrook should be applauded for the burden he carries for OKC as their only other significant consistent offensive contributor and for the adaptation he’s made to be more of a distributor since Harden was traded. But no one seems to like that story as much as “Should the Thunder have kept James Harden and traded Russell Westbrook?” So the same story goes on. Westbrook has been the best point guard no one seems to notice has been great.”

Amin Elhassan of ESPN Insider ranks Kevin Martin his 21st best free agent: “Martin’s experienced most every role in the league: unheralded, low-first-round pick; up-and-coming young bench player; franchise player; and now bench scorer for a contender. It’s interesting to see him flourish in that role after clearly being frustrated with the expectations of his previous contract. A three-year, $16.5 million deal would compensate him for what he brings off the bench for a contending team, while the player option allows him to pursue a bigger contract should he choose to go back to being a big fish in a small pond.” Keep Reading…

The Thunder don’t play for three more days, but when they take the floor again, it’s probably going to be in their most important game of the (regular) season.

Well, assuming that the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference is important. So I looked it up. Here are the last 10 NBA champions and where they finished in the regular season: Keep Reading…

Monday Bolts – 4.1.13

by Royce Young on April 1, 2013 at 10:16 am 266 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Bill Simmons has KD as a big loser from the Heat’s streak: “With 10 games remaining in the season, he’s averaging 28.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game (borderline Bird territory). He’s headed for his fourth straight scoring title, something only Wilt and MJ have pulled off. He’s shooting 50.2 percent from the field, 41 percent on 3s and 90.7 percent from the charity stripe, giving him a phenomenal chance to become just the sixth player ever to make the 50-40-90 Club. (The others: Bird, Nash, Dirk, Reggie and Price.) Oh, and he’s the best player on a 60-win team. How efficient is Kevin Durant? He’s going to lead the league in scoring without leading his own team in field goal attempts. Can we get an old-school ECW-style “HO-LY SHIT! HO-LY SHIT!” chant going please? Here’s the point: Poor Durant’s MVP campaign wasn’t just overshadowed by LeBron and this Miami streak, it was steamrolled and left for dead. Too bad. As Whitlock would say, keep doing the damn thang, KD.”

Berry Tramel: “I walked into the office Thursday morning, and my sports editor said, “Hey, you took it easy on Derek Fisher.” Then I answered emails from Thunder fans wanting to know why I was supporting Fisher. I went on the radio Thursday afternoon, and Jim Traber was mystified on why I would give the Thunder a platform to defend Fisher, his shooting slump and his playing time, which to some of us seems excessive. But between those events, I got an email from a reader named Joe, who wrote, “Did your mother ever tell you to say nothing if you can’t say something good? Ignoring a subject or person sends a strong message in itself. I’m ashamed of your two recent articles on Fish.” And Friday, I got a phone message from an elderly lady with a 527 prefix who said: “Mr. Tramel, are you out of your mind?. I just read what you wrote, and I’m ashamed of you. I’m ashamed of you for the remarks you made about Fisher and for other things. Sure, you have a lot of freedom with the press. But let’s not put down people in this day and time. We need to build up people and share the joy of just enjoying sports. I don’t know if I’ll read your column anymore. I’m terribly upset with what you have written.” Keep Reading…

Thunder lock down and close out the Bucks, 109-99

BOX SCORE

A night after maybe the most frustrating loss of the season, the Thunder were in another bad fourth quarter spot Saturday in Milwaukee. After giving up 37 points in the third, the Bucks had cranked up the energy to start the final frame, turning an 83-83 game at the end of three into a 92-87 lead with 8:38 left.

Scott Brooks called timeout, stomping out under the visitor’s basket, as he tends to do when he calls one of those mad timeouts. I expected wholesale changes, but instead, it was the same five back on the floor — Reggie Jackson, Derek Fisher, Kevin Martin, Kevin Durant and Nick Collison.

I don’t know what Scotty said, or if just the break in play was helpful for the Thunder to regain composure, but following the timeout OKC stampeded to a 12-0 run and a 99-92 lead, taking complete control of the game. Keep Reading…

Among many other reasons, a major shame in losing Friday to the Wolves is that the Thunder are now faced with the possibility of dropping back-to-back games. This game in Milwaukee will be a serious challenge, especially coming off a game the night before while having to play a quality opponent. Keep Reading…

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Big League City

by Royce Young on March 30, 2013 at 11:26 am 184 Comments

Happy weekend. Thank you for supporting Daily Thunder. Stay frosty.

There’s a group of Kings fans on a tour called the “Playing To Win” tour, where they’re going around NBA cities to basically spread the message of keeping the Kings in Sacramento. They stopped in Oklahoma City last week and spoke with Mayor Mick, who is just outstanding in summarizing the value of having an NBA franchise in your city.

I especially liked this line from Mayor Mick, who is so stinking eloquent: “In our case, we were a minor league city. A minor league city for 116 years and our peer cities were the ones we played in sports — Wichita, Little Rock, Amarillo, Tulsa. Nice cities, every one of them. But, with the addition of the Thunder, our peer cities, at least on a superficial, SportsCenter level, are Chicago and L.A. and New York and Miami and Boston. Cities that we would never be in conversations with without our sports entity.” Keep Reading…

Thunder stumble in Minnesota, again, 101-93

by Royce Young on March 29, 2013 at 10:15 pm 403 Comments

BOX SCORE

One word kept popping in my head as the Thunder dragged out the inevitable in the last minute in Minneapolis tonight: gross.

This was just a gross loss. Not particularly telling, really. Just a bad 48 minutes of basketball that produced a deserved result.

I made a note after the first two minutes tonight, and I kind of assumed it would be an afterthough in the end. But now, it kind of appears to have been the writing on the wall. The first two minutes featured four Minnesota offensive rebounds, two missed layups by OKC, a missed free throw and some hilariously lax defense. The tone was set and while Kevin Durant had bright moments and the Thunder had the game in reach with 7:22 left at 84-81, the final seven minutes, the Wolves responded with an 8-0 run that kind of put the game out of reach for OKC. View from the enemy: A Wolf Among Wolves

The last time the Thunder played in Minnesota, they lost a disappointing TNT game as the Wolves got hot from outside, Nikola Pekovic chewed up OKC’s bigs and J.J. Barea put on one of his patented destroy-the-Thunder lightshows. Keep Reading…
