Thunder close out Orlando, 117-104

by Royce Young on March 15, 2013 at 11:01 pm 271 Comments

BOX SCORE

On the whiteboard tonight in the Thunder’s locker room pregame written in all caps with stars around it were the words “home court.”

Pretty clear what that meant. The Thunder had to defend their castle, and to do so, they had to take the Magic seriously.

And the Thunder most definitely did for the first 32 minutes or so. They roared to 73 first half points shooting 63.9 percent from the field while maintaining very solid defensive intensity. The bench was fantastic providing a secondary spark to follow up behind the first five. It looked like another one of those three-and-out nights for the starters. All they had to do was close out a few minutes well and it was going to be to the bench for them to wave towels and cheer on the garbage time All-Stars. Keep Reading…

View from the enemy: Magic Basketball

The biggest question for tonight’s game probably is, can the Thunder win a seventh straight home game by double-digits? OK, that’s definitely a little arrogant, but at this point, it’s hard not to be. The Thunder have been handling business at home extremely matter-of-factly, especially against lower profile opponents. Keep Reading…

KD wants to be like Larry

by Royce Young on March 15, 2013 at 12:58 pm 93 Comments

Here’s Kevin Durant’s interview with Magic Johnson from the other night where he says he’s trying to emulate Larry Bird’s game. Which I think is incredibly wise. KD’s skillset really sets up be Basketball Jesus 2.0. A big guy with a silky outside touch, a great handle and good passing skills.

Also, another thing I love about this interview: You can just tell how much respect KD has for Magic. Not that Durant’s intimidated, but he’s also not puffing his chest out about who he is. He kind of looks like how most any normal person might act talking to Earvin.

Friday Bolts – 3.15.13

BoltsLogoNew1Darnell Mayberry explores if the Thunder are better this season: “According to a recent survey of NewsOK.com readers, 62 percent of more than 700 polled think the Thunder is worse without Harden. Various other quibbles, such as the lack of a “true” low post scorer, the coach not playing certain players, erratic ball movement and, of course, Derek Fisher’s playing time among other things, has only added to the belief that the Thunder would be hard-pressed to knock off Miami in a potential Finals rematch. Then there’s the matter of whether the team’s All-Star duo is ready to sprout in this year’s postseason and offset any and all flaws, or if the tandem will continue to be handcuffed by their biggest weaknesses. The Thunder, after all, has been plagued at times this season by Kevin Durant’s turnovers and Russell Westbrook’s tantrums. Only 17 regular season games remain in this vengeful journey. Soon, the answer to the only question that matters will be revealed to us. Exactly what are we to make of this year’s Thunder?”

5-on-5 where Israel Gutierrez of ESPN.com takes Westbrook’s season over Wade’s: “And that’s only because you have to take the entire body of work into play. Wade, once he has gotten completely healthy, has been the better player. But Westbrook, despite the inefficient shooting, has had a greater responsibility for a longer stretch of the season and has still kept his team in the running for top record out west.” Keep Reading…

Thursday Bolts – 3.14.13

by Royce Young on March 14, 2013 at 11:07 am 35 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Darnell Mayberry: “Durant just didn’t look into it tonight. If anyone deserves a pass it’s Durant. But he wasn’t available to the media at shoot-around this morning for unknown reasons — he asked off — or prior to the game. Then he came out and looked lethargic from the start, almost like he didn’t want to be here. Again, if I’d played my tail off for 64 games I would be mentally, physically and emotionally spent as well. But when Durant checked out of the game for the first time with 4:45 left in the first period, he sauntered to the bench, sulking almost. When Sefolosha drilled a 3 moments later, Durant, typically the captain of the cheerleaders on the bench, barely budged. Something just wasn’t right with him in this one.”

SLC Dunk: “While the Thunder should be credited for good defense, Utah simply seemed off their game nearly all night: Hayward airballed two shots (though finished with 20 points), Al Jefferson was only 4/13, Millsap finished 1-5 (albeit went 5-8 from the free throw line), Mo Williams shot 2-7 and had 4 turnovers. The Thunder also deserve some credit for fighting through the early offensive struggles by Kevin Durant, who had 6 TOs by the end of the half.” Keep Reading…

KD and the Thunder bounce back and wax the Jazz, 110-87

by Royce Young on March 13, 2013 at 10:58 pm 418 Comments

BOX SCORE

After Kevin Durant popped a 3 late in the second quarter, he dropped his head and half-halfheartedly pointed his finger to the sky to complete his routine.

It was a shot that made him 2-7 from the floor for eight points, but took a little of the sting out of one of his worst halves in recent memory. He had six turnovers to go with his rough shooting and just had a general look of either exhaustion, frustration, annoyance, or maybe all three.

His first half was no bother to his team though who were cruising over a hapless Jazz squad. The Thunder held Utah to just 28 first half points on 22.7 percent shooting, which included an OKC era record for fewest points in a quarter as the Jazz scored only nine in the second on 3-of-24 shooting. It was virtually game over within the first 24 minutes. Keep Reading…

View from the enemy: Salt City Hoops

Just what the doctor ordered after a disappointing loss in San Antonio. A return trip home to play a sliding Jazz team. Which I guess makes them a little dangerous, since they’re desperate. Their playoff hopes are sliding, but at the same time, they just aren’t playing very good basketball, especially on the road. Keep Reading…
