Video: A priceless $20,000 halfcourt shot

by Royce Young on March 6, 2013 at 2:28 pm 963 Comments

You’ve probably already seen it and heard about it. High school teacher and coach Heath Kufahl drilling a halfcourter to win $20,000.

It’s not anything new. Kufahl is the first this season to make one, but I think the fourth total in OKC’s history. It’s always fun to see it drop, to see the person run around in wild disbelief and then it’s back to the game.

But Kufahl’s story is a little bit different.

You see, he and his wife Jenni have seven children. But to melt your heart even more, Jenni was diagnosed with colon cancer last fall. And as Heath said, that’s exactly where the money is going.

(You can read more about their story at their website here.)

Incredible. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be over here wiping my eyes for the next 30 minutes.

Wednesday Bolts – 3.6.13

BoltsLogoNew1Zach Harper of CBSSports.com: “Earlier today, I went down the YouTube rabbit hole of watching full boxing matches of a young Mike Tyson. I watched his fifth professional fight when he pulverized John Alderson in two rounds. I watched him obliterate the existence of Michael Johnson 39 seconds into Tyson’s eighth professional fight. I relived Mark Young and Reggie Gross show the same fear and abandonment of their game plans as soon as Tyson came after them that we saw with Michael Spinks when Tyson defeated all three of them, unifying the heavyweight titles after the 91-second destruction of Spinks. Watching Durant and Westbrook operate against the Lakers Tuesday night, I couldn’t help but feel like I was reliving the same boxing clips I had watched with Tyson earlier in the day. The combination of Durant and Westbrook is the perfect balance of exquisite technique and an unstoppable power. The footwork of both players looks flawless, keeping them stabilized while they leave their defenders sliding out of position.”

Ben Golliver of SI.com: “Remember, protecting the basketball was arguably Oklahoma City’s biggest weakness: turnovers have been this team’s Achilles’ heel. The Thunder entered the game tied for fourth in the league with 930 turnovers on the season, trailing only the Rockets, Pistons and Warriors. Their 14.7 turnover percentage — that is, the number of turnovers they commit per 100 possessions — tied for last with the Rockets. That the Thunder possess the NBA’s second-best offensive efficiency while also being so loose with the ball is impressive and it speaks to the aggressive and relentless nature of their attack. What happens when the Thunder combine their scoring efficiency with total control? 71 points on 50 shots at halftime. That’s nearly inconceivable.” Keep Reading…

Thunder stave off desperate Lakers, 122-105

BOX SCORE

Sometimes, it’s how you start and how you finish. The first six minutes tonight, the Lakers didn’t make a single basket. The last six minutes, the Lakers didn’t score a single point.

That right there, seems like a good formula for winning, especially when you have Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant to fill out the in-between.

Westbrook: 37 points on 15-29 shooting, 10 rebounds, five assists. Durant: 26 points, nine rebounds, five assists. The Lakers just don’t have an answer for those two, but especially Westbrook. Keep Reading…

Pace: Thunder – 93.8 (8th), Lakers – 94.8 (3rd)

View from the enemy: Forum Blue and Gold

It’s pretty clear: This game is definitely more important for the Lakers than it is the Thunder. Not to say it’s meaningless for OKC, but the Lakers aren’t going to be able to survive many more losses. They’re basically in the playoffs already, forced to compete with their lives on the line. The Thunder, they just don’t want to lose at home, don’t want to drop a game in the loss column to the Spurs and don’t want to blow any positive momentum. Keep Reading…

Is Russell Westbrook the next Kobe?

by Royce Young on March 5, 2013 at 1:40 pm 436 Comments

There’s never really been a good comparison for Russell Westbrook. Coming out of UCLA, some went the Rajon Rondo route. Some saw him as a Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury type. Of course there’s Derrick Rose, who’s his current peer. Maybe Dwyane Wade?

Truly, Westbrook is kind of a one of a kind. Size, power, strength, speed, speed, skill, speed and speed.

But for ESPN Insider today and on TrueHoop TV, David Thorpe ponders an interesting question: Is Westbrook the next Kobe Bryant? Keep Reading…

Tuesday Bolts – 3.5.13

by Royce Young on March 5, 2013 at 9:22 am 307 Comments

BoltsLogoNew11KD on techs: “He (Brooks) talks to us about it, but during the heat of the moment, it’s kind of different,” Durant said with a smile. “I’ve got 12 of them. I’m not happy about it, but I don’t regret them. I’m just going to go out there and play with that fire I’ve always been playing with and hopefully I just shy away from getting the techs. Whatever happens, happens. Just live with it. Every single moment of me playing in this league, I’m going to cherish it. Try not to take it for granted, I guess.”

Tzvi Twersky of SLAM with a great feature on Russell Westbrook: “There is no irony lost in Westbrook saying he can’t make a mean or scary face. After all, if you entered the Thunder locker room pre-game and saw Westbrook with a towel shrouding his head, or if you watch the Thunder play on national TV, you’d think Westbrook (and not his teammate Perkins) invented the disgusted scowl, invented the hard stare. You’d think that he was an ornery guy who walks around all day with a chip on his shoulder the size of a Larry O’Brien trophy. You’d think that, as one person close to him put it, he looks like a villain. You’d think…wrong.” Keep Reading…

How the Thunder almost drafted Brook Lopez instead of Russell Westbrook

by Royce Young on March 4, 2013 at 3:20 pm 850 Comments

Ben Alamar is a professor of sports management at Menlo College in California and was formerly an analytics consultant for the Thunder.

He’s never been permitted to openly speak about his role with the Thunder because, well, it’s the Thunder. But now that he’s no longer affiliated with the organization, he’s gone public.

At last week’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at MIT, Alamar spoke with Grantland’s Zach Lowe about his role with the Thunder and how analytics pushed OKC in drafting Russell Westbrook and not Brook Lopez.

Incredibly interesting stuff. Praise be to analytics.

Also, Alamar has a book out with a lot of Thunder stuff in it. You can pick that up here.
