TGR 93: Slam dunks and junk shots

by Thunderground Radio on March 5, 2013 at 11:36 am 252 Comments

DTTGRTwo blow outs, a couple nail biters and one giant shot to the mommy-daddy button made this week an eventful one for the Thunder.

Joel and Brad give you their take including:

  • Ibaka’s defensive improvement?
  • The addition of Fisher
  • Russell Westbrook’s recent domination
  • What does it take to consider your own guy a dirty player?

…and much more!

Tuesday Bolts – 3.5.13

by Royce Young on March 5, 2013 at 9:22 am 307 Comments

BoltsLogoNew11KD on techs: “He (Brooks) talks to us about it, but during the heat of the moment, it’s kind of different,” Durant said with a smile. “I’ve got 12 of them. I’m not happy about it, but I don’t regret them. I’m just going to go out there and play with that fire I’ve always been playing with and hopefully I just shy away from getting the techs. Whatever happens, happens. Just live with it. Every single moment of me playing in this league, I’m going to cherish it. Try not to take it for granted, I guess.”

Tzvi Twersky of SLAM with a great feature on Russell Westbrook: “There is no irony lost in Westbrook saying he can’t make a mean or scary face. After all, if you entered the Thunder locker room pre-game and saw Westbrook with a towel shrouding his head, or if you watch the Thunder play on national TV, you’d think Westbrook (and not his teammate Perkins) invented the disgusted scowl, invented the hard stare. You’d think that he was an ornery guy who walks around all day with a chip on his shoulder the size of a Larry O’Brien trophy. You’d think that, as one person close to him put it, he looks like a villain. You’d think…wrong.” Keep Reading…

How the Thunder almost drafted Brook Lopez instead of Russell Westbrook

by Royce Young on March 4, 2013 at 3:20 pm 850 Comments

Ben Alamar is a professor of sports management at Menlo College in California and was formerly an analytics consultant for the Thunder.

He’s never been permitted to openly speak about his role with the Thunder because, well, it’s the Thunder. But now that he’s no longer affiliated with the organization, he’s gone public.

At last week’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at MIT, Alamar spoke with Grantland’s Zach Lowe about his role with the Thunder and how analytics pushed OKC in drafting Russell Westbrook and not Brook Lopez.

Incredibly interesting stuff. Praise be to analytics.

Also, Alamar has a book out with a lot of Thunder stuff in it. You can pick that up here.

It’s March, which means this is the last full month of the NBA season before the playoffs. The Thunder have 23 games remaining, 11 at home, 12 on the road. Assuming they maintain their current clip, Oklahoma City’s record should finish something like 60-22.

Will that be good enough to pass the Spurs? Who knows. In all truth, it probably doesn’t really matter. As the Thunder proved last season, they’re fine without home court advantage. Plus, with the Lakers pushing, finishing with that top seed might not be all that attractive either.

But regardless of seeding and positioning, March is the time to really start cranking it up. It’s time to nail down lineups and rotations, time to begin establishing a somewhat consistent standard of performance to go on. The Thunder didn’t exactly cruise into last year’s playoffs riding an incredible wave of momentum, but they certainly knew who they were. Right now, I’m still not entirely sure this team does. Monday Bolts – 3.4.13

BoltsLogoNew1How Serge Ibaka explained the Blake Griffin thing: “He hit my hands away,” Ibaka told reporters. “He’s strong, so when he grabs you, your jersey or whatever, and you try to defend yourself and rebound. So maybe you can do some move, not to hurt, (but) just to get good position. But then something happens where you get hurt in the paint. It’s not anything where I want to try to hurt him. I’m not that kind of person. I just try to play hard, and that’s it … I just tried to play hard. I really don’t care if someone is dirty or not, that’s not my problem,” Ibaka said. “His game was intense, we all were complaining to the referees (about) some dirty stuff. It’s basketball. We just played. If you can see the replay, you can see he grabbed my jersey first so I wanted to try to defend myself. (But) not to hurt him.”

Interesting Q&A with Thabo Sefolosha (translated) where he says his foot hurts again and talks about that spat with Westbrook: “A month ago it was between you and Westbrook. On the field to a dispute He yelled at you. Why? Uf, what can I say? It happens. Westbrook is a great, great fighter. He fights against the enemy, sometimes even against themselves. In his head, playing out things I do not know. Sometimes you have to leave him alone and give him the space he needs. Westbrook was then taken by coach Brooks from the game. He went out of protest for a few minutes in the tunnel. With a Playmaker with such childish behavior can not be one champion, then criticized the media. He is an exceptional player, he has already won for us to kids. And so you have to accept his less good sides. I try to calm things down, as they heat up even more.” Keep Reading…

Led by Westbrook, Thunder close the Clippers, 108-104

by Royce Young on March 3, 2013 at 6:42 pm 902 Comments

BOX SCORE

With 2:23 left in the fourth quarter, Serge Ibaka powered through a two-handed dunk to put the Thunder up 99-93, appearing to put a pesky Clippers team away for good.

Thirty-one seconds later, it was a different kind blow Ibaka dealt to the Clippers. One that will certainly be reviewed by the league, and one that nearly cost the Thunder a tremendous road win. Battling Blake Griffin for rebounding position under the rim, Ibaka was being held off and out of clear frustration, chopped down hard at Griffin. Keep Reading…

Something you probably didn’t want to hear: The Clippers are just a half game behind the Thunder, two behind in the loss column. OKC already has the season series in hand against the Clips, but those two games have addendums on them. The first was the second of a back-to-back for the Clippers, the second was without Chris Paul. Keep Reading…

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Dream Shake

by Royce Young on March 2, 2013 at 8:46 am 810 Comments

Happy Saturday. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. The Brodie, don’t hate on it.

Here’s how I feel about this whole Harlem Shake thing: I want to hate it, which I’m pretty sure I do, but I can’t resist clicking play on darn near every single one I see. It’s so stupid. But it’s also kind of great. This is my favorite one yet, and while it’s not technically an official Harlem Shake and is more the creation of an enterprising young lad, it’s still terrific.
