Friday Bolts – 3.1.13

by Royce Young on March 1, 2013 at 10:36 am 549 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Kevin Pelton of ESPN Insider on how players age: “One of the most important discoveries of sabermetrics was that the peak age for baseball players was much younger than conventional wisdom held. For the most part, basketball research has found a similar prime to baseball, with a peak age around 27. However, the answer depends on the metric of choice because different skills age differently; players grab fewer offensive rebounds from the time they enter the league but shoot more accurately. Defense might peak latest of all because of the importance of experience. The continued success of this generation’s veterans, such as Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan, also is forcing us to rethink how players decline in their 30s.”

Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com in a 5-on-5 on OKC’s biggest hurdle: “The San Antonio Spurs. Same as it was last season. The matchups are mostly the same but don’t think Gregg Popovich hasn’t spent a long time thinking about how he’ll construct his strategy in a rematch.” Keep Reading…

Feast or Famine: OKC’s odd last 17 games

Here’s how the Thunder’s last 17 games have gone: They either won by double-digits, or they lost. No close wins. If they won, it came by double-digits. Ten of those games went that way. An average margin of victory of 22.9 points.

If the Thunder lost — seven went that way — it was mostly a close game (one exception being the fourth quarter meltdown against the Jazz).

The last legitimately close game the Thunder won was Jan. 18 against the Mavericks, a 117-114 win in Dallas in overtime. KD’s 52-point game.

Basically, the Thunder are obliterating their opposition, or they’re losing close. What’s it all mean? Keep Reading…

BoltsLogoNew1Via Ball Don’t Lie, the Thunder have the cheapest beer in basketball: “What’s warming more than the previously stated findings is that the two most entertaining teams in basketball – the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder – offer the lowest beer prices of any team. The Miami Heat may be the championship favorites, but they lose points not only for their tardy fans but an annoying public address announcer and the second-highest (tied, with Washington and Boston, at eight bucks a brew) beer prices in the NBA. The Thunder and Spurs are on a fast track to yet another Western conference finals showdown, one that hopefully will go beyond the six games we saw last year between each team. It’s true that two beers (excluding tip, and please tip) during one of those games will cost you as much as that 30-pack of cans you used to buy in your early 20s, but you also weren’t allowed the opportunity to see Tony Parker and Russell Westbrook in person, going back in forth, in your apartment’s living room back then. Not a bad deal, Spurs and Thunder. Cheers.”

Darnell Mayberry: “I’ve not been a proponent of Perk guarding point guards. Seems pointless to have “the league’s best low post defender” D’ing up 40 and even 80 feet away from the basket. But he was terrific tonight. Perk pestered Vasquez and forced him into wild shots and quick decisions. Perk was so good it looked like a mismatch in favor of the Thunder. Rarely, if ever tonight, could Vasquez blow by Perk. On one second half possession when Vasquez tried, Perk soundly slid his feet to stay in front of him and blocked his shot once Vasquez forced up a shot near the paint.” Keep Reading…

KD dominates as the Thunder stomp the Hornets, 119-74

by Royce Young on February 27, 2013 at 10:57 pm 523 Comments

BOX SCORE

After checking out with a triple-double in hand with 4:01 left in the third quarter, Kevin Durant walked to midcourt to high-five his teammates. And he said it all.

“This is a rout.”

With the Hornets shorthanded — and mostly terrible anyway — the Thunder used a 34-15 third quarter to put the game to bed early. In less than three quarters, Durant put up 18 points (on 5-8 shooting), 11 rebounds and 10 assists, his third triple-double of the season (and career), and second in the last four games. In less than three quarters, Russell Westbrook put up 29 points, three rebounds and three assists. In way less than three quarters, Serge Ibaka put up 18 points (on 9-11 shooting), with seven rebounds and three blocks. Keep Reading…

Hornets vs. Thunder: Pregame Primer

no-hornets vs. okc-thunder

Pelicans (20-38, 10-20 road) vs. Thunder (41-15, 25-4 home)

TV: FSOK (Cox 37, HD 722, Tulsa Cox 27, DirectTV 679, UVerse 754)
Stream: Click here
Radio: WWLS The Sports Animal (98.1 FM, 640 AM, 97.1 FM Tulsa)
Time: 7:00 CT

Offensive Rating: Thunder – 112.6 (2nd), Pelicans– 105.6 (14th)
Defensive Rating: Thunder – 103.1 (8th), Pelicans – 108.8 (27th)
Pace: Thunder – 93.8 (8th), Pelicans – 88.9 (29th)

View from the enemy: Pelicans 24/7

The most interesting thing about this game is what happens with the Thunder’s bench. With the Hornets missing both Anthony Davis and (likely) Eric Gordon, it seems that the outcome should already be in hand with OKC. Of course you still have to play and we’ve seen the Thunder fall flat, but it would be very unusual at home. Keep Reading…

TrueHoop TV: Eric Maynor

by Royce Young on February 27, 2013 at 1:25 pm 138 Comments

Former Thunderer Eric Maynor joined Kevin Arnovitz on an episode of TrueHoop TV and discussed being traded, what his conversation was like with Sam Presti that day, playing for OKC and what it was like being Russell Westbrook’s teammate.

Maynor on Westbrook: “Great person. Great person off the court. People don’t understand he’s just a true competitor on the court. But off the court, he’s just a great dude.”

Maynor’s role in Portland so far has been similar to what he did in OKC the past few years. He’s a backup to a young point guard, playing around 15 minutes a game or so and called upon to be a change-of-pace kind of guy.

It’s obviously a much better situation for him because he’s seeing time. For a guy that was near and dear to a lot of Thunder fans’ hearts, it’s a little odd to see him somewhere else, but for Maynor, and really the Thunder too, definitely for the best.

BoltsLogoNew1J.A. Adande of ESPN.com on the NBA’s best closer: “Whoa, don’t be so quick to bail out on Durant. I saw firsthand the way he finished off the Lakers in Games 2 and 4 of the conference semifinals last year. Before that he beat Dallas with a jumper that won their first playoff game and sent the Thunder on their way to a sweep. Durant has the range to force defenders to guard him out to 28 feet, and he’s constantly getting better at going past them with the dribble. The problem was, as you mentioned, Durant’s inability to command the ball in fourth quarters against the Heat. LeBron, CP3 and Irving have an advantage in that they almost always start the offense with the ball late in games. Durant has to get it from Westbrook. Westbrook is more deferential in crunch time than people give him credit for; in Game 4 against the Lakers, for example, he had a 37-point game going and still let Durant take the wheel down the stretch. But there’s always the possibility Westbrook might decide it’s his moment to shine.”

Berry Tramel: “I guess everyone remembers that Fisher wasn’t the Thunder’s backup point guard in the 2012 postseason. James Harden was. When Russell Westbrook took a rest, Fisher slid over and played shooting guard, while Harden initiated the offense. If the Thunder believes Reggie Jackson isn’t ready for the playoffs, then Fisher has to be the backup point guard. I think Jackson is the better option, but either way, there’s no Harden this time. So unless Westbrook plays 48 minutes a game, someone must initiate the offense.” Keep Reading…

Practice Report: Derek Fisher will ‘definitely’ play

I saw the addition of Derek Fisher as a great thing, as a perfect move to bring in a great locker room voice and added roster insurance. A very sensible, smart thing to do with an open roster slot available.

But that was assuming he wasn’t going to be jumping right back into the rotation because surely not, right?

“Definitely, he will play,” so says Scott Brooks.
