View from the enemy: Salt City Hoops

Just what the doctor ordered after a disappointing loss in San Antonio. A return trip home to play a sliding Jazz team. Which I guess makes them a little dangerous, since they’re desperate. Their playoff hopes are sliding, but at the same time, they just aren’t playing very good basketball, especially on the road. Keep Reading…

How OKC’s starting five went from killed to killer

One of the larger talking points about the Thunder the past few seasons has been the inconsistency of their starting five.

Because of Oklahoma City’s prowess off the bench with James Harden, the Thunder’s lineup of Russell Westbrook, Thabo Sefolosha, Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins was universally agreed upon to be one of the team’s weaker five-man groups. The Thunder almost seemed to just be surviving those first six or seven minutes until Harden could check in and get things settled.

That’s changed this season. And changed in a big way. Instead of a liability, OKC’s starting five is officially its best lineup. They’ve played more minutes together than any other and have a net rating of +13.5, making it one of the best in the entire league. Keep Reading…

Wednesday Bolts – 3.13.13

DBoltsLogoNew1arnell Mayberry on Ronnie Brewer: “A defensive identity was being built, on the backs of a motley crew that consisted of Reggie Jackson, Kevin Martin, Thabo Sefolosha, DeAndre Liggins, Nick Collison and Hasheem Thabeet. They did the dirty work. They didn’t mind. They just got the job done. And then Oklahoma City started overthinking. The Thunder inexplicably went away from what was working, sitting various pieces that comprised that effective combination and slowly suppressing the successes the second unit had enjoyed. When the trade deadline arrived, the Thunder acquired Ronnie Brewer for peanuts. He appeared to be a perfect fit, a defensive-minded player with a pristine reputation who could step in and immediately help revive the second group’s one-time tenacity. Wrong. Brewer hasn’t played. Not much, that is, and the question many now want an answer to is why?”

KD on his shot attempts: “I can do whatever I want on the offensive end,” Durant said. “I can come down and take 30 shots. That’s not the right brand of basketball for me, to just come down and shoot. It’s not because of the defense limiting me to 13 shots. I could have shot more than that, but I was trying to make the right basketball play.” Keep Reading…

Five leftovers from the schooling in San Antonio

A couple additional thoughts that popped in my head after sleeping on the Thunder’s 105-93 loss to the Spurs last night:

1. Bench slapped. It’s not that the San Antonio bench completely destroyed the Thunder’s, it’s just that the Thunder’s second unit couldn’t hold down the fort at all. In terms of plus/minus, the four rotation bench guys were -24, -22, -21 and -15. They scored a total of 16 points to the Spurs’ 34.

The shame of it is that OKC’s bench was rolling in the first quarter and early second. Kevin Martin hit three 3s in a short span, seemingly setting a wonderful tone for the second unit. After Martin hit his last 3 with 10:11 left in the second quarter, he didn’t hit another shot, and only actually even attempted two more, both 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter. Keep Reading…

Tuesday Bolts – 3.12.13

BoltsLogoNew1Read Matt Moore of CBSSports.com’s terrific feature on Scott Brooks: “Surely, the biggest cause of Durant’s liftoff was his own talent and work ethic. But sometimes the best of potential goes awry. You have to put the team around him, and you have to work with him to improve. That’s where Brooks comes in. Brooks is rarely talked about for his development chops, as if the Thunder just sprung up from the ground without cultivation. But turning good players into great is a process. Brooks is quick to acknowledge that turning these players into a Finals contender took a lot of work. He’s just not willing to take any credit for it.”

Neil Paine of ESPN Insider on KD’s ring chances: “Theoretically, Durant would be in his prime, just as James is now. By then, James should be in clear decline in his age-33 season, and there’s no guarantee Wade or Bosh will have anything left by then, nor whether James still would be playing with them. Fact is, that sweet spot could come even earlier if things break right for Durant and wrong for James. Having said that, James has such a huge edge on Durant and everyone else productionwise that he could lose 15 percent of his value and still be ahead of Durant. That means we shouldn’t be surprised if the first decade or more of Durant’s career plays out in parallel against James’, with LeBron getting the better of him in terms of ring count simply because he continues to be the game’s most dominant player. In some sports, there’s no shame in being second-best because sometimes you even get lucky and win anyway. Unfortunately for Durant, basketball just isn’t one of those sports.” Keep Reading…

Spurs whip the Thunder, 105-93

BOX SCORE

Open opposing shooters and turnovers. Not exactly a recipe for confidence in a late-season matchup for the Thunder against one of their primary obstacles in the path of another NBA Finals run.

OKC wasted an inspired start Monday night in San Antonio to get whipped 105-93, leaving a trail of ugly turnovers, wide-open Spurs 3-pointers and maddening two-way execution in its wake. The Thunder consequently have dropped both road games against San Antonio this year and stand a full two games back of the Spurs in the race for the top spot in the West playoff race.

The Thunder started out relatively hot and playing well, looking much like the team that famously won four straight games against the juggernaut Spurs to win the Western Conference. Oklahoma City crashed the boards, moved the ball and overwhelmed the slower Spurs with athleticism. But then OKC spent much of the rest of the game imitating the team that just as famously lost those first two playoff games against the Spurs, and dropped the Finals in five games while looking completely overmatched tactically in doing so. View from the enemy: 48 Minutes of Hell

So, this is a big game. That is, if you’ve concerned yourself with the top seed and homecourt in the West for the playoffs. Which I think the Thunder should. For all the things they’ve accomplished and the steps taken, one they haven’t pulled off is the West’s No. 1 seed. And when you consider the dominance they’ve shown at The Peake over the last month, having those extra games in your building could be big. Keep Reading…
