Wednesday Bolts – 5.29.13

by Royce Young on May 29, 2013 at 6:44 am 261 Comments

BoltsLogoNew1Bradford Doolittle of ESPN Insider on spacing: “Team defense has been altered since the illegal defense rules and hand-checking protocols evolved into the form we now know. Smart coaches like Chicago’s Tom Thibodeau and San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich figured out how to load up the strong side of the court while sagging from the weak side of the defense to protect the paint. Unless there is a defensive breakdown, the only good option on many possessions is to swing the ball from one side of the court to the other in hopes of finding a weakside shooter. This requires precision ball movement and a player who can hit those open looks before the defense can recover and close. If you don’t have that kind of stand-still shooter, then the defense shuts down the lane, stifles the pick-and-roll and reduces an offense to hero shots. We saw that time and again in the Memphis-San Antonio series.”

John Rohde: “From the outset, Martin essentially was in a Catch-22 situation. Had his productivity remained on par with Harden’s, the Thunder wouldn’t have been able to afford to keep the 30-year-old Martin, who earned $12.4 million this season and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Oddly enough, when OKC’s season abruptly finished by losing 4-1 to Memphis in the second round of the playoffs, Martin was left thirsting for more playing days with the Thunder.”

VIDEO: Serge Ibaka tours tornado devastation

by Royce Young on May 28, 2013 at 1:21 pm 931 Comments

Serge Ibaka was out of town when the tornado hit in Moore on vacation in Mexico. Even still while he was out of the country, he was active on Twitter and doing all he could to help. But first thing he did after he got back was to head directly to Moore.

Just look at what it means to these people that have just lost homes and belongings to have Ibaka show up and tell them it’s going to be alright. Amazing.

Also, after the jump, a new NBA Cares commercial featuring Russell Westbrook talking about the devastation: Keep Reading…

BoltsLogoNew1Brandon Parker of the Washington Post: “The texts typically start rolling in around early May, players inquiring about the availability of DeMatha’s gymnasium for a workout or pick-up game. Of course, Stags Coach Mike Jones is happy to oblige, opening the space a few times a week as a who’s who of local basketball products streams through the doors. But for as many familiar and talented faces Jones sees during the typical flow of summer sessions, even he was a bit surprised when a certain NBA All-Star strolled into the gym on Saturday. Flanked by three friends and just a couple weeks removed from the end of his team’s NBA playoff run, Oklahoma City forward and Montrose Christian alum Kevin Durant came ready for what would be an intense set of contests.”

Darnell Mayberry: “Is the Thunder so talented that it couldn’t use a steady stream of points, rebounds and blocked shots from Perk? ‘With us, we don’t need the scoring,’ said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. ‘We need his toughness. We need his defense. We need his ability to guard.’ But why can’t Perkins be a stat sheet stuffer? Why can’t he provide the most basic plays from his position next season? Because we now know Perkins will in fact be back next season. Thunder general manager Sam Presti recently put to rest any and all doubts over whether Perkins will be waived under the league’s amnesty clause. So that ship — at least for this summer — has sailed.” Keep Reading…

Revisiting those 35 confident statements

Before the season started, I made 35 statements filled with a robust amount of confidence. Let’s check in to see how brilliant I am.

1. Kevin Durant will win his fourth straight scoring title. Woo. Off to a good start.

2. Serge Ibaka won’t win Defensive Player of the Year. Really not all that big of a limb to go out on, but I don’t think many saw him finishing third to Marc Gasol and LeBron.

3. But Ibaka will lead the league in blocks again. Nailed it! Keep Reading…

BoltsLogoNew1Bill Simmons on Dwight Howard: “Jumping to Houston makes sense for Howard on just about every level … well, except for one. His critics would eviscerate him for running from Orlando and Los Angeles. And they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. We already know that Dwight is oversensitive. Some believe Dwight reversed course and agreed to that one-year Orlando extension because he couldn’t stop reading his Twitter replies right before the 2012 trade deadline; as the theory goes, he kept reading fans calling him a quitter and a loser, then melted down. So even if he believed Houston (or Dallas, or Atlanta, or wherever) was a better situation and wanted to play there, could he handle the inevitable “YOU QUIT ON THE LAKERS!” critics? Could he summon the intestinal fortitude to leave?”

Darnell Mayberry on “picking” Ibaka over Harden: “In the short term, yes. In the long run, no. Harden is a much more polished player than Ibaka and could have given the Thunder a couple of years of the best trio in basketball. It would have been a three-headed monster most teams would not have been able to defend. But three max contracts on the same team has quickly become a fading format thanks to the league’s more punitive rules. So the window would have been open for roughly two years and then the Thunder, in all likelihood, would have lost both Harden and Ibaka — possibly for nothing in return.” Keep Reading…

Saturday Morning Cartoons: #Resiliency

Happy Saturday. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. Oklahoma.

I know I just wrote about all this, but this video is pretty tremendous. I just want to reiterate how well the Thunder have handled all this. They’ve been wonderful. One of of my favorite things about this video though is how the players listen.

They let the people tell their story, talk about how it is for them and what they’re doing next. That’s one of the best things they can do. Because this is an unbelievable experience for everyone, something that’s life-changing and that they’ll remember forever. And for them to be able to tell Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and Scott Brooks and Thabo Sefolosha and Sam Presti all about it has to feel really good. I found that outstanding.

Thanks KD, thanks Thunder

Here’s what Kevin Durant has done since a tornado shredded a portion of his city:

  • He gave $1 million less than 16 hours after it happened. And didn’t make a peep he was doing it.
  • He immediately traveled back to Oklahoma to tour the area and meet with survivors and those affected.
  • He reached out to Nike to get them to donate $1 million worth of stuff to relief, as well as the money made from the sell of KD Vs on Nike.com for the next couple weeks.
  • And he says he wants to do more. Probably is, too. We just don’t know about it, because you know, that’s how KD operates.

Short of flying around Earth Superman II style to prevent this from ever happening, there’s not a whole lot more this guy can do. Kevin Durant is a genuine hero. Not just because he swishes jumpers and wins basketball games. He gets it. I’m not typically the kind of person that gets emotional over every little thing, but any time think about KD immediately making that donation or signing pictures for people that had their house blown away, I pretty much lose it. (When he tells that guy “Sorry man” … I’m gonna need a minute.)

Friday Bolts – 5.24.13

BoltsLogoNew11Nike released this statement: “Nike will donate footwear and apparel valued at approximately $1 million to assist those communities most in need via Good360, a nonprofit organization that will distribute the product to prequalified charities. In partnership with Kevin Durant, we will also donate all profits from the sale of his signature shoe, the KD V Elite, sold on nike.com (gonike.me/OKC ) between May 23 and June 15 in equal amounts to Kaboom, a national non-profit that rebuilds playgrounds, and the Moore Public School Foundation, an Oklahoma organization that supports the Moore Public School District.”

Darnell Mayberry: “For the first time in his career, Durant didn’t, taking a step back this season. The Thunder was eliminated in the second round, as a knee injury to Russell Westbrook derailed what potentially could have been a championship season. Most would agree that the 24-year-old Durant has plenty of time to cement his place among the all-time greats with a championship. But the fact remains that, regardless of the reasons, this is the third straight season that a championship-caliber Thunder team has fallen short. In no way is that an indictment on the franchise or the strides that have been made. But rather it’s an acknowledgment of just how difficult it is to reach the pinnacle of success, which raises the question of how repeated shortcomings might fuel Durant this summer.” Keep Reading…
