Kevin Love on Russell Westbrook

by Royce Young on December 17, 2012 at 12:28 pm 44 Comments

Kevin Love knows Russell Westbrook better than most. They’re good friends, and former college roommates. And I thought Love said something interesting here: Westbrook’s selfish. Because he needs to be. I’ve always said Westbrook wasn’t selfish and that ball-hog talk was all junk.

But I get what Love means. Westbrook’s not selfish in the sense he wants to call his own number for the glory, but selfish because his talents and abilities force him to be. It would like not letting Paul McCartney sing instead of John Lennon — at some point Westbrook needs a solo because it makes the whole better.

Monday Bolts – 12.17.12

Darnell Mayberry on how the Spurs and Thunder are the same but different: “Perhaps no dynasty in NBA history has been considered boring like San Antonio. The Spurs, for whatever reason, just haven’t moved the needle in America’s heart despite fielding some of the best and brightest players the league has ever seen. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, the Thunder is a league darling and seemingly America’s sweetheart. No matter how you judge it, be it jersey sales or ticket sales, television viewers or butts in the seats, the Thunder is one of the most popular teams today. And the admiration is only growing. It’s a surprising development coming from such a small market.”

From Elias: “Kevin Durant had a team high 31 points and Russell Westbrook dished out 13 assists to lead the Thunder to their 10th consecutive victory on Friday night. Durant has led the team in scoring and Westbrook has been the high assists man in each of Oklahoma City’s wins during the streak. Only one other team in NBA history has won ten consecutive games with one player leading them in scoring and another leading in assists (outright or tied) in each game. In 1994-95, the Jazz won 13 straight games with Karl Malone leading the team in points and John Stockton posting the most assists in every game during the streak.” Keep Reading…

Happy weekend. Thank you for your support of Daily Thunder. Hug someone.

The Thunder are a little over a fourth of the way done with the season and I’d say it’s been a pretty successful first quarter. Via Yude Productions, here’s a nice little video recap of it.

Thunder keep streaking with 113-103 win over the Kings

BOX SCORE

That’s a picture of Kevin Durant’s shoe tonight.

On a day when basketball feels so insignificant and the results seem to matter so little, there was still a game to play. And as someone that’s been dwelling on the horrific events in Connecticut all day, those couple hours at Chesapeake Energy Arena tonight felt pretty good.

The paralyzing horror of today took a backseat for a couple hours inside The Peake where there was no CNN, no breaking news updates, no press conferences or police statements. Just basketball. Russell Westbrook dunked. KD scored. There was Kiss Cam, there were kids dancing, there was Rumble, there was high-fiving and there was a good basketball game going on. The Thunder won their 10th straight. And they played pretty well doing it, handling the overmatched Kings 113-103. Keep Reading…

Offensive Rating: Thunder – 113.7 (1st), Kings– 101.2 (27th)
Defensive Rating: Thunder – 103.7 (11th), Kings – 107.0 (23rd)
Pace: Thunder – 91.9 (18th), Kings – 92.0 (13th)

View from the enemy: Cowbell Kingdom

Note: Today sucks, big time. And basketball seems so comically small and irrelevant right now. Keep that in mind while you’re griping about Perk or whatever tonight.

Considering how Wednesday’s game against the Hornets went, it’s obvious: This isn’t to be taken lightly. The Kings aren’t good, but they do have a little talent and with the Thunder’s last two slow starts, eventually that kind of thing is going to come back to bite them. Keep Reading…

Friday Bolts – 12.14.12

Darnell Mayberry with a great piece on OKC’s rotation: “The Thunder has had only minimal minutes to offer first- and second-year players since becoming a league heavyweight. But Brooks’ reluctance to award even those minutes to his younger players through the years, dating to D.J. White four seasons ago, continues to raise two popular questions: what does the Thunder have buried on its bench and why exactly aren’t those players playing outside of garbage time? To many, they have become a perplexing pair of questions for a fan base that’s been bombarded with analysts annually acclaiming the team’s young bloods. For the first time since taking over as head coach, Brooks on Thursday spoke candidly about his philosophy regarding his rotations, providing details and insight into the decisions he’s made since 2008.”

Berry Tramel on changing names: “The whole concept of name changes is relevant to the NBA, especially with the Hornets in town Wednesday. The name that forever will be remembered in Oklahoma City is about to go bye-bye. Or at least East. The Hornets plan to change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans. It’s sound theory. If you can’t change your backcourt, change your name and get everyone’s mind off the backcourt. If Chris Paul and David West still were sending New Orleans into the second round of the NBA playoffs, like they did in 2008, then nobody would even think to change the name. But CP3 and West are long gone, and so soon will be the Hornet name birthed by George Shinn back in Charlotte.” Keep Reading…

Practice Report: Rotation Reggie?

When Reggie Jackson popped up off the Thunder bench and jogged over to the scorers table with a couple minutes left in the third quarter, I was confused.

Did Russell Westbrook get dinged up or something? Westbrook just picked up a foul, how many is that on him? Just three? So why is Jackson coming in?

It took me a second, but it became clear: Scott Brooks was just putting Jackson in the game. Not for any reason, other than to try and jumpstart the team.

Obviously it worked — maybe coincidentally — but it worked nonetheless. The Thunder went on a 15-2 run, took control of the game and escaped blowing a really bad game to the lowly Hornets at home. Keep Reading…
