Practice Report: Chippy

The Thunder have only been back in camp for a few days and it’s already obvious that they’re ready to throw the ball up for real as Scott Brooks said Friday after practice that things got a bit “chippy” in the team’s scrimmage.

“I just like the spirit of our guys,” Brooks said. “They’ve always been a group that works, a group that challenges each other. It gets chippy. There’s no question today was probably our most chippy, if that’s even the way to say it. We scrimmaged a lot so guys really got after it.”

Brooks said today’s practice was almost entirely scrimmaging, which led to some very intense work on the floor. Of note in the chippyness department? Keep Reading…

DT Mailbag: Kickstarting a dynasty?

This is a not-so-serious question, but it’s been burning inside me for a solid week or so. A couple friends and I were sitting around the table at for our weekly guys’ night, and as we drank craft beer and played a solid round of Catan, we discussed the slight possibility of civic project of raising money to cover the luxury tax issues that will most likely come in place for James Harden.

Would it even be legal to start a Kickstarter page with the sole purpose of covering the Thunder’s cost of luxury tax if we did sign Harden? I seriously think that OKC would muster up the cash to make four/five more years of watching a Thunder dynasty happen. I know that, for one, I would easily cough up twenty to fifty dollars just to watch Harden play for four years, and I have a feeling that many people in OKC would feel similarly. Also thinking about MAPS 6 as an option. — Wil N.

Big fan of when someone takes an idea of mine and emails it to me.

But seriously though, it’s actually a pretty interesting thought. Someone smarter than I can probably say officially, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be legal to do something like that. Kickstarter is technically for creative projects, but some consider the NBA art, so let’s stretch the rules a little. Keep Reading…

Friday Bolts – 10.5.12

Darnell Mayberry: “Westbrook, a sneaker free agent, said that he’s not with Nike or adidas. He was wearing Jordan’s today, a different pair than the Thunder colorway Jordan’s he wore to media day Monday. Westbrook could be just testing out the J’s, or it could be a tell-all sign of where he’s headed. After all, Dwyane Wade did recently confirm that he’s leaving the Jordan Brand. Westbrook said he expects to have a new shoe deal done before the start of the regular season.”

Former Thunder scout and current Blazers assistant David Vanterpool to Blazersedge: “Russell is fiery because of his competitive spirit on the court. He’s a great guy. They’re both great, great people. Damian has a warm personality and so does Russell, especially when he’s comfortable around people that he knows. For Damian to look up to Russell means a lot, simply because Russell had to come from a situation where in college he didn’t always start at point guard, he wasn’t really recruited out of high school, he wasn’t predicted to play point guard in the NBA at all.” Keep Reading…

Manu Ginobili on the new flopping rules: “It’s going to be very hard to determine when it’s a flop and when it’s not,” Ginobili said. “There’s a lot of contact, a lot of heavy players, and it can be tricky. I don’t think (fining players) is going to happen much … “It’s going to be very hard to determine,” he said. “Many times, it’s an exaggeration of contact. That’s not a flop. A flop is when there is not contact and not a foul. So we’ll see how they explain it and how it works.”

Darnell Mayberry: “A few observations from those drills: Durant’s post D against Ibaka looked solid. On several occasions, Durant stripped the ball from Ibaka after Ibaka made a post move but just before he went up for the shot. Or KD contested Ibaka’s shot so well that he tipped it. Good sign. Maynor’s shot mechanics still has that wind up before his release. But it was going in, so who cares? PJIII looked comfortable attacking, but as a rookie he still has minor details to learn, as evidenced by coach’s pulling him aside and trying to show him angles and such.” Keep Reading…

Wednesday Bolts – 10.3.12

HoopSpeak on the best pindown players: “Durant is a tough cover in any situation, but it’s coming off screens where he is a real handful. Because the super-skilled, 6’11” superstar has such a sweet stroke, it’s easy to forget that his jumper isn’t the only thing defenses have to worry about. Durant also has the jaw-dropping ability to catch coming off a screen from nearly anywhere inside the the 3-point line and finish at the rim with one or no dribbles. That incredible combination of length, coordination and athleticism leaves defenders scratching their heads.”

Sean Deveney of Sporting News comparing KD to George Gervin: “That mindset has shown itself on the court. Last year was Durant’s fifth in the NBA, and though he won another scoring title, what was most impressive about him was that he found other ways to contribute. He averaged 8.0 rebounds, a career high and the most of any small forward. He averaged a career-best 3.5 assists, ranking fourth for his position. He continues to get better as a defender, learning to use his long arms and quickness to his benefit. That is ultimately what could separate Durant from Gervin. While Gervin is a 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer, his teams rarely got anywhere in the postseason. The Spurs reached the conference finals three times with Gervin, but never got any further.” Keep Reading…

The Western Conference changed quite a bit over the summer. What appeared to an easy transition of the Thunder taking complete control over the West has been put on hold as teams revamped their rosters and took measures to reestablish themselves.

So what’s the landscape look like this season? Is another division title a given? Is the West better than it was? And what’s the journey back to the Finals going to be like? Keep Reading…

Mark Cuban on if the NBA has missed Seattle: “I don’t think it’s a fair assessment. Obviously Oklahoma City’s done a great job, and so when I say I’m pro-Seattle, it doesn’t mean I’m anti-Oklahoma City. In reality, among our small-market teams they’ve probably done the best. And so as much as people don’t really like Clay, Clay has done a good job down there. … Based on where we are, there are teams that would pop into consideration.”

BrewHoop breaks down KD vs. LRMAM: “By crowding Durant and staying physical with him — while still having the quickness and length to effectively challenge shots and shut down driving lanes — LRMAM forces KD into tough situations on the perimeter. The choices for Durant are often whittled down to: (1) give the ball up, (2) take a contested jumper or (3) try to force a drive into the paint. The degree of difficulty imposed by Luc leads to more turnovers and less free throw attempts for Durant.” Keep Reading…
