Thursday Bolts – 7.19.12

by Royce Young on July 19, 2012 at 9:46 am 81 Comments

Tom Ziller of SB Nation on the Lakers: “But a team with that profile wouldn’t be anything like an overwhelming title favorite. A team with that profile probably wouldn’t rate higher than the team that smoked them in the playoffs this spring, the Thunder. Or higher than the team that smoked the Thunder, those pesky Miami Heat. Unless something derails those two clubs, you can keep the dynasty talk in your back pocket. The Lakers would be a legit title contender so long as Nash (38 years old) and Kobe (closing in on 34) were highly productive, but they wouldn’t likely be a championship favorite in any season, let alone multiple seasons. Landing Nash and Howard would be great, but wouldn’t renew the Lakers dynasty.”

Hasheem Thabeet on what the Thunder coaching staff has told him: “They just told me that I have to be ready to work. That’s my focus right now, just come in and be able to work each day and get better every day.” Keep Reading…

Oklahoma City’s Offseason Grade: On a curve

As other teams ran the free agency rat race — overpaying for talent, making deals, signing veterans looking to chase a championship — the Thunder had a very Thunder-like offseason.

Uneventful.

All it amounted to was trading Nazr Mohammed, Derek Fisher and Royal Ivey for Perry Jones III, Hasheem Thabeet and Hollis Thompson. An upgrade? Hard to know with the unknowns of two rookies and a bust, but it’s probably at least a push.

What the Thunder do lose though is three very solid veteran voices. Obviously Scott Brooks and Sam Presit feel that between the experiences of the last couples seasons along with a few older guys like Nick Collison and Kendrick Perkins that the Thunder have plenty of it. Because no more Fisher, no more Mohammed, no more Ivey. That’s 38 seasons of NBA experience replaced with three, and those are all from Thabeet. Keep Reading…

Wednesday Bolts – 7.18.12

Shayne Lee for CNN.com on the Dream Team vs. 2012: “The general consensus appears to side with Jordan and Barkley. In informal online polls, an overwhelming majority of the public favored the Dream Team over our current Olympic Team in a hypothetical matchup. Judging by the polls, pundits and prognostications on the issue, few seem to be taking Kobe’s sacrilege seriously. But I do. In fact, I believe Kobe Bryant’s team would not only win, but also win comfortably. What makes this social scientist so sure?”

Mike Kurylo of Knickerblogger: “Logically there is no reason to be a Knick fan, and yet you, we, persist. By acknowledging we are Knick fans we publicly support the moves of the organization. By watching MSG or buying Knicks gear we give our monetary support to the team. And by staying Knick fans we share the same stubborn traits that continues to make this team doomed to failure. So as Knick fans we not only agree with James L. Dolan, but in some deeper way, we become him.” Keep Reading…

Tuesday Bolts – 7.17.12

Perry Jones III in a Q&A: “It’s a good fit, especially when they called me and told me that they wanted me to just play basketball like I’ve been playing. They know I’m a very unselfish guy, and that’s what they want the most from me is to be very unselfish. The team already has everything, and I just want to be able to contribute. I don’t care if it’s 15 seconds on the floor or 10 seconds on the floor, I just want to be able to help somehow.”

Nate Silver of the New York Times on the Lin situation: “But if Lin plays even 80 percent as well as he did in February, the Knicks could have a 55- or even 60-win roster. Winning a championship would still be a feat, with dominant teams like the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder in the league. But the Knicks would be on track to be a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. They would also host many home playoff games and would have a puncher’s chance of bringing home their first N.B.A. title since 1973. The Nets might not be an afterthought like they were in New Jersey, but the Knicks would still be the toast of the town.” Keep Reading…

Video: KD hammers on Brazil with two hands

by Royce Young on July 16, 2012 at 9:17 pm 102 Comments

Team USA wasn’t nearly as dominant in their second tune-up as they were in their first, but that’s a credit to a step up in competition as the Dominican Republic is no Brazil.

Kevin Durant didn’t do much lighting up finishing with 11 points, but these two were very good as the U.S. fought off a pesky Brazilian side 80-69.

Russell Westbrook finished with just two, James Harden zero. Team USA is now off to England to continue training in prep for the Olympics which start in late July.

Brazil vs. USA: Open thread

by Royce Young on July 16, 2012 at 6:13 pm 554 Comments

Team USA has its final tune-up on American soil before heading off to London to continue training there in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

The U.S. takes on Brazil in Washington DC and while it’s just an exhibition game, it should be a pretty good test for the Americans. The Brazilians always play Team USA well and have some interior size and strength, which is said to be Team USA’s weakness.

In the first exhibition game Kevin Durant came off the bench, which was odd, but I’d expect more of the same for at least a little while. KD should probably be starting ahead of Melo, but Coach K is just kind of sticking with his 2008 experience.

Tip at 7 p.m. CT. Go Red (KD), White (Russ) and Blue (James).

For the Thunder, a chance to bounce back in London

The sting of losing in The Finals is still pretty fresh but there are the Thunder’s three main players, all suited up again and trying to win a different kind of championship all over again. And it’s a good thing too. The Olympics roll around at a good time for the Thunder as a way to hopefully move past a disappointing end to the 2011-12 season. Reader Brandon emailed in his take on it.

Special to Daily Thunder

By now, you’ve probably come out of your Thunder-induced coma to brave the harsh reality of life after the 2012 postseason. The absence of Charles Barkley’s voice is oddly depressing. Your brain needs time to assume its default state of Oblivious to Skip Bayless. Mainly, it’s hard to understand how things went so wrong after starting off so right. To even try would require you to relive it all in your mind, and right now it just seems too soon. Keep Reading…

John Schuhmann of NBA.com on Team USA: “You get the feeling that Durant, who scored 24 points against the Dominican Republic on Thursday, is going to be this team’s leading scorer, even though he’s got more talent around him than he did in 2010. But most of his shots are coming off feeds from his teammates. He doesn’t need to control the ball much, and can be that weak-side shooter that makes defenses pay for loading up on James or the point guards.”

Michael Lee of the Washington Post on Team USA: “Krzyzewski was honest and direct with Durant, who was the breakout star and leader of the gold medal-winning world championship squad in Turkey two years ago. After the United States thrashed the Dominican Republic by 54 points, with Durant scoring a game-high 24, the District native joked with his Oklahoma City and U.S. teammate James Harden, the NBA sixth man of the year last season, that he was going to ask Thunder Coach Scott Brooks to come off the bench next season in the NBA.” Keep Reading…
