Derek Fisher is in OKC, expected to finalize deal with the Thunder
Former Laker guard and five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher is in Oklahoma City and is expected to finalize a deal with the Thunder, a source tells DailyThunder.com.
Fisher being in OKC was first reported by NBA.com. He can’t officially sign with the Thunder until the team releases a player to free a spot and Fisher clears waivers at 6 p.m. ET. It’s unknown, but doubtful he’d be in uniform tonight against the Clippers.
The Thunder are looking for another veteran to add to the roster for a playoff run, as well as depth at point guard after losing Eric Maynor for the season to a knee injury. Rookie Reggie Jackson has been getting the bulk of the backup minutes, but for understandable reasons, would like a bit more stability at that slot heading to the postseason. And it doesn’t get much more stable than Fisher.
Kevin Durant gave his full endorsement of signing Fisher in Utah Tuesday saying he’s a “Thunder guy.” Fisher, 37, is obviously looking to hitch his wagon to a contending team to make another run at a ring.
Fisher started 43 games for the Lakers and is averaging 5.9 points and 3.3 assists per game this season.
