Kevin Durant has foot procedure; re-evaluated in a week
Don’t panic.
Kevin Durant underwent a procedure Sunday on his surgically repaired right foot to help alleviate soreness and discomfort, the team announced.
He will be re-evaluated in a week.
Durant has been battling through pain the last few weeks, but with the situation not improving, the decision was made to look into alternatives to help.
The important part: Durant’s fracture has healed “perfectly” according to Sam Presti, and this issue with soreness is in an unrelated area of his foot. It’s basically just part of the recovery process. To be exact, the screw Durant had inserted is rubbing against another (unrelated) bone, causing soreness. So he had a new screw put in that has a different head on it which is expected to help address some of that pain.
Here’s Presti’s statement on it:
“As we have conveyed, Kevin has experienced increased soreness in his right foot recently and as a result we initiated a process to determine the best way to manage it moving forward. In order to alleviate that discomfort, it was determined after consultation with Dr. Robert Anderson, and after receiving a second opinion from Dr. Martin O’Malley, that because the fracture itself has continued to heal as anticipated, there was an opportunity to address irritation from the screw, and make an adjustment to a different piece of hardware within the foot to relieve the symptoms of his soreness.
“The fracture itself is healing excellently by all accounts and we continue to feel good about the prognosis moving forward, but in the short term as he continued to have this discomfort, we wanted to determine the best way to alleviate it while still promoting the continued healing of the initial injury.
“He is expected to be re-evaluated within a week to determine when he will return this regular season.”
Naturally, the Thunder have four games this week, including big ones against the Suns and Blazers because why wouldn’t they?
