Kevin Durant leads Team USA to a gold medal rematch with Spain
The run was coming. It was obvious. And there was nothing Argentina could do to stop it.
Wouldn’t you know it too, it came in the third quarter, again keyed by Kevin Durant. How about that?
KD scored 12 of his game-high 19 in the third, hitting four 3-pointers as the U.S. blew open the game late in the third en route to a 109-83 stomping of Argentina advancing to a gold medal rematch against Spain.
It was basically just catch-and-shoot fun for Durant who found his spots and knocked down open looks from outside. He hit 4-of-6 from deep in the third, and 5-of-10 overall from outside. And then he passed the baton to Carmelo Anthony in the 4X400 3-point relay as Melo slammed the door.
But the potential story of the game, at least in terms of the Thunder inclined, was Russell Westbrook leaving the game with an apparent leg injury. It happened late in the fourth quarter as Westbrook chased an Argentine player around a screen and appeared to injure his left ankle. It shouldn’t be anything that serious as Westbrook limp-ran his way to the locker room, but it might keep him out of the gold medal game.
(UPDATE: Westbrook has been diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain, according to USA Basketball.)
Westbrook finished with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.
James Harden entered the game late in his Cole Aldrich role and knocked down an obligatory 3, finishing with three points.
Next up for Team USA is the gold medal final against Spain Sunday morning.
