Russell Westbrook proposed for somebody on Twitter

Romance isn’t dead. It’s just in 140 characters or less now.

Here’s the story: Russell Westbrook tweeted this:

And a few minutes later, Rachel Haycraft tweeted back “I said yes!” with the picture above, to which Westbrook re-tweeted with, “She said yes!”

So what is this all about? Did someone really propose to his girlfriend using Russell Westbrook and Twitter?

Charlie Bright did.

What? How? Why?

First, a little background: Charlie met Rachel at an OU football game and their first date was at a Thunder game. Two major parts of their life that Charlie wanted to intersect.

“For me, I wanted to combine those two events,” he told me by phone.

Both Thunder season ticket holders, Charlie decided he’d take Rachel to campus somewhere at OU ask her the most important question of his life. But with another idea attached to it.

“I thought a really cool way to combine the two would be for Russell, or somebody on the team to ask her on Twitter or something to propose,” Charlie said. “So I messaged him on Facebook earlier in the week and just made in bold print the words “marriage proposal” because I’m sure he gets a lot of messages I wanted it to jump out.

“The first words of the message were something like ‘I know this is a long shot and probably won’t work, but if you’re interested…’ Honestly I didn’t think it was going to work,” he said.

A few days went by and Charlie didn’t hear back from Russ. He was going to start putting together Plan B, but then a message showed up in his inbox.

“I think his reply was literally like five words like ‘I’m down, what’s the plan?’ Charlie said.

They exchanged some messages about what the tweet should say, they compared a few notes and they figured out a time to send it out when Charlie would have Rachel positioned (which ended up being under the clocktower near the north side of OU’s stadium).

“I asked her to look at her Twitter and she looked at it and saw it and looked like she was about to cry, so I got down on one knee and asked her if she’d marry me,” he said. “And she said yes.”

So, from Rachel’s perspective, she pulls out her phone, looks at it and is getting proposed to by Russell Westbrook. What?

“I was really confused because I’m a Twitterholic anyway and always on Twitter but he randomly told me to check my Twitter and I was like ‘Okkkaayy,'” she said. “And then I saw that and about had a heart attack because I love the Thunder and I love Russell and so I’m like ‘Oh my gosh! What!?!’ It’s the combination of Russell is tweeting me and Charlie asking me to marry him at the same time. So I was completely shocked.”

Why Russ, though? Instead of, you know, KD?

“He’s totally my favorite,” Rachel said. “I love Russell. I think Russell kind of gets a bad rap sometimes but I love him to death and think he’s great.”

So, Russ is obviously going to be best man then, right?

“I’ll send him an invitation to the wedding,” Charlie said. “I have no expectations of him showing up.”

Well… why not?
